<P>Systematic molecular studies have not been performed on ecologically important brown algae (Sargassum) in the Gulf of California, Mexico, where 42 specific and infraspecific names have been recorded within this genus. We conducted phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal ITS and mitochondrial cox1 and cox3 sequences, along with detailed morphological observations of Sargassum collected in the Gulf of California. We confirmed the presence of six species, five previously described-S. herporhizum, S. horridum, S. johnstonii, S. lapazeanum, and S. sinicola, as well as the newly described Sargassum ulixei sp. nov. which is characterized by terete primary axes arising from the stipe, lanceolate to elliptical sessile ecostate blades with smooth margins, cryptostomata, ellipsoidal vesicles with a short mucron, and cylindrical to ellipsoidal receptacles. The individual analyses and subsequent phylogenetic analysis recognized two groups previously described by Dawson, one as Sargassum and other as Horridum. Our studies suggest that the Gulf of California is a region with endemic Sargassum species, and is clearly distinguished from the Pacific side of Baja California, where recently introduced species are common. Based on phylogenetic relationships, we propose two geographical origins for the Sargassum from the Gulf of California: a first group originating from the proto-Gulf, related to species from the northern hemisphere (including five species); and a second group, containing S. sinicola, introduced when the southern end opened at a later stage. </P>

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction is a strong predictor of mortality in pulmonary hypertension (PH). The goal of this study was to investigate whether right atrium (RA) and RV myocardial strain related to PH using speckle tracking echocardiography provide a superior estimation of RV systolic function than 2-dimensional (2D)-echo. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 22 patients with a diagnosis of PH stratified by right heart catheterization, and they were compared to a control group of 22 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. RESULTS: Global longitudinal peak systolic strain measured in the RV free wall from the apical 4 chamber view was −15% vs. −14.5% when measured from the subcostal view (p = 0.99). Mean longitudinal strain during reservoir phase, and longitudinal strain rate during atrial reservoir and passive conduit function was significantly impaired measured in the right atrial free wall in patients with PH. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed impaired LV contractility in patients with PH assessed by speckle tracking strain. RV free wall longitudinal strain does not correlate with any of the measurements of RV systolic function obtained by 2D echocardiography. A major strength of RV longitudinal strain is its ability to assess the RV function without the limitations of 2D parameters. The subcostal RV strain is a feasible and accurate alternative to conventional RV strain from the apical view in patients with poor acoustic apical 4-chamber windows. The RA strain and strain rates values may be a valuable additive to assess right-sided heart function.

Objective: Our study examined the impact of propriety blends of Bacillus strain probiotics on the performance, egg quality, and faecal microflora of laying hens. Methods: A total of 183 Institut de selection Animale (ISA) brown laying hens aged 23 weeks with an average body weight of 1,894±72 g were randomly allocated into 3 groups as control (corn-soybean meal based diet, CON), 0.5 g/kg Enterosure probiotics (ET1, 3×108 colony-forming unit [CFU]/kg feed), and 5 g/kg Enterosure probiotics (ET2, 3×109 CFU/kg feed) administered in mashed form. At the completion of each phase hen day egg production (HDEP), average egg weight (AEW), feed intake, and faecal microbiota were evaluated. Results: HDEP and AEW were higher (p<0.05) in the ET2-supplemented diet in phase 3 (week 9 to 12) compared with CON. Egg mass (EM) was higher (p<0.05) in phase 2 at ET2, and also higher (p<0.05) in phase 3 at the ET1 and ET2-supplemented diets compared with CON. Feed conversion ratio was lower (p<0.05) in phase 3 at the ET1 and ET2-supplemented diets, with ET2 being the lowest compared with ET1 and CON. Yolk colour was higher (p<0.05) in the ET-supplemented diets at phase 3 compared with CON. Bifidobacterium spp. was higher (p<0.05) in the ET2- supplemented diet compared with CON in phase 2, while in In phase 3, Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. were higher (p<0.05) in the ET-supplemented diets compared with CON. Coliforms were lower (p<0.05) in the ETsupplemented diets compared with CON in phase 3. Conclusion: The propriety blends of Bacillus strain probiotics supplements at 0.5 g/kg and 5 g/kg could improve the production and quality of eggs with more significance at 5 g/kg for HDEP, AEW and EM, which was achieved via the increase of beneficial microbiomes such as Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacterium spp., and the decrease of pathogenic microbiomes like Escherichia coli and Coliforms which was speculated to improve gut barrier function and the reproductive hormone.
