        There is growing recognition that young children are familiar with nai"ve physics, and construct their own theory about the natural world from early childhood. The research reported in this study focuses on intellectual play activities involving pendulums carried out by young children at a kinder - garten in Japan. Over the course of three weeks, five-year-old children partic - ipated in these pendulum play activities. They made pendulums by themselves, tried them out, compared them with others, identified variables in moving, controlled these variables, and communicated their findings with others in the context of free guided play. Throughout these activities, the children changed their sense making of pendulums as objects of art to objects for investigation. Simple equipment, such as weight balances and counters, seemed to develop their scientific and technological competency. Their findings were displayed on a communication board so that they could appreciate and discuss them with each other. Socio-cultural aspects of science and technology in our glob - al society are coming into the spotlight in the field of science education. Drawing on recent reviews, this paper proposes some implications in relation to the theory and practice of science activities for young children that aim to develop their scientific, technological, and social competency in early child - hood.

        An experimental and numerical study on temperature gradient and thermal stress of CFST truss girders under solar radiation

        Concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) composite girder is a new type of structures for bridge constructions. The existing design codes cannot be used to predict the thermal stress in the CFST truss girder structures under solar radiation. This study is to develop the temperature gradient curves for predicting thermal stress of the structure based on field and laboratory monitoring data. An in-field testing had been carried out on Ganhaizi Bridge for over two months. Thermal couples were installed at the cross section of the CFST truss girder and the continuous data was collected every 30 minutes. A typical temperature gradient mode was then extracted by comparing temperature distributions at different times. To further verify the temperature gradient mode and investigate the evolution of temperature fields, an outdoor experiment was conducted on a 1:8 scale bridge model, which was installed with both thermal couples and strain gauges. The main factors including solar radiation and ambient temperature on the different positions were studied. Laboratory results were consistent with that from the in-field data and temperature gradient curves were obtained from the in-field and laboratory data. The relationship between the strain difference at top and bottom surfaces of the concrete deck and its corresponding temperature change was also obtained and a method based on curve fitting was proposed to predict the thermal strain under elevated temperature. The thermal stress model for CFST composite girder was derived. By the proposed model, the thermal stress was obtained from the temperature gradient curves. The results using the proposed model were agreed well with that by finite element modelling.

        Analysis of Local Vibrations in the Stay Cables of the Hizen-Takashima Bridge

        Local parametric vibrations of the stay cables of the Hizen-Takashima Bridge, which is currently under construction, are studied. This bridge is a composite cable-stayed bridge with a steel girder and concrete towers. The natural frequencies of the global vibration modes are obtained using a three-dimensional FEM model. Relations between global natural frequencies and the local natural frequencies of the stay cables are first demonstrated and the results are compared with other cable-stayed bridges. The local vibrations of the stay cables at the support during global motion are obtained and the properties of the local vibrations are discussed.         Visual mismatch negativity (v-MMN) in electroencephalographic (EEG) record provides an index of preattentive information processing of the brain v-MMN is considered to reflect schizophrenia. The positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS) is usually used in clinical diagnosis on patients with schizophyenia for estimating the degree of disorder. In this study, the relationship between v-MMN and PANSS was analyzed. Characteristic parameters of peals including N1, N2, P300, and MMN were established respectively. Estimated function was constructed by selected parameters. P300 was most significant characteristic related to all items of FANSS.

        Mangiferin Induces Apoptosis by Suppressing Bcl-xL and XIAP Expressions and Nuclear Entry of NF-κB in HL-60 Cells

        Mangiferin, 1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxyxanthone-C2-β-D-glucoside (C-glucosylxanthone), is a xanthone derivative that is widely distributed in higher plants. Recently, mangiferin was found to exhibit potential antitumor effects. However, the molecular mechanisms of this effect have not been elucidated. In the present study, we attempt to clarify the mechanism of mangiferininduced apoptosis in the human acute myeloid leukemia cell line HL-60; mangiferin was found to induce apoptosis. We also observed a concurrent increase in caspase-3 activity and DNA fragmentation. Furthermore, on examining the survival signals expressed during apoptotic induction, we observed that mangiferin caused a remarkable decrease in the nuclear entry of NF-κB p65. However, there were no changes in the expression of other survival signals,such as extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, protein kinase B, and p38 mitogenactivated protein kinase. In addition, mangiferin suppressed the expressions of Bcl-xL and XIAP; however, we did not note any changes in the levels of Bcl-2, Bax, and Bim. These results indicate that mangiferin induces apoptosis by suppressing NF-κB activation and expressions of Bcl-xL and XAIP. These findings suggest that mangiferin may be useful as an anticancer agent and can be used in combination therapy with other anticancer drugs for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia.
