Objective: The aim of this study is to review literatures on the usability of ubiquitous service, and examine whether two approaches-usability and service quality approaches-are sufficient for the evaluation of ubiquitous service. Background: The emergence of ubiquitous technology and subsequent changes in life are bringing about incoming issues in service industry. Just as mobile payment system enabled users to replace annoying cash exchange in return for new problems of privacy and security, so is happening with commercial prevailing of ubiquitous service. It is, therefore, important to put all possible issues into consideration in evaluating a service with new technology, which necessitates inter-disciplinary approaches. Method: Prior to examination, current service concepts of ubiquitous system are observed, and related literatures are reviewed to delineate the attributes of ubiquitous service. Then, collected attributes of ubiquitous service are categorized into 3 perspectives: technology-, service-, and user-oriented attributes. User-oriented attributes are examined if they can be evaluated by typical usability approaches. Similarly, both technology- and service-oriented attributes are examined if they can be evaluated by service-quality approaches. Results: For usability approach, 'invisible' and 'unobtrusive' attributes of ubiquitous service is hard to be captured because typical usability test is dependent upon what user perceives. Also, service quality approach lacks holistic point of view to evaluate the scope of service properly. Conclusion: An analysis of various evaluation methods presents that the evaluation of ubiquitous services should consider the purpose of evaluation, the focus of evaluation and various evaluation techniques for further development. Application: It is expected that the results of this study could provide new direction of evaluation method for ubiquitous service.

In a service environment, the spatial layout is an important factor that has a great impact on customers' behavioral characteristics including wayfinding and purchasing. Previous studies have shown a gap between marketing, focusing solely on profitability and satisfaction, and architecture, looking only into efficiency of pedestrian flow. To balance such disparity, this study suggests an integrated approach for assessing behavioral patterns in complex service environments. With the objective that complex service environments should aim to increase its profitability and efficiency while guaranteeing customer satisfaction, quantitative metrics was developed for evaluation. The metrics was defined to use data from behavior observation including path tracking, population counting, and gaze analysis, while previous studies have relied on abstract survey methods that were prone to sampling errors and loss of data. For validation of the metrics in a real world setting, a case study was conducted at 4 train stations in Korea. In the case study, experiments were conducted to gather the required data in all 4 train stations, while their physical layouts were also analyzed. With the results from the case study, comparative evaluation of the 4 train stations in terms of behavioral efficiency was possible, together with a discussion on the effect of their physical settings.

We have a feel for sliding control of mobile phone's upper cover through kinesthetic and tactile senses, and this feeling has an effect of affective evaluation for the mobile phone. But there are very few studies about control feels of products or mobile phones and design process mainly focuses on ensuring functional needs or aesthetic aspects of physical appearance. The purpose of this study is defining the control feel of slide type mobile phone using affective variable and engineering variables. A total of 25 various slide type mobile phone and 40 participants (male: 20, female: 20) were employed to evaluate the mobile phone samples using the questionnaire based on affective variables. Utilizing some multivariate statistical analysis such as ANOVA, Conjoint Analysis, Multi-Dimensional Scaling experiment result was analyzed. The result shows that how the control feel is explained by detailed affective variables and what changes have an effect on increasing user's satisfaction of control feel of mobile phone.

The objective of this study is to quantitatively incorporate user observation into usability evaluation of mobile interfaces using monitoring techniques in first- and third-person points of view. In this study, an experiment was conducted to monitor and record users' behavior using Ergoneers Dikablis, a gaze tracking device. The experiment was done with 2 mobile phones each with a button keypad interface and a touchscreen interface for comparative analysis. The subjects included 20 people who have similar experiences and proficiency in using mobile devices. Data from video recordings were coded with Noldus Observer XT to find usage patterns and to gather quantitative data for analysis in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. Results showed that the button keypad interface was generally better than the touchcreen interface. The movements of the fingers and gaze were much simpler when performing given tasks on the button keypad interface. While previous studies have mostly evaluated usability with performance measures by only looking at task results, this study can be expected to contribute by suggesting a method in which the behavioral patterns of interaction is evaluated.
