Effect of hydraulic distribution on the stability of a plane slide rock slope under the nonlinear Barton-Bandis failure criterion

        Zhao, Lian-Heng,Cao, Jingyuan,Zhang, Yingbin,Luo, Qiang Techno-Press 2015 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.8 No.3

In this paper, stabilities of a plane slide rock slope under different hydraulic distributions were studied based on the nonlinear Barton-Bandis (B-B) failure criterion. The influence of various parameters on the stability of rock slopes was analyzed. Parametric analysis indicated that studying the factor of safety (FS) of planar slide rock slopes using the B-B failure criterion is both simple and effective and that the effects of the basic friction angle of the joint (${\varphi}_b$), the joint roughness coefficient (JRC), and the joint compressive strength (JCS) on the FS of a planar slide rock slope are significant. Qualitatively, the influence of the JCS on the FS of a slope is small, whereas the influences of the ${\varphi}_b$ and the JRC are significant. The FS of the rock slope decreases as the water in a tension crack becomes deeper. This trend is more significant when the flow outlet is blocked, a situation that is particularly prevalent in regions with permafrost or seasonal frozen soil. Finally, the work is extended to study the reliability of the slope against plane failure according to the uncertainty from physical and mechanics parameters.

Effect of surface bolt on the collapse mechanism of a shallow rectangular cavity

        Huang, Fu,Zhao, Lian-heng,Zhang, Sheng Techno-Press 2017 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.13 No.3

Based on the collapse characteristics of a shallow rectangular cavity, a three-dimensional failure mechanism which can be used to study the collapsing region of the rock mass above a shallow cavity roof is constructed. Considering the effects of surcharge pressure and surface bolt on the collapsing block, the external rate of works produced by surcharge pressure and surface bolt are included in the energy dissipation calculation. Using variational approach, an analytic expression of surface equation for the collapsing block, which can be used to study the collapsing region of the rock mass above a shallow cavity roof, is derived in the framework of upper bound theorem. Based on the analytic expression of surface equation, the shape of the collapsing block for shallow cavity is drawn. Moreover, the changing law of the collapsing region for different parameters indicates that the collapsing region of rock mass decreases with the increase of the density of surface bolt. This conclusion can provide reference for practicing geotechnical engineers to achieve an optimal design of supporting structure for a shallow cavity.

Theoretical Solutions for a Circular Opening in an Elastic–brittle–plastic Rock Mass Incorporating the Out-of-plane Stress and Seepage Force

        Zou Jin-feng,Li Shuai-shuai,Xu Yuan,Dan Han-cheng,Zhao Lian-heng 대한토목학회 2016 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.20 No.2

Seepage force is simplified as seepage volumetric force in the stress field along the radial direction. Out-of-plane stress and seepage force are incorporated, and the theoretical solutions for stress, displacement, and plastic radius of a circular opening for the elastic-brittle-plastic and elastic-plastic rock mass are proposed based on the Mohr–Coulomb (MC) and generalized Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criteria. The presented solution and Wang’s solution (2012) are compared, and the corrected version of the proposed method is validated. Numerical examples of the proposed method based on the MC and generalized HB failure criteria reveal that the distributions of stress and displacement in the surrounding rock of the tunnel are significantly influenced by seepage force and out-ofplane stress. Displacement and plastic radius when seepage force and out-of-plane stress are considered are larger than those when the seepage force is not considered; the regulations of stress, however, run opposite. The results of displacement and plastic radius based on the generalized HB failure criterion are larger than those based on the MC failure criterion.
