        Unilateral Oculomotor Nerve Palsy as a Rare Manifestation of Isolated Pre-Communicating Segment of Posterior Cerebral Artery Thrombosis

        Ipsilateral mydriasis (IM) is usually not acute. However, the acute occurrence of unilateral dilated pupil may result in acute ischemic stroke. Herein, we present 3 patients with IM, lateral eye deviation, ptosis, and contralateral hemiparesis due to isolated occlusion of the pre-communicating segment of the posterior cerebral artery with preservation of the posterior communicating artery, which was successfully treated by emergent mechanical thrombectomy. In a 3-month follow-up, all patients were independent without any neurological deficits.

        Application of the compressive-force path concept in the design of reinforced concrete indeterminate structures: A pilot study

        In the past, physical models have been proposed, in compliance with the concept of the compressive-force path, for the realistic design of various statically determinate structural concrete members. The present work extends these models so as to encompass indeterminate RC structural forms. Pilot tests conducted on continuous beams and fixed-ended portal frames have revealed that designing such members to present-day concepts may lead to brittle types of failure. On the other hand, similar members designed on the basis of the proposed physical models attained very ductile failures. It appears that, unlike current design approaches, the compressive-force path concept is capable of identifying those areas where failure is most likely to be triggered, and ensures better load redistribution, thus improving ductility. The beneficial effect of proper detailing at the point of contraflexure in an indeterminate RC member is to be noted.

      • A Cost Effective Virtual Cluster with Hadoop Framework for Big Data Analytics

        Big data processing is currently becoming increasingly important research field in computer technology professionals due to the continuous growth of the amount of data generated by various fields. However, the processing of large-scale research data requires cluster technology infrastructure which causes huge investments for educational institutions. Hadoop is an open-source framework that allows for distributed storage and processing of very large data sets on computer clusters built from commodity hardware. This technology is being widely used for the analysis of large datasets. This paper focuses on proposes a low cost scalable hadoop virtual cluster platform and the performance of hadoop irtual cluster. We first describe the design and implementation of a virtual datacenter using hadoop framework. Then we perform a set of experiments to investigate the performance of virtual datacenter with standard datasets. For experiment and evaluation, the Cloudera's distribution of Apache Hadoop (CDH) is installed and configured on the DIU Cloud and Big Data Lab as a prototype implementation of a virtual data center and tested with 40 workstations. In this paper, we use TPC BENCHMARK ™ DS” by-Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) benchmarks for evaluation virtual data center performance. The contributions of this paper, is to design model and implement a cost effective elastic virtual data center with hadoop framework and resource utilizations for educational institutions to provide high performance for distributed and parallel processing; as well as, Identify the bottlenecks of this systems e.g. bandwidth of network connectivity with all nodes in the lab.

        Impact of Serological and Histological Factors on Neurological Manifestations in Children and Adults with Celiac Disease

        Purpose: Celiac disease (CD) is a common autoimmune disease with extra-intestinal manifestations, including neurological disorders. There are few reports to assess various factors in increasing the chances of developing neurological disorders in CD, so we designed this study. Methods: All patients with CD at any age who had been referred to the Celiac Clinic were evaluated for neurological problems. CD was defined as IgA anti-transglutaminase antibodies (anti-tTG) of 18 IU/mL or higher in serology and Marsh type I or more severe in histopathological evaluation. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the impact of various independent variables on the neurological manifestations. Results: A total of 540 patients enrolled in this study. A 360 (66.7%) of patients were children. A 64.8% and 35.2% were female and male, respectively. Overall, 34.1% of patients had neurological manifestation, including headache, neuropathy, epilepsy, and ataxia. The odds of developing neurological manifestations in children were significantly lower than in adults (odds ratio [OR], 0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.45-0.96; p=0.03) and in patients with gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms significantly higher than in the group without GI manifestations (OR, 1.77; 95% CI, 1.18-2.63; p=0.005). Other variables, including Marsh classification (OR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.18-1.11; p=0.08) and anti-tTG levels (OR, 1.00; 95% CI, 0.999-1.001; p=0.59) did not significantly increase the chances of developing neurological disorders. Conclusion: Our study showed that increasing age and the presence of GI symptoms, but not serological and histological findings, could increase the chances of developing neurological diseases in CD patients.

