Tests and finite element analysis on the local buckling of 420 MPa steel equal angle columns under axial compression

        G. Shi,Z. Liu,H.Y. Ban,Y. Zhang,Y.J. Shi,Y.Q. Wang 국제구조공학회 2012 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.12 No.1

Local buckling can be ignored for hot-rolled ordinary strength steel equal angle compression members, because the width-to-thickness ratios of the leg don’t exceed the limit value. With the development of steel structures, Q420 high strength steel angles with the nominal yield strength of 420 MPa have begun to be widely used in China. Because of the high strength, the limit value of the width-to-thickness ratio becomes smaller than that of ordinary steel strength, which causes that the width-to-thickness ratios of some hot-rolled steel angle sections exceed the limit value. Consequently, local buckling must be considered for 420 MPa steel equal angles under axial compression. The existing research on the local buckling of high strength steel members under axial compression is briefly summarized, and it shows that there is lack of study on the local buckling of high strength steel equal angles under axial compression. Aiming at the local buckling of high strength steel angles, this paper conducts an axial compression experiment of 420MPa high strength steel equal angles, including 15 stub columns. The test results are compared with the corresponding design methods in ANSI/AISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3. Then a finite element model is developed to analyze the local buckling behavior of high strength steel equal angles under axial compression, and validated by the test results. Followingthe validation, a finite element parametric study is conducted to study the influences of a range of parameters, and the analysis results are compared with the design strengths by ANSI/AISC 360-05 and Eurocode 3.

Efficacy of Cr (III) Supplementation on Growth, Carcass Composition, Blood Metabolites, and Endocrine Parameters in Finishing Pigs

        Wang, M.Q.,He, Y.D.,Lindemann, M.D.,Jiang, Z.G. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2009 Animal Bioscience Vol.22 No.10

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of trivalent chromium from different sources on growth, carcass composition, and serum parameters in finishing pigs. Ninety-six crossbred pigs with an initial average body weight of 65.57${\pm}$1.05 kg were blocked by body weight and randomly assigned to four treatments with three replicates. Pigs were offered one of four diets including a control diet or the control diet supplemented with 200 ${\mu}g/kg$ chromium from either chromium chloride ($CrCl_{3}$), chromium picolinate (CrPic) or chromium nanocomposite (CrNano) for 40 days. After completion of the feeding trial, eight pigs from each treatment were selected to collect blood samples, and slaughtered to measure carcass composition. The results showed that supplemental chromium had no significant effect on growth performance, while CrNano increased carcass lean proportion and loin Longissimus muscle area (p<0.05), and decreased carcass fat proportion and 10th rib backfat depth (p<0.05). CrPic supplementation also resulted in lower fat proportion and larger Longissimus muscle area (p<0.05). The addition of Cr from CrNano or CrPic decreased serum glucose (p<0.05) and increased concentrations of total protein and free fat acid in serum (p<0.05). Serum urea nitrogen, triglyceride and cholesterol were decreased (p<0.05), and serum high density lipoprotein and lipase activity were increased (p<0.05) with the supplementation of CrNano. Serum insulin was decreased (p<0.05) by supplemental Cr from CrNano or CrPic, and serum insulin-like growth factor I was increased significantly in the CrNano treated group. These results suggest that chromium nanocomposite has higher efficacy on carcass composition in pigs compared to the traditional chromium sources.

Influence of residual stress on the adhesive behavior of detonation gun sprayed WC-Co coatings

        Wang, T.G.,Liu, Y.,Wang, Q.,Gong, J.,Sun, C.,Kim, K.H. Elsevier 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.suppl2

The residual stresses generated during D-Gun spraying process act as pre-existing stresses and seriously affect the various types of coating performance. To produce a reliable coating, it is necessary to know the influence of residual stress on the adhesive behavior of coating/substrate system. Based on the residual stress formula for thick coatings and accurate curvature measurements, the residual stresses of D-Gun sprayed WC-Co coatings were obtained. And a strong link was built between the residual stress and the adhesive strength of the coating, namely, the compressive stress in the coating could significantly improve the adhesion, whereas the tensile stress weakened the adhesion. The larger compressive residual stress is in the coating, the stronger adhesion between the coating and substrate.

Synergistic cooperation and crosstalk between <i>MYD88L265P</i> and mutations that dysregulate CD79B and surface IgM

Wang, James Q.,Jeelall, Yogesh S.,Humburg, Peter,Batchelor, Emma L.,Kaya, Sarp M.,Yoo, Hee Min,Goodnow, Christopher C.,Horikawa, Keisuke The Rockefeller University Press 2017 The Journal of experimental medicine Vol.214 No.9

<P><I>CD79B</I> and <I>MYD88</I> mutations are frequently and simultaneously detected in B cell malignancies. It is not known if these mutations cooperate or how crosstalk occurs. Here we analyze the consequences of <I>CD79B</I> and <I>MYD88L265P</I> mutations individually and combined in normal activated mouse B lymphocytes. <I>CD79B</I> mutations alone increased surface IgM but did not enhance B cell survival, proliferation, or altered NF-κB responsive markers. Conversely, B cells expressing <I>MYD88L265P</I> decreased surface IgM coupled with accumulation of endoglycosidase H–sensitive IgM intracellularly, resembling the trafficking block in anergic B cells repeatedly stimulated by self-antigen. Mutation or overexpression of CD79B counteracted the effect of <I>MYD88L265P</I>. In B cells chronically stimulated by self-antigen, <I>CD79B</I> and <I>MYD88L265P</I> mutations in combination, but not individually, blocked peripheral deletion and triggered differentiation into autoantibody secreting plasmablasts. These results reveal that CD79B and surface IgM constitute a rate-limiting checkpoint against B cell dysregulation by <I>MYD88L265P</I> and provide an explanation for the co-occurrence of <I>MYD88</I> and <I>CD79B</I> mutations in lymphomas.</P>

