Work Analysis of Small Size Sugarcane Harvester using GPS and On-board Camera in Okinawa Island

Although sugarcane is one of the most important crops in Okinawa, the yield of sugarcane per unit area is showing a downward trend because of soil hardening owing to the tread pressure of harvesters. If lightweight, small-sized harvesters with a narrow harvest width are used as alternatives, the problem of soil hardening can be resolved; however, the operational efficiency is expected to decrease. Though a small-sized 36-kW sugarcane harvester is available, its use is still not popular. Its introduction to harvesting work is delayed, because the work performance of this machine is unclear. In this research, we investigated the performance of a 36-kW harvester using a global positioning system and an on-board camera. Position information and image data were acquired and analyzed by a geographic information system. Using these data, the actual work condition of the harvester was determined to obtain its work efficiency.
