Summative program evaluation of a Student-Led Seminar Series in the subject of physiology: an outcome-based study

Vinu Vij,Pallavi Chitnis,Sadhana Mendhurwar 한국의학교육학회 2022 Korean journal of medical education Vol.34 No.1

Purpose: Active involvement of students in their learning process is a recommended andragogical approach to increase student engagement. Many new teaching-learning strategies based on active learning have been implemented, but their efficacies to achieve the proposed benefits of attaining knowledge, skills, and attitude have not been evaluated, especially in the field of medical education. We substituted passive learning in the conventional tutorial classes with an active-learning strategy of Student-Led Seminar Series (SLSS) in the subject of physiology over 4 months and performed program evaluation for the SLSS. Methods: Sixty-four first-year medical undergraduate students volunteered to participate, who were divided into groups to present seminars on the allocated topics under the guidance of a mentor. At the end of 4 months, program evaluation was done using Kirkpatrick’s model of evaluation—levels 1 and 2, which correspond to reaction and learning, respectively. Results: Statistically significant improvement was observed in students’ satisfaction, and the self-perceived increase was observed in knowledge, skills, and attitude. Conclusion: Program evaluation of SLSS not only established the significant impact of SLSS as an andragogical approach but also helped us in the improvisation of the program for the next cycle.

Influence of Diet on Methane and Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Cattle Manure

        Vinu M. Nampoothiri,Madhu Mohini,S. S. Thakur,Goutham Mondal 한국대기환경학회 2015 Asian Journal of Atmospheric Environment (AJAE) Vol.9 No.3

Livestock is one of the major contributors of greenhouse gases (GHGs). It accounts for 14.5% of the global GHGs emissions like methane (CH4) from enteric fermentation and manure, nitrous oxide (N2O) from manure and fertilizer. Since enteric emissions are a major contributor of CH4 than that of manure emissions hence primary efforts were made on reducing enteric emissions, with minor attention to dung emissions. Many researches were conducted by dietary manipulation to mitigate enteric CH4 emission. However dietary manipulation also had significant effects on manure GHGs emissions too. Several works proved that manure CH4 emissions were increased with high level of concentrate supplementation despite reduction in enteric CH4. Fat and CP content of the diet has shown inconsistent results on manure CH4 emissions. Amount of concentrate in the diet has shown little effect whereas dietary CP content exhibited conflicting effects on manure N2O emissions.

      • A Blockchain Framework for Investment Authorities to Manage Assets and Funds

Vinu Sherimon,Sherimon P.C.,Jeff Thomas,Kevin Jaimon International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2023 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.23 No.11

Investment authorities are broad financial institutions that carefully manage investments on behalf of the national government using a long-term value development approach. To provide a stronger structure or framework for In-vestment Authorities to govern the distribution of funds to public and private markets, we've started research to create a blockchain-based prototype for managing and tracking numerous finances of such authorities. We have taken the case study of Oman Investment Authority (OIA) of Sultanate of Oman. Oman's wealth is held in OIA. It is an organization that oversees and utilizes the additional capital generated by oil and gas profits in public and private markets. Unlike other Omani funds, this one focus primarily on assets outside the Sultanate. The operation of the OIA entails a huge number of transactions, necessitating a high level of transparency and administration among the parties involved. Currently, OIA relies on various manuals to achieve its goals, such as the Authorities and Responsibilities manual, the In-vestment Manual, and the Code of Business Conduct, among others. In this paper, we propose a Blockchain based framework to manage the operations of OIA. Blockchain is a part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and it is re-shaping every industry. The main components of every blockchain are assets and participants. The funds are the major assets in the proposed study, and the participants are the various fund shareholders/recipients. The block-chain's transactions are all safe, secure, and immutable, and it's part of a trustless network. The transactions are simple to follow and verify. By replacing intermediary firms with smart contracts, blockchain-based solutions eliminate any middlemen in the fund allocation process.

      • Iron and Cobalt Complexes of 2,3,7,8-Tetrahydroacridine-4,5(1<i>H</i>,6<i>H</i>)-diimine Sterically Modulated by Substituted Aryl Rings for the Selective Oligomerization to Polymerization of Ethylene

        Appukuttan, Vinu Krishnan,Liu, Yinshan,Son, Bong Chul,Ha, Chang-Sik,Suh, Hongsuk,Kim, Il American Chemical Society 2011 Organometallics Vol.30 No.8

