Vehicle braking in non-electrified rail systems wastes energy. Advanced flywheel technology presents a way to capture and reuse this braking energy to improve vehicle efficiency and so reduce the operating costs and environmental impact of diesel trains. This paper highlights the suitability of flywheels for rail vehicle applications, and proposes a novel mechanical transmission system to apply regenerative braking using a flywheel energy storage device. A computational model is used to illustrate the operation and potential benefits of the energy storage system.
Topic Classification for Suicidology
Read, Jonathon,Velldal, Erik,Ovrelid, Lilja Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Eng 2012 Journal of Computing Science and Engineering Vol.6 No.2
Computational techniques for topic classification can support qualitative research by automatically applying labels in preparation for qualitative analyses. This paper presents an evaluation of supervised learning techniques applied to one such use case, namely, that of labeling emotions, instructions and information in suicide notes. We train a collection of one-versus-all binary support vector machine classifiers, using cost-sensitive learning to deal with class imbalance. The features investigated range from a simple bag-of-words and n-grams over stems, to information drawn from syntactic dependency analysis and WordNet synonym sets. The experimental results are complemented by an analysis of systematic errors in both the output of our system and the gold-standard annotations.

As the effect of globalization has been to increase the level of language contact between speakers of different languages, English becomes to stand out as the leading world language as people express their need for a common tongue. However, this paper objects to English as a world language. In addition, this paper is against any other natural languages as well as multilingualism. Instead, this paper claims that the adoption of an artificial or "planned" language could a possible solution.

High-availability seamless redundancy (HSR) is a fault-tolerant protocol for Ethernet networks that provides two frame copies for each frame sent. Each copy is forwarded on a separate physical path. HSR is a potential candidate for several fault-tolerant Ethernet applications, including smart-grid communications. However, the major drawback of the HSR protocol is that it generates and circulates unnecessary frames within connected rings regardless of the presence of a destination node in the ring. This downside degrades network performance and can deplete network resources. Two simple but efficient approaches have previously been proposed to solve the above problem: quick removing (QR) and port locking (PL). In this paper, we will present a hybrid approach, QRPL, by combining QR with PL, resulting in further traffic reductions. Our analysis showed that network traffic is significantly reduced for a large-sized HSR connected ring network compared to the standard HSR protocol, QR, and PL.
Petunia 'Champagne'의 組織培養時 器官分化에 미치는 α-Tocopherol의 影響
李承雨,Read, Paul E. 경희대학교 부설 식량자원개발연구소 1988 硏究論文集 Vol.9 No.-
Research was conducted to investigated the effect of α-tocopherol on organogenesis of Petunia 'Champagne' cultured in vitro. In the leaf segments cultured in vitro, adventitious shoot formation was accelerated by the combinations of α-tocopherol with 0.2㎎/l BA, while was not affected by combinations of α-tocopherol and NAA. The capacity for adventitious root formation was promoted by both NAA concentrations. In combinations of 0.5㎎/l or 1.0㎎/l α-tocopherol with 0.05㎎/l NAA, a synergism for adventitious root formation seems to act in α-tocopherol and NAA. For in vitro shoot cutting derived from leaf segments, adventitious root formation was forced by the combinations of 0.5㎎/l or 1.0㎎/l α-tocopherol with both NAA concentrations. Especially, α-tocopherol in the medium without NAA slightly promoted an activity for adventitious root formation. The elongation of adventitious roots was suppressed by both NAA concentrations or combinations of α-tocopherol with NAA. However, the shoot length tended to be increase with both NAA concentrations. Fresh weight of adventitious root was effective with 0.5㎎/l α-tocopherol. These results suggest that α-tocopherol influences NAA-induced adventitious root and BA-induced adventitious shoot formation, possibly by a synergism of α-tocopherol with auxin or cytokinin. This investigation has been carried out at Department of Horticultural Science & Landscape Architecture, University of Minnesota, USA.
