This paper studies a frame-loss-free shunt system for broadband optical fiber transmission lines. This system switches transmitting optical pulses between duplicated optical fibers to avoid any interruption to communication. A high-resolution measurement technique is necessary to evaluate the optical fiber length. We applied an interferometry technique to adjust 15 km duplicated optical lines at a resolution of 10 mm. An optical line switching system and procedure are designed for use in replacing in-service optical lines. A free space optics (FSO) system adjusts the length of an in-service optical line by up to 100 m. A gigabit ether-passive optical network (GE-PON) line is successfully replaced with an extended line while maintaining transmission.
Librarian Robot Controlled by Mathematical AIM Model
Masahiko Mikawa,Masahiro Yoshikawa,Takeshi Tsujimura,Kazuyo Tanaka 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8
This paper presents a librarian robot that has sleep and wake functions. This robot is equipped with a laser range finder for tracking library users’ behaviors, a microphone for conversation with a user and a stereo vision. A lot of processes run in parallel in this system, operations of these processes are controlled by our proposed mathematical Activation-Input-Modulation (AIM) model, that can express consciousness states, such as wake or sleep based on stimuli detected by the external sensors. In a waking state, sensory information with stimuli is mainly processed. In a sleep state, most processing is paused, or information stored in memories during waking is mainly processed. Moreover, this system has two kinds of memories. One is a memory stored when external stimuli are detected, the other is a memory stored when no stimulus is detected. Both dynamic and gradual changes of sensory information can be stored by these functions.
Collimator Focus Adjustment for Free Space Optics System Using Single-mode Optical Fibers
Koichi Yoshida,Kuniaki Tanaka,Kazunori Katayama,Takeshi Tsujimura,Yuji Azuma 제어로봇시스템학회 2009 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2009 No.8
This paper presents a method for adjusting a free space optics (FSO) system that links two single-mode optical fibers (SMFs) using collimators. It operates as if the two SMFs were seamlessly connected without the need for any photoelectric devices. Collimator focusing as well as axis alignment is critical for low loss transmission and is performed using an opto-mechatronic system in the proposed method.

Purpose: As the concept of late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) has gained increased attention, the treatment of eugonadal patients with LOH symptom has become a clinical problem. Previous studies have shown the possible benefits of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) on the somatic, psychological and sexual functions. We therefore conducted this randomized, double‑blind, placebo‑controlled study to confirm the efficacy and safety of 5-ALA for LOH symptoms. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two eugonadal subjects with LOH symptoms were randomly divided into a 5-ALA group (n=15) and a placebo group (n=17). Treatment was continued for 8 weeks. The change of the Aging Males’ Symptoms (AMS) scale score and several biochemical and endocrinological variables during treatment were compared between the groups. Results: After treatment, the change in the total AMS in the 5-ALA group was significantly greater than that in the placebo group (-7.4±4.7 vs. -4.9±4.9, p=0.029). However, the differences between the groups in the change of the somatic, psychological, and sexual sub-scores of the AMS did not reach the statistical significance, although these changes in the 5-ALA group were greater than those in the placebo group. Furthermore, the change in the biochemical and endocrinological variables in the two groups did not differ to a statistically significant extent. During the 8-week treatment period, no patients discontinued 5-ALA due to treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). Conclusions: The intake of 5-ALA for 8 weeks was beneficial for eugonadal patients with symptoms of LOH and no severe TEAEs was experienced. 5-ALA should be considered as an option for those patients.