Energy and Ileal Digestible Amino Acid Concentrations for Growing Pigs and Performance of Weanling Pigs Fed Fermented or Conventional Soybean Meal

        Wang, Y.,Lu, W.Q.,Li, D.F.,Liu, X.T.,Wang, H.L.,Niu, S.,Piao, X.S. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2014 Animal Bioscience Vol.27 No.5

A new strategy of co-inoculating Bacillus subtilis MA139 with Streptococcus thermophilus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used to produce fermented soybean meal (FSBM). Three experiments were conducted to determine the concentration of digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) (Exp. 1), apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of amino acids (AA) (Exp. 2), and feeding value (Exp. 3) of FSBM produced by this new strategy (NFSB) compared with soybean meal (SBM) and conventionally available FSBM (Suprotein). In Exp. 1, twenty-four barrows (initial body weight [BW] of $32.2{\pm}1.7kg$) were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 diets with 6 replicates per diet. A corn basal diet and 3 diets based on a mixture of corn and 1 of 3 soybean products listed above were formulated and the DE and ME contents were determined by the difference method. The results showed that there were no differences in DE and ME between SBM and either FSBM product (p>0.05). In Exp. 2, eight barrows (initial BW of $26.8{\pm}1.5kg$) were fitted with ileal T-cannulaes and used in a replicated $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. Three corn-starch-based diets were formulated using each of the 3 soybean products as the sole source of AA. A nitrogen-free diet was also formulated to measure endogenous losses of AA. The results showed that the SID of all AA except arginine and histidine was similar for NFSB and SBM (p>0.05), but Suprotein had greater (p<0.05) SID of most AA except lysine, aspartate, glycine and proline than NFSB. In Exp. 3, a total of 144 piglets (initial BW of $8.8{\pm}1.2$ kg) were blocked by weight and fed 1 of 4 diets including a control diet with 24% SBM as well as diets containing 6% and 12% NFSB or 12% Suprotein added at the expense of SBM. During d 15 to 28, replacing SBM with 6% NFSB significantly improved average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) (p<0.05) for nursery piglets. During the overall experiment, ADG of piglets fed diets containing 6% NFSB was significantly greater (p<0.05) than that of piglets fed SBM. In conclusion, fermentation with the new strategy did not affect the energy content or the AID and the SID of AA in SBM. However, inclusion of 6% NFSB in diets fed to nursery piglets improved performance after weaning likely as a result of better nutritional status and reduced immunological challenge.

      • Design of a compact dual-band branch line coupler using composite right/left-handed transmission lines

        Wang, Q.,Lim, J.,Jeong, Y. IET 2016 Electronics letters Vol.52 No.8

<P>The design of a compact dual-band (DB) branch line coupler (BLC) using composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines (TLs) is described. By properly choosing the parameters of the CRLH TLs, the structure yields phase responses of /2 and -/2 at two arbitrary operating frequencies. Employing this structure, a DB microstrip BLC operating at 0.93 and 1.78 GHz is achieved. The size of the proposed DB BLC is significantly compact, at 34.4% of the previous DB BLC when they are both designed using CRLH TLs for the same DB frequencies. The simulated and measured performances of the proposed DB BLC are reliable compared with those of the previous DB BLC.</P>

Spontaneous Hepatocellular Carcinoma after the Combined Deletion of Akt Isoforms

        Wang, Q.,Yu, W.N.,Chen, X.,Peng, X.d.,Jeon, S.M.,Birnbaum, M.J.,Guzman, G.,Hay, N. Cell Press 2016 CANCER CELL Vol. No.

Akt is frequently hyperactivated in human cancers and is targeted for cancer therapy. However, the physiological consequences of systemic Akt isoform inhibition were not fully explored. We showed that while combined Akt1 and Akt3 deletion in adult mice is tolerated, combined Akt1 and Akt2 deletion induced rapid mortality. Akt2-/- mice survived hepatic Akt1 deletion but all developed spontaneous hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is associated with FoxO-dependent liver injury and inflammation. The gene expression signature of HCC-bearing livers is similar to aggressive human HCC. Consistently, neither Akt1-/- nor Akt2-/- mice are resistant to diethylnitrosamine-induced hepatocarcinogenesis, and Akt2-/- mice display a high incidence of lung metastasis. Thus, in contrast to other cancers, hepatic Akt inhibition induces liver injury that could promote HCC.

Effects of first feed intake time on growth performance, nutrient apparent metabolic rate and intestinal digestive enzyme activities in broilers

        Wang, J.S.,Guo, T.Y.,Wang, Y.X.,Li, K.X.,Wang, Q.,Zhan, X.A. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.6

Objective: This experiment studied the effects of first feed intake time post-hatch on growth performance, nutrient apparent metabolic rate and intestinal digestive enzyme activities in broilers. Methods: Two thousand five hundred and twenty LingNan Yellow broilers were randomly allotted to seven treatments with six replicates of 60 each. The only experimental factor was the first feed intake time which was 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, and 54 hours after hatching. The whole experiment lasted for 21 days. Results: During the whole period, the 30 h treatment had the best body weight and average daily gain (p<0.05), followed by the 24 h group performance optimization. Also, the 30 h group was observed to have the best apparent metabolic rate for ether extract (p<0.05) and crude protein (p<0.05) and the highest activities of amylase, lipase and trypsin in small intestine. And the 24 h group was second only to the 30 h group in terms of the above two measures. Conclusion: These results indicated that the appropriate first feeding time of LingNan Yellow broilers was 24 to 30 hours after hatching.
