미국의 입장에서 볼 때, 한국은 1950년대 원조 대상국이었으나 최근에는 대등한 수준의 경쟁국으로 발전했다. 2017년 이후 트럼프 행정부는 자국우선주의에 기반한 정책 기조를 유지하고 있으며, 한국에 대해서도 FTA 재협상을 요구하는 등 협력보다는 경쟁을 중시하는 모습이다. 하지만 한미 양국 모두 자유로운 교역이 주는 경제적 가치를 크게 훼손할 유인이 없기 때문에, 트럼프 행정부의 조치는 앞으로 실질적 경제적 손익변화보다는 정치적 상징성에 중점을 둘 가능성이 높다. 이에 따라 한미 경제협력체제도 현재 수준을 대체로 유지할 전망인데, 그 과정에서 서로 경제적 이익을 지키면서 정치적 이해관계를 조율하려는 외교적 노력을 강화할 필요가 있다. From the viewpoint of the US government, Korea was one of the least developed countries in the 1950s and could not survive without aid from the US. After 60 years of fast economic growth, Korea is now an advanced country that can compete equally with the United States in many industries. Korea’s dependence on bilateral trade with the US has been dramatically reduced, although the overall importance of that trade for Korea’s economy is still large. At the same time, the Trump administration is pushing a “my country first” policy, as are many other countries. These factors suggest that the Korea-US economic relationship might be different in the 21st century. However, economic gains from free trade and cooperation between the two countries are simply too big to ignore, which means that the Trump government’s policy will focus more on politically symbolic gestures rather than on real economic benefits or costs. Therefore, the Korea-US economic relationship will remain more or less the same. Still, both governments must maintain efforts to sustain the economic benefits of bilateral trade, while dealing with small political misalignments with wise diplomacy.
