Compressibility of Changi sand in K0 consolidation

        Wanatowski, D.,Chu, J.,Gan, C.L. Techno-Press 2009 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.1 No.3

The one-dimensional compressibility of sand is an important property for the estimation of settlement or deformation of sand deposits. The $K_0$ value of sand is also an important design parameter. Experimental results are presented in this paper to study the compressibility of sand in $K_0$ consolidation tests. The $K_0$ consolidation tests were carried out using a triaxial cell and a plane-strain apparatus. Specimens prepared using both the moist tamping and the water sedimentation methods were tested. The testing data demonstrate that the type of testing apparatus does not affect the $K_0$ measurement if proper boundary conditions are imposed in the tests. The data also show that the compressibility and the $K_0$ value of loose sand specimens prepared using the moist tamping method are very sensitive to the variation of void ratio. The $K_0$ values measured from these tests do not agree with the $K_0$ values calculated from Jaky's equation. The compressibility and $K_0$ values of sand obtained from tests on specimens prepared using different preparation methods are different which may reflect the influence of soil fabrics or structures on the one dimensional compression behavior of sand.

Geotechnical parameters from pressuremeter tests for MRT Blue Line extension in Bangkok

        Likitlersuang, Suched,Surarak, Chanaton,Wanatowski, Dariusz,Oh, Erwin,Balasubramaniam, Arumugam Techno-Press 2013 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.5 No.2

Construction of the extension project of the Bangkok MRT Blue Line underground railway was recently started in 2011. The construction of approximately 5 km long underground tunnel and 4 deep excavations of underground station are considered to be the most important geotechnical works. The pressuremeter was selected as a high-quality in situ testing of the soil to evaluate design parameters for the project. In addition, other field and laboratory tests such as vane shear and $CK_0U$ triaxial tests were included in the investigation programme. This paper aims to present the ground conditions encountered along the MRT Blue Line extension project as well as the site investigation and interpretation techniques with particular focus on the pressuremeter tests. The results are also compared with the pressuremeter investigation from the previous Bangkok MRT project.

Case-based reasoning approach to estimating the strength of sustainable concrete

구충완,Ruoyu Jin,Bo Li,차승현,Dariusz Wanatowski 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2017 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.20 No.6

Continuing from previous studies of sustainable concrete containing environmentally friendly materials and existing modeling approach to predicting concrete properties, this study developed an estimation methodology to predicting the strength of sustainable concrete using an advanced case-based reasoning approach. It was conducted in two steps: (i) establishment of a case database and (ii) development of an advanced case-based reasoning model. Through the experimental studies, a total of 144 observations for concrete compressive strength and tensile strength were established to develop the estimation model. As a result, the prediction accuracy of the A-CBR model (i.e., 95.214% for compressive strength and 92.448% for tensile strength) performed superior to other conventional methodologies (e.g., basic case-based reasoning and artificial neural network models). The developed methodology provides an alternative approach in predicting concrete properties and could be further extended to the future research area in durability of sustainable concrete.

Shear Strength and Compressibility Behaviour of Lime-treated Organic Clay

Nor Zurairahetty Mohd Yunus,Dariusz Wanatowski**,,Norhidayah Abdul Hassan,Aminaton Marto 대한토목학회 2016 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.20 No.5

Apart from strength characteristics, a review of studies on the compressibility of lime-treated soils is equally important that influenced the stability of soil structures. Due to the fact that no study has been carried out, an investigation on the effects of humic acid on strength and compressibility behaviour of lime-stabilised organic clay is presented in this paper. Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) and oedometer tests were carried out at different curing periods of 7, 28 and 90 days. Consolidation data was analysed in terms of changes in void ratio (e), volumetric strain (ε1), compression index (Cc), and coefficient of consolidation (cv) which defines a soil’s compressibility. The results showed a similar behaviour when compared to both tests. It can be conclude that the cementation bonding was associated with the fabric arrangement of soil structures.
