      • Rapid method for determination of anthocyanin glucosides and free delphinidin in grapes using u-HPLC.

        <P>A rapid method for the determination of anthocyanin glucosides and free delphinidin in food using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (u-HPLC) was validated through tests of precision, accuracy and linearity. The u-HPLC separation was performed on a reversed-phase C18 column (particle size 2 ?m, i.d. 2 mm, length 100 mm) with a photodiode array detector. The limits of detection and quantification of the u-HPLC analyses ranged from 0.07 to 0.65 mg/kg for nine types of anthocyanin glucosides and from 0.08 to 0.26 mg/kg for delphinidin aglycone. The intra-day and inter-day precision of individual anthocyanin glucosides and delphinidin aglycone were less than 9.42%. All calibration curves showed good linearity (coefficient of determination = 0.99) within the tested ranges. The rapid and simultaneous u-HPLC method presented in this study significantly improved the speed, sensitivity and resolution of the analyses of nine types of anthocyanin glucosides and free delphidinin aglycone in grapes.</P>

        <B>Abstract</B><P>A rapid method for the simultaneous determination of flavonol aglycones in food using ultra-high-performance LC (u-HPLC) coupled with a heating-block acidic hydrolysis method was validated in terms of precision, accuracy, and linearity. The u-HPLC separation was performed on an RP C18 column (particle size 2 μm id, 2 mm, length 100 mm) with a photodiode array detector. The LOD and LOQ of the u-HPLC analyses were 0.15 and 0.47 mg/kg for myricetin, 0.09 and 0.28 mg/kg for quercetin, 0.16 and 0.49 mg/kg for kaempferol, and 0.08 and 0.25 mg/kg for isorhamnetin. The intraday and interday precisions of the individual flavonol aglycones were less than 9.31%. All calibration curves exhibited good linearity (r2 = 0.99) within the tested ranges. Total run time of u-HPLC was 13 min. The rapid u-HPLC method presented herein significantly improved the speed, sensitivity, and resolution of the analyses of myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin in food.</P>

        Correlation of Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study Findings With Radionuclide Salivagram in Chronic Brain-Injured Patients

        Objective To investigate the correlation between videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and radionuclide salivagram findings in chronic brain-injured patients with dysphagia. Methods Medical records of chronic brain-injured patients who underwent radionuclide salivagram and VFSS were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups according to salivagram findings. Differences in patient characteristics and clinical factors, including Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), Functional Ambulatory Category (FAC), feeding method, tracheostomy state, and VFSS findings between the two groups were investigated. Results A total of 124 patients were included in this study. There were no significant differences in MMSE, MBI, FAC, feeding method, and presence of tracheostomy between the two groups. However, the incidence of aspiration pneumonia history was significantly higher in the positive salivagram group. The Functional Dysphagia Scale (FDS) was significantly associated with positive salivagram findings, especially in the pharyngeal phase. A multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that laryngeal elevation and epiglottic closure was statistically significant FDS parameter in predicting salivary aspiration on a salivagram (odds ratio=1.100; 95% confidence interval, 1.017– 1.190; p=0.018). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of FDS in the pharyngeal phase showed that an optimum sensitivity and specificity of 55.1% and 65.4%, respectively, when the cut-off value was 39. Conclusion In chronic brain-injured patients, inappropriate laryngeal elevation and epiglottic closure is predictive variable for salivary aspiration. Therefore, performing a radionuclide salivagram in patients with FDS of 39 or less in the pharyngeal phase for prevents aspiration pneumonia from salivary aspiration.

        The Usefulness of 18F-FDG PET to Differentiate Subtypes of Dementia: The Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Background and Purpose: Dementia subtypes, including Alzheimer’s dementia (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), pose diagnostic challenges. This review examines the effectiveness of 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (18F-FDG PET) in differentiating these subtypes for precise treatment and management. Methods: A systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was conducted using databases like PubMed and Embase to identify studies on the diagnostic utility of 18F-FDG PET in dementia. The search included studies up to November 16, 2022, focusing on peer-reviewed journals and applying the gold-standard clinical diagnosis for dementia subtypes. Results: From 12,815 articles, 14 were selected for final analysis. For AD versus FTD, the sensitivity was 0.96 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.88–0.98) and specificity was 0.84 (95% CI, 0.70–0.92). In the case of AD versus DLB, 18F-FDG PET showed a sensitivity of 0.93 (95% CI 0.88-0.98) and specificity of 0.92 (95% CI, 0.70–0.92). Lastly, when differentiating AD from non-AD dementias, the sensitivity was 0.86 (95% CI, 0.80–0.91) and the specificity was 0.88 (95% CI, 0.80–0.91). The studies mostly used case-control designs with visual and quantitative assessments. Conclusions: 18F-FDG PET exhibits high sensitivity and specificity in differentiating dementia subtypes, particularly AD, FTD, and DLB. This method, while not a standalone diagnostic tool, significantly enhances diagnostic accuracy in uncertain cases, complementing clinical assessments and structural imaging.