<P>A new series of Fe(II) and Co(II) complexes of sterically modulated 2,3,7,8-tetrahydroacridine-4,5(1<I>H</I>,6<I>H</I>)-diimine by substituted aryl rings are synthesized. The complex synthesis is achieved through a one-pot methodology by reacting one equivalent of 2,3,7,8-tetrahydroacridine-4,5(1<I>H</I>,6<I>H</I>)-dione with two equivalents of required aniline derivatives together with Fe or Co salt in boiling acetic acid. The single-crystal X-ray analyses of Fe and Co complexes bearing a 2,6-diisopropyl-substituted ligand, (<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′<I>E</I>,<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′<I>E</I>)-<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-(2,3,7,8-tetrahydroacridine-4,5(1<I>H</I>,6<I>H</I>)-diylidene)bis(2,6-diisopropylaniline), show a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry for the metal center, a deviation from square-pyramidal geometry due to the opening up of the coordination sphere originating from structural rigidity of the carbonyl carbon atom achieved through cyclization. All the complexes show high activity toward ethylene activation when treated with methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst. The <I>ortho</I> substituents of the aryl rings and the type of metal have a significant effect on ethylene activation and specifically on product distribution. The Fe complex with a 2,6-diisopropyl-substituted bis(imino)tetrahydroacridyl ligand produced polyethylene of moderate molecular weight (18 000). On changing the <I>ortho</I> substitution of the ligand from 2,6-diisopropyl to 2,6-dimethyl, the Co complexes produce polyethylene waxes and oligomers of predominantly α-olefins simultaneously, obeying Schulz−Flory distribution. The Co complexes bearing ligands with less sterically hindered substituents at the <I>ortho</I> position behave exclusively as dimerization catalysts.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/orgnd7/2011/orgnd7.2011.30.issue-8/om2000629/production/images/medium/om-2011-000629_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/om2000629'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

      • Imaging through scattering media using digital holography

        R. V, Vinu,Kim, Kyoohyun,Somkuwar, Atul S.,Park, YongKeun,Singh, Rakesh Kumar Elsevier 2019 OPTICS COMMUNICATIONS - Vol.439 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The holographic diffraction of a coherently illuminated object forms an in-line hologram behind the random scattering medium. The obstruction of the scattering layer scrambles the in-line hologram into a speckle pattern. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a technique for the single-shot imaging through a scattering medium based on the recovery and reconstruction of the in-line hologram from the far field speckle pattern. Using a new configuration, the proposed method enables the retrieval of the complex amplitude image of an object located at any arbitrary planes behind scattering medium. Experimental demonstration is carried out for both the transmittive and reflective objects. Results are presented for imaging of objects at various planes behind the scattering medium and also the transmitting type polystyrene beads. Furthermore, the quality of reconstruction is assessed by quantitatively evaluating the visibility and reconstruction efficiency of the reconstructed images at various longitudinal distances behind the scattering medium.</P>

A Method of Metallisation of Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Sandwich Antenna Reflector Dish for High-Frequency Applications

        Pankaj Agarwal,Vinu Viswanath,Ani K. John,Mathew Sebastian,Harikrishna S,Jigar Pandya,Sagi Sravan Kumar 한국항공우주학회 2023 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.24 No.2

CFRP sandwich structures have proved themselves as a good candidate for satellite antenna reflectors due to high bending stiffness with lower mass. Bare CFRP acts as a reflector for frequencies up to Ku-band beyond which reflective properties are insufficient. Studies are carried out by researchers to improve the reflectivity of CFRP sandwich structures and one of the widely adopted methods is metallisation of the reflective surface of CFRP. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of CFRP is much below the melting point of metals, which makes the process of metalising more challenging. This is overcome by a few approaches such as chemical vapour deposition, sputtering, and cold spray. In the present study, a unique concept of metalising the CFRP sandwich dish by co-curing it with copper-cladded polyimide film is presented. To facilitate the bond between CFRP and copper-cladded polyimide film, the resin available in CFRP prepreg itself is used during the co-curing process. The procedure was successfully adopted in a high-throughput satellite payload of ISRO missions.

      • Anionic clay as the drug delivery vehicle: tumor targeting function of layered double hydroxide-methotrexate nanohybrid in C33A orthotopic cervical cancer model

        Choi, Goeun,Piao, Huiyan,Alothman, Zeid A,Vinu, Ajayan,Yun, Chae-Ok,Choy, Jin-Ho DOVE MEDICAL PRESS 2016 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF NANOMEDICINE Vol.11 No.-

<P>Methotrexate (MTX), an anticancer agent, was successfully intercalated into the anionic clay, layered double hydroxides to form a new nanohybrid drug. The coprecipitation and subsequent hydrothermal method were used to prepare chemically, structurally, and morphologically well-defined two-dimensional drug-clay nanohybrid. The resulting two-dimensional drug-clay nanohybrid showed excellent colloidal stability not only in deionized water but also in an electrolyte solution of Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium with 10% fetal bovine serum, in which the average particle size in colloid and the polydispersity index were determined to be around 100 and 0.250 nm, respectively. The targeting property of the nanohybrid drug was confirmed by evaluating the tumor-to-blood and tumor-to-liver ratios of the MTX with anionic clay carrier, and these ratios were compared to those of free MTX in the C33A orthotopic cervical cancer model. The biodistribution studies indicated that the mice treated with the former showed 3.5-fold higher tumor-to-liver ratio and fivefold higher tumor-to-blood ratio of MTX than those treated with the latter at 30 minutes postinjection.</P>
