        Design of U-shape Milled Groove Conformal Cooling Channels for Plastic Injection Mold

        Besides the solid free-form fabrication technology, milling operation is an alternative applicable method to make complex cooling channels conform to the surface of the mold cavity. This paper presents the U-shape milled groove conformal cooling channels and proposes the design optimization process in order to obtain an optimal cooling channels’configuration and target mold temperature. The relation between the cycle averaged thermal behavior of the mold cavity and the two-dimensional configuration of cooling channels was first investigated thoroughly by an analytical method. Design of experiment and 2D simulation were done to obtain the mold wall temperature and to check the feasibility of the analytical method. The optimization process of the free-form conformal cooling channels is based on the combination of both analytical method and 3D CAE simulation. The analytical step relies on explicit mathematic formulas, so it can approach the neighboring optimal solution quickly. Subsequently, the three-dimensional heat transfer simulation is applied to fine-tune the optimization results. A case study for a plastic car fender was investigated to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. The results show that conformal cooling channel gives a uniform cooling, reducing the cooling time and increasing the molded part’s quality with less effort of plastic designers and high computational efficiency.

      • Development of plastic fender for weight-reduced automobiles

        Lightweight design with thermoplastics is a potential approach in order to reduce the weight and fuel consumption. This paper reviews the role of plastics and lightweight design as well as the state of the art and develops the design process for changing steel fender to plastic ones. The plastic car fenders made by injection molding method that offer some advantages such as light weight, low cost, recycle-ability, manufacturability and design flexibility can replace the traditional on-line painted steel car fender. In this study, design concepts, material section, and optimization strategy in terms of design for strength, and design for manufacturability were proposed. CAE tools were used to calculate the strength and predict the thermal expansion of the fender. The simulation results show that large thermal expansion is the disadvantage of the thermal plastic fenders, so special fastening devices were adopted. The weight of plastic car fender can be reduced two times compared to the steel fender. A real mold for Sonata 2008 fender was made and the testing process was carried out to check the manufacturability and optimization results.

        Correlation and Path Analysis of Association among Yield, Micronutrients, and Protein Content in Rice Accessions Grown Under Aerobic Condition from Karnataka, India

        Genetic variability and correlation analysis are fundamental references for the innovative development of breeding programs to improve varieties and desirable traits. In the present study, the correlation and path analysis was conducted to understand the association among yield, micronutrients (iron and zinc), and protein content under aerobic conditions in local rice landraces from various agro ecological regions of Karnataka, India. The grain yield per plant showed a significant positive correlation with plant height, the tiller number, spikelet fertility, flag leaf length, and test weight. The zinc content was negatively correlated with grain yield per plant. The phenotypic path-coefficient analysis revealed that the total number of tillers, grain length, test weight, and harvest index exhibited a positive direct effect on grain yield per plant, while Grain protein content showed a low direct effect on this trait. This study also indicated that harvest index, flag leaf length, spikelet fertility, and test weight could be considered to make for a higher yield.

        E-commerce Adoption in Distribution: An Empirical Study on Household Businesses in Food and Beverage Industry

        Purpose: This study aims to identify factors affecting the adoption of e-commerce by household businesses in Vietnam s food and beverage industry. Research design, data and methodology: The integrated TAM and TOE frameworks and ten hypotheses were developed to test the relationship between relevant factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect valid data from 992 respondents who run F&B household businesses in Vietnam. Results: The empirical research results confirm all proposed hypotheses that e-commerce adoption is affected by the perceived usefulness, the perceived ease of use, vendor support partners, social expectancy, competitive pressure, subjective norm, and household resources. Meanwhile, technical readiness, environment readiness, and organization readiness are intermediate variables that influence the implementation of e-commerce in food and beverage distribution. Conclusions: The findings suggest effective orientations to foster the food and beverage e-trading practice for household businesses in developing countries. Accordingly, to encourage private household businesses to adopt e-commerce, it is necessary to focus on improving business resources, technology readiness, environment readiness, and organization readiness through raising awareness of usefulness, benefits, perceived ease of use, and increased support of vendor partners. Future research can focus on improving the efficiency of e-commerce applications in F&B distribution for both household businesses and larger-scale enterprises.