        서비스 진정성의 구성 차원

        본 연구의 주요 목적은 서비스 진정성의 다차원적 특성에 주목하여 서비스 진정성에 내재된 구조적 특성을 밝히고, 다항목 척도 개발 절차에 근거하여 신뢰성과 타당성이 있는 서비스 진정성 측정도구를 개발하는 것이다. 이러한 연구 목적 수행을 위해 진정성과 관련한 폭넓은 분야의 선행연구 고찰과 FGI를 통하여 서비스 진정성의 구성 차원과 각 차원별 측정 항목을 추출하였다. 이후 두 차례의 조사 과정을 거쳐 추출한 항목들을 정제하며 서비스 진정성의 내재된 구조적 차원을 발견하였다. 1차 조사에서는 212명의 대학생을 대상으로 한 설문 조사를 통해 추출한 항목들의 신뢰성과 타당성을 검증하며 항목을 정제하였다. 그리고 2차 조사에서는 1차 조사 과정을 통해 정제된 문항들에 대해 일반인 300명을 대상으로 하는 설문 조사 과정을 통해 항목들의 신뢰성과 타당성을 재확인하였다. 이러한 절차를 거쳐 본 연구는 서비스 진정성의 구성 차원을 진실성, 공감성, 일관성, 신뢰성으로 규명하고 총 16개의 측정 항목을 제안하였다. 이러한 연구 결과는 서비스 진정성에 내재된 차원의 특성을 이론적, 실증적으로 규명함으로써 서비스 진정성을 보다 본질적으로 이해 가능하게 하였으며, 신뢰성과 타당성이 검증된 측정 도구를 제안함으로써 향후 서비스 진정성 관련 이론적 연구를 촉진할 수 있다는 점에서 학문적으로 의의가 있다. The purpose of this research is to identify the dimensions of service authenticity and develop measures to adequately capture multi-dimensional construct of service authenticity. Initial item development was conducted through extensive previous literature reviews and focus group interview. The items were then examined empirically with two separate samples. The first survey sampled 212 college students and found that items formed reliable and valid scales for each of the constructs and separated into distinct four factors. For the second survey, 300 consumers were sampled and results supported the reliability and validity of the scale as a measure of service authenticity. From these results, this research suggests the sub-dimensions of service authenticity as integrity, empathy, consistency, trust with 16 measurement items. The theoretical implications of this service authenticity scale for scholars are discussed.

        A Study on the Relationship between Self-Efficacy Beliefs and Comprehension in English Reading

        The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy beliefs and comprehension in English reading. A total of 219 Korean EFL middle school students completed the questionnaires on reading self-efficacy beliefs. To measure students` reading comprehension, English scores of a province-run-achievement test were used. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between reading self-efficacy beliefs and reading comprehension. The dependent variable was reading comprehension, and the independent variable was reading self-efficacy beliefs with the subfactors of Initiative, Effort, Performance, and Persistence. The result of the study showed that two variables of Effort and Performance were significant to predict the variance in reading proficiency (b=0.241 and b=0.248, p<0.05, respectively). In addition, R<sup> 2</sup>was 0.343 (p<0.01). This means that 34.3.1% of variance of reading proficiency was accounted for by the linear combination of reading self-efficacy beliefs. These results imply that there is a strong relationship between reading self-efficacy beliefs and reading proficiency. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are discussed.

        A Study on the Correlation between Self-Efficacy Beliefs and Strategies in English Reading

        The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between reading strategies and reading self-efficacy beliefs. A total of 219 Korean EFL middle school students completed the questionnaires on L2 reading strategies and reading self-efficacy beliefs. Canonical correlation analysis was conducted to examine the correlation between two sets of dependent variables and independent variables. The dependent variable set consisted of Global, Support, and Problem-Solving Strategies underlying reading strategies, and the independent variables were Initiative, Effort, Performance, and Persistence within reading self-efficacy beliefs. The study results showed that 32.9% of the variance between the dependent variable set of reading strategies and independent variable set of reading self-efficacy beliefs was explained by the canonical variate. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are discussed.

        Functional Genomic Approaches Using the Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as a Model System

        Since the completion of the genome project of the nematode C. elegans in 1998, functional genomic approaches have been applied to elucidate the gene and protein networks in this model organism. The recent completion of the whole genome of C. briggsae, a close sister species of C. elegans, now makes it possible to employ the comparative genomic approaches for identifying regulatory mechanisms that are conserved in these species and to make more precise annotation of the predicted genes. RNA interference (RNAi) screenings in C. elegans have been performed to screen the whole genome for the genes whose mutations give rise to specific phenotypes of interest. RNAi screens can also be used to identify genes that act genetically together with a gene of interest. Microarray experiments have been very useful in identifying genes that exhibit co-regulated expression profiles in given genetic or environmental conditions. Proteomic approaches also can be applied to the nematode, just as in other species whose genomes are known. With all these functional genomic tools, genetics will still remain an important tool for gene function studies in the post genome era. New breakthroughs in C. elegans biology, such as establishing a feasible gene knockout method, immortalized cell lines, or identifying viruses that can be used as vectors for introducing exogenous gene constructs into the worms, will augment the usage of this small organism for genome-wide biology.