        A Low Frequency Band Watermarking with Weighted Correction in the Combined Cosine and Wavelet Transform Domain

        A combined DWT and DCT based watermarking technique of low frequency watermarking with weighted correction is proposed. The DWT has excellent spatial localization, frequency spread and multi-resolution characteristics, which are similar to the theoretical models of the human visual system (HVS). The DCT based watermarking techniques offer compression while DWT based watermarking techniques offer scalability. These desirable properties are used in this combined watermarking technique. In the proposed method watermark bits are embedded in the low frequency band of each DCT block of selected DWT sub-band. The weighted correction is also used to improve the imperceptibility. The extracting procedure reverses the embedding operations without the reference of the original image. Compared with the similar approach by DCT based approach and DWT based approach, the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm apparently preserves superiori mage quality and robustness under various attacks such as JPEG compression, cropping, sharping, contrast adjustments and so on.

        A sonochemical-assisted method for synthesis of BaFe12O19 nanoparticles and hard magnetic nanocomposites

        Hard magnetic BaFe12O19 (BaFe) nanoparticles were synthesized via a facile sonochemical-assisted reaction. BaFe nanoparticles were then added to acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and cellulose acetate (CA) in order to make magnetic nanocomposites. Nanoparticles and nanocomposites were then characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The magnetic properties of the samples were also investigated using an alternating gradient force magnetometer. The barium ferrite nanoparticles exhibit ferrimagnetic behaviour at room temperature, with a saturation magnetization of 53 emu/g and a coercivity of 2430 Oe. Distribution of the BaFe12O19 nanoparticles into the polymeric matrixes increases the coercivity dramatically.

        Purification, structural analysis and mechanism of murine macrophage cell activation by sulfated polysaccharides from <i>Cystoseira indica</i>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Sulfated polysaccharides were isolated and purified from the water extract of <I>Cystoseira indica</I> using DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow column to evaluate their structure and macrophage stimulating capacity. Crude and fractionated polysaccharides, CIF<SUB>1</SUB> and CIF<SUB>2</SUB>, were mostly composed of neutral sugars (73.1%–78.6%) with relatively lower amounts of acidic sugars (1.3%–9.0%) and sulfate esters (6.9%–9.7%). The polymer chains of polysaccharides were mainly built of different levels of glucose (2.1%–30.8%), fucose (17.2%–24.4%), mannose (17.8%–20.6%) and galactose (16.7%–17.3%). The weight average molecular weight (<I>M</I> <SUB>w</SUB>) of polysaccharides varied between 573.1 × 10<SUP>3</SUP> g/mol to 1146.6 × 10<SUP>3</SUP> g/mol. The CIF<SUB>2</SUB> polysaccharide, as the most immunostimulating polysaccharide, remarkably induced the release of nitric oxide and inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 from RAW264.7 murine macrophage cells through NF-κB and PAMKs transduction signaling pathways via cell surface TLR4. The interconnections of sugars in CIF<SUB>2</SUB> polysaccharide were complex with (1→3)-fucopyranose, (1→2,3,4)-glucopyranose, (→1)-galactopyranose, (→1)-xylopyranose, (1→2)-rhamnopyranose and (1→2,3)-mannopyranose units being the most predominant residues.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Sulfated polysaccharides were isolated from <I>Cystoseira indica.</I> </LI> <LI> Polysaccharides exerted high RAW264.7 macrophage stimulating activity. </LI> <LI> RAW264.7 cells were activated through NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. </LI> <LI> TLR4 was the major cell surface receptor interacting polysaccharides with RAW264.7 cells. </LI> <LI> The main backbone of the polysaccharides was consisted of (1→3)-fucopyranosyl units. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Concha bullosa, nasal septal deviation, and their impacts on maxillary sinus volume among Emirati people: A cone-beam computed tomography study

        Purpose: To determine the prevalence of concha bullosa (CB) and nasal septal deviation (NSD) and their impact on maxillary sinus volume (MSV). Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images of 106 Emirati people were used in this study. The direction and angle of septal deviation were calculated. The presence of CB, which could be unilateral, contralateral, or bilateral in relation to the direction of NSD, was also recorded. MSV was measured using reconstructed Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine images on Dolphin 3D imaging software version 11.8 premium (Dolphin Imaging, Chatsworth, CA, USA). P values<0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: CB was detected in 37.7% of the sample; 20.7% of the sample showed single unilateral CB and 16.6% had single bilateral CB. NSD was seen in 74.5% of the sample. In the participants with CB, 45.5% showed mild deviation, 34.4% showed moderate deviation, and only 12.5% showed severe septal deviation. CB, but not NSD, was associated with significantly higher MSV on the affected side (P=0.001). Conclusion: Although NSD was observed in more than two-thirds of the sample and CB was present in more than one-third of the sample, only CB had a significant impact on MSV.