        The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Brand Value and Financial Performance: Evidence from Bancassurance Service Providers in Vietnam

        The objective of this article is to assess the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) implementation on Corporate Brand Value (CBV) and Corporate Financial Performance (CFP). At the same time, the article examines the mediated role of CBV on the relationship between CSR implementation and CFP. In-depth interviews and observation techniques were used in this article on 4 experts to collect qualitative information. Quantitative analysis was based on primary data obtained from 454 employees working at enterprises providing Bancassurance services. The article uses various models of Cronbach's Alpha coefficient, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and Structural Equation Analysis (SEM) using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 20.0 software. In addition, a 5-point Likert scale is used to measure observed variables. Research results show that CBV plays an intermediate role in the relationship between CSR implementation and CFP. At the same time, the implementation of CSR toward communities, customers, and workers directly impacts CBV and CFP. The article draws a new conclusion; there is no relationship found between the implementation of CSR and CFP. The result proposes implications for the state and Bancassurance service providers to develop and implement CSR-related policies and activities to enhance their brand value and financial performance.

        Reduction of Heat Losses for the In-line Induction Heating System by Optimization of Thermal Insulation

        Improving the electrical energy efficiency of the manufacturing process is the imperative task to resolve the cost-saving pressure and environmental legislations. This paper focuses on a study on the thermal efficiency of the in-line induction heating systems that are using in the hot forging applications. Besides optimizing the process parameters that increase the electromagnetic and thermal efficiency, reducing the heat losses to the surrounding air is one of the practical ways to save the operating energy. The weakness of the current in-line induction heating systems were pointed out, and we proposed an insulating system to reduce the heat losses caused by convection and radiation. The analytical model of the heat transfer and the simulation model were built to calculate and verify the thermal efficiency of the insulating covers. The results show that using insulating covers at the open spaces between adjacent heaters of an in-line induction heating for automotive crankshaft forging can approximately reduce 9% of heat losses compared with the energy stored in the workpiece. The best values of the geometrical design parameters of the insulating cover were determined by solving the constrained optimization that considers some technological aspects of the proposed insulating system. This work is intended as a contribution to make the hot forging industry become greener and more efficient in terms of saving operating energy.

        Optimization of the In-line Induction Heating Process for Hot Forging in Terms of Saving Operating Energy

        Improving the efficiency of the manufacturing process is one of the ways to resolve the ecological issues, cost-saving pressure, and new environmental legislations. This paper presents the study on the in-line induction heating process prior to hot forging of an automotive crankshaft in order to find the potential solutions for improving the energy efficiency. The heating strategy that divides the induction heating line into groups for flexible control and saving operating energy was introduced. Optimization of the operating parameters of the induction heating system, including voltages and frequencies,was done using design of experiment in conjunction with numerical simulation, approximation, and genetic algorithm optimization techniques. In addition, thermal insulation was proposed to reduce the heat losses. The research results show that the energy can be saved through process parameter optimization approximately 6%. Furthermore, if the insulating covers at the open spaces between adjacent heaters are used, roughly 4% of additional amount of the energy consumption can be reduced.

        Optimization of Conformal Cooling Channels with Array of Baffles for Plastic Injection Mold

        Cooling system has an important role in the injection molding process in terms of not only productivity and quality, but also mold-making cost. In this paper, a conformal cooling channel with an array of baffles is proposed for obtaining uniform cooling over the entire free-form surface of molded parts. A new algorithm for calculating temperature distribution through molding thickness, mold surface temperature and cooling time was presented. The relation among cooling channels’ configuration, process parameters, mold material, molding thickness and temperature distribution in the mold for a given polymer is expressed by a system of approximate equations. This relation was established by the design of experiment and response surface methodology based on an adequate physical-mathematical model, finite difference method and numerical simulation. By applying this approximate mathematical relation, the optimization process for obtaining target mold temperature, uniform temperature distribution and minimizing the cooling time becomes more effective. Two case studies were carried out to test and validate the proposed method. The results show that present approach improves the cooling performance and facilitates the mold design process in comparison to the trial-and-error simulation-based method.

        It has recently attempted to optimize the product design process using software for the reduction of development terms and the retrenchment of expenditure. Particularly, it has made academic researches that substitute plastics for existing steel components in the automobile industry. In this study, we suggest the optimum method of design on the strength to replace the steel armrest frame. In addition, new plastic frame is not only reduce weight but also has the strength requirements. To maximize its weight reduction and structural strength, a polypropylene with 40% glass fiber filler was applied to the plastic frame in the armrest.
