        Significance of Preoperative Nerve Reconstruction Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging Tractography for Facial Nerve Protection in Vestibular Schwannoma

        Objective : The facial nerve trace on the ipsilateral side of the vestibular schwannoma was reconstructed by diffusion tensor imaging tractography to identify the adjacent relationship between the facial nerve and the tumor, and to improve the level of intraoperative facial nerve protection. Methods : The clinical data of 30 cases of unilateral vestibular schwannoma who underwent tumor resection via retrosigmoid approach were collected between January 2019 and December 2020. All cases underwent magnetic resonance imaging examination before operation. Diffusion tensor imaging and anatomical images were used to reconstruct the facial nerve track of the affected side, so as to predict the course of the nerve and its adjacent relationship with the tumor, to compare the actual trace of the facial nerve during operation, verify the degree of coincidence, and evaluate the nerve function (House-Brackmann grade) after surgery. Results : The facial nerve of 27 out of 30 cases could be displayed by diffusion tensor imaging tractography, and the tracking rate was 90% (27/30). The intraoperative locations of facial nerve shown in 25 cases were consistent with the preoperative reconstruction results. The coincidence rate was 92.6% (25/27). The facial nerves were located on the anterior middle part of the tumor in 14 cases, anterior upper part in eight cases, anterior lower part in seven cases, and superior polar in one case. Intraoperative facial nerve anatomy was preserved in 30 cases. Among the 30 patients, total resection was performed in 28 cases and subtotal resection in two cases. The facial nerve function was evaluated 2 weeks after operation, and the results showed grade I in 12 cases, grade II in 16 cases and grade III in two cases. Conclusion : Preoperative diffusion tensor imaging tractography can clearly show the trajectory and adjacent position of the facial nerve on the side of vestibular schwannoma, which is beneficial to accurately identify and effectively protect the facial nerve during the operation, and is worthy of clinical application and promotion.

        Compressive Behavior of T-shaped Concrete Filled Steel Tubular Columns

        Special-shaped column structures improve residential architectural space, compared with traditional frame structures. However, in respect to applicable building height and seismic fortification intensity, traditional special-shaped reinforced concrete (RC) columns have strict limitations in seismic behavior, which hampers further generalization and application of special-shaped columns. Due to increase in constraint effect for concrete, special-shaped concrete-filled steel tube (CFST)columns are expected to behave advantages on the strength, ductility and seismic behavior over special-shaped RC columns. However, special attention should be paid to prevent the steel plates’ premature local buckling and the separation between steel tube and concrete at inner corners. The battlement-shaped bar stiffeners and tensile bar stiffeners, welded on tube surfaces, were first put forward in this paper. Experimental study of 9 stubs in three groups subjected to axial loads was conducted, and the specimens consist of 3 square stubs (including 1 non-stiffened and 2 stiffened CFST specimens) and 6 T-shaped stubs (including 1 RC specimen, 2 non-stiffened and 3 stiffened CFST specimens). Failure modes and static properties of the specimens were investigated. Experimental results reveal that: Due to the constraint effect provided by T-shaped tubes, the CFST specimens behave advantages on the RC specimen in the ascending stiffness, peak resistance and ductility (except for the battlementshaped bar stiffened CFSTs). For square and T-shaped stiffened CFST specimens, the stiffeners improve their ductility,especially the tensile bar which gives the best performance in ductility and improves the peak resistance substantially. The stiffeners postpone the buckling of tubes, and even upgrade the classification of composite sections, without thickening the tubes.

      • Synchronous immobilization and conversion of polysulfides on a VO<sub>2</sub>-VN binary host targeting high sulfur load Li-S batteries

        <P>Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are deemed as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems. However, their practical application is hindered by existing drawbacks such as poor cycling life and low Coulombic efficiency due to the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). We herein present an <I>in situ</I> constructed VO2-VN binary host which combines the merits of ultrafast anchoring (VO2) with electronic conducting (VN) to accomplish smooth immobilization-diffusion-conversion of LiPSs. Such synchronous advantages have effectively alleviated the polysulfide shuttling, promoted the redox kinetics, and hence improved the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries. As a result, the sulfur cathode based on the VO2-VN/graphene host exhibited an impressive rate capability with ∼1105 and 935 mA h g<SUP>−1</SUP> at 1C and 2C, respectively, and maintained long-term cyclability with a low capacity decay of 0.06% per cycle within 800 cycles at 2C. More remarkably, favorable cyclic stability can be attained with a high sulfur loading (13.2 mg cm<SUP>−2</SUP>). Even at an elevated temperature (50 °C), the cathodes still delivered superior rate capacity. Our work emphasizes the importance of immobilization-diffusion-conversion of LiPSs toward the rational design of high-load and long-life Li-S batteries.</P>
