In this paper, the mechanism and basic driving function of a wheeled inverted pendulum-type personal mobility with a pedal (Wi-PMP) are described. The mobility consists of a wheeled inverted pendulum-type mobile platform and a leg rowing mechanism, and thus it can be driven by a rider’s leg rowing motion. Moreover, to retain the merits of pivot turning of a parallel two-wheeled mobility, a differential gear box and a one-way clutch are installed between the pedal and the wheel shafts. It is designed such that a rider can ground his feet while sitting on the saddle. In addition, the Wi-PMP is compact and light-weight, and thus it can be driven and parked in a narrow space. Through experiments using three types of driving mode(motor driving, pedal driving, and assist driving), it was confirmed that mobility can realize all driving modes and pivot turning while keeping the feet of the rider on the pedals.
Pleiotrophin exhibits a trophic effect on survival of dopaminergic neurons in vitro

To understand what kind of trophic factors are up-regulated in dopamine(DA)-depleted striatum, we first analysed the up-regulation of mRNAs using a DNA microarray in DA-depleted striatum where DAergic inputs were denervated by 6-OHDA. We then investigated whether or not such trophic factors had an effect on cultured dopaminergic neurons. The microarray analysis revealed that pleiotrophin (PTN), glial-derived neurotopic factor(GDNF) and others were up-regulated in DA-depleted striatum. As PTN has been reported to have a wide range of trophic effects on neurons, we focused on the functional role of PTN in the present study. The increase in PTN mRNA was confirmed by Northern blotting at 1-3 weeks after the lesion, reaching a peak at 1 week. In embryonic day 15 mesencephalic neuron culture, PTN increased the number of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive neurons in a dose-dependent manner (125.2±2.0% of the control at 50ng/mL), while a family protein, midkine(10ng/mL) did not show any trophic effect (99.3±0.7%). In addition, the PTN effect on DAergic neurons was additive to the GDNF effect. As PTN did not increase the number of microtubule-associated protein-2(MAP 2)-positive neurons or promote the proliferation of dopaminergic progenitors in a bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU) labelling study, the effect appeared to enhance the specific survival of dopaminergic neurons. Expression of PTN receptors (syndecan-3, PTP-ζ) was detected on the cultured mesencephalic neurons, and also up-regulated in DA-depleted striatum. The data indicate that PTN is up-regulated in DA-depleted striatum and exhibits a trophic effect specifically on the survival of cultured dopaminergic neurons.
Structural Design of High-Rise Building in Toranomon-Azabudai Project (A Block)

This paper explains about structural planning and structural design of the high-rise building in Toranomon-Azabudai Project (A Block) which is now under construction. The building is about 330 meters high, has 4.2 aspect ratio, and the outline of the building has shallow curve. We adopted seismic response control structure. The building is a steel rigid frame structure with braces, and it has enough stiffness to obtain its primary natural period to be less than about seven seconds, in consideration of wind response, seismic response and inhabitability for the wind shaking. In terms of business continuity plan, the building has a high seismic performance; value of story drift angle shall be 1/150 or less and members of the building remain almost undamaged while or after a large earthquake. Active mass dumper shall be installed at the top of the building to improve inhabitability while strong wind is blowing.
