        Comparison of safety and analgesic efficacy of diclofenac sodium with etodolac after surgical extraction of third molars: a randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, parallel-group study

        Background: Surgical extraction of third molars is associated with postoperative pain and swelling at the extraction site. Pain is commonly managed using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Postoperative pain is usually moderate to severe in the first 12 h postoperatively and lasts for 3-5 days. However, with NSAIDs, these symptoms usually subside within 24 h. Diclofenac sodium and etodolac are NSAIDs, more selectively cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, with good analgesic efficacies. Methods: We compared the safety and analgesic efficacy of diclofenac sodium with etodolac peroral after surgical extraction of third molars in a double-blind, double-dummy, parallel-group study. The subjective pain improvement and pain relief after 2, 6, 24, 48, and 72 h using the visual analogue scale were measured as the study outcome. Results: Etodolac was equivalent to diclofenac sodium in pain alleviation at all postoperative time periods. No significant differences were found between diclofenac sodium and etodolac groups (P > 0.05). Both study medications were well tolerated and safe with mild adverse effects in only a few participants. Conclusion: Diclofenac sodium and etodolac are comparable in terms of analgesic efficacy and safety after surgical removal of third molars.

      • IL-10 prevents aging-associated inflammation and insulin resistance in skeletal muscle

        <P>Altered energy balance and insulin resistance are important characteristics of aging. Skeletal muscle is a major site of glucose disposal, and the role of aging-associated inflammation in skeletal muscle insulin resistance remains unclear. To investigate, we examined glucose metabolism in 18-mo-old transgenic mice with muscle-specific overexpression of IL-10 (M-IL10) and in wild-type mice during hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamping. Despite similar fat mass and energy balance, M-IL10 mice were protected from aging-associated insulin resistance with significant increases in glucose infusion rates, whole-body glucose turnover, and skeletal muscle glucose uptake (similar to 60%; P < 0.05), as compared to age-matched WT mice. This protective effect was associated with decreased muscle inflammation, but no changes in adipose tissue inflammation in aging M-IL10 mice. These results demonstrate the importance of skeletal muscle inflammation in aging-mediated insulin resistance, and our findings further implicate a potential therapeutic role of anti-inflammatory cytokine in the treatment of aging-mediated insulin resistance.</P>

      • Combined axial and lateral responses of tensioned buoyant platform tethers

        This paper presents the results of an investigation into the combined axial and lateral vibrations of the tethers of tensioned buoyant platforms, (TBPs). Wave-induced motions of the TBP excite tether vibrations through lateral forces at the tether top end (called external or forcing excitation in this paper) combined with a time varying axial force (called parametric excitations here). Although the forcing and parametric excitations have been considered separately in the research literature, this paper examines their combined effects-particularly with a view to determining tether behaviour for different water depths. The governing partial differential equation of tether lateral motion is reduced to a nonlinear differential equation and solved by a combination of the Romberg method and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. Comparisons for tether vibrations when taking both axial and lateral forcing into account and when considering axial and lateral forcing separately are presented. It is shown that the combined excitation gives greater amplitude of vibration with this feature being particularly dominant in even numbers of the instability region of the Mathieu stability chart. The frequency of oscillation of the combined response is also dependent on the relative magnitudes of axial and lateral excitations. The results demonstrate that the above is true for a wide range of water depths.

      • Bioinert membranes prepared from amphiphilic poly(vinyl chloride)-g-poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) graft copolymers

        Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane was hydrophilically modified by grafting with poly(oxyethylene methacrylate) (POEM) using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The successful grafting of PVC main chain by POEM was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The molecular weight and hydrophilicity of membranes increased with the amount of POEM grafting, as characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and contact angle measurement, respectively. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis revealed the microphase-separated structure of PVC-g-POEM and the domain spacing increased from 59.3 to 86.1nm with increasing grafting degree. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for the direct visualization of the mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cell and bacteria adhesion on the membrane surface. Protein adsorption and eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell adhesion tests showed that the bioinert properties of membranes were significantly increased with POEM content.

        Mating and Incidental Activities of Ram (Ovis aries) When Exposed to Ewe(s) and Competitor Ram in Pen Mating Condition

        An attempt was made to analyze the factors affecting mating performance of rams in pen mating systems. Due to many types of social interactions, mating performance of rams may decrease or increase. Six intact Muzaffarnagari rams were used and divided into three dominant subordinate pairs by food and ewe competition test. For dominant rams subordinate ram became competitor and vice versa. In the first experiment, ram was exposed to ewe but the competitor ram was kept outside the pen with the facility of visibility only. In the second experiment each ram was exposed to ewe along with the competitor ram and in third experiment ram was exposed to ewes (two) along with competitor ram in observation pen. Recordings of different mating and agonistic behaviour were done in all the experiments. It was found that subordinate ram's mating behaviour was inhibited by mere presence of a dominant ram out side without physical contact. However, when ram exposed to oestrus ewe(s) along with competitor ram, both dominant and subordinate rams spent much of their time in guarding activities instead of mating. In addition dominant ram tried to curtail the subordinate ram mating by agonistic interaction like fight and butting. Different guarding activities were observed either as active or passive type depending on level of dominanace. It was concluded that in a limited space the interaction of two or more rams might affect the number of services adversely.

      • DYNAMICS OF TENSION LEG PLATFORM TETHERS AT LOW TENSION. PART 2-COMBINED EXCITATION

        In conventional design practice, tension leg platform (TLPs) tethers are designed to be highly tensioned. This high pre-tension is, however, a significant restriction to the payload growth of TLPs. This paper reports on the second stage of an investigation into the vibrations of tethers at low tension. Unlike conventional approaches for slender marine structures, tethers are considered to be simultaneously subjected to time-varying axial forces (parametric excitation)and lateral forces (forcing excitation). Therefore, the tethers can be regarded as dynamic systems under combined excitation. In order to solve this combined excitation problem, the governing partial differential equation of lateral motion of a tether is reduced to a nonlinear differential equation. This nonlinear equation of combined excitation is solved by using both Romberg's method and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method together. It is found that taking account of combined excitation is of little importance compared to forcing excitation in the first instability region of the Mathieu stability chart. However, from the second instability regions onwards, that is, when the natural periods of tethers are equal or shorter than excitation periods, combined excitation becomes significant. Therefore, since the dynamic operating conditions of most tethers correspond to higher-order instability regions, it is necessary to consider combined excitation in the dynamic analysis of tethers. The results of theoretical developments on combined excitation are applied to example tethers and used to show that from the third instability regions onwards, tether lateral response amplitudes increase with pre-tension reduction, in the second instability region, the amplitudes do not change, whereas, in the first instability region, the response amplitudes rather decrease with pre-tension reduction.

        Ram Mating Behaviour under Different Social Conditions

        The present study was conducted to investigate the attributes of ram sexual behaviour under different social conditions. Six intact rams and eight overiectomized ewes were used in this experiment. Ewes were artificially brought into oestrus. All mating traits were recorded every 10 sec during a 1 h mating session under five social conditions viz., ram exposed to single oestrus ewe, ram exposed to single oestrus ewe and audience ram, ram exposed to multiple oestrus ewes, ram exposed to single oestrus ewe with competitor ram and ram exposed to multiple oestrus ewes with competitor ram. Mean intensity of the mating activities during the 1 h mating session under five social conditions was compared. Either vocalization or leg kicking was found to be the predominant teasing activity under all five conditions. Sniffing differed significantly (p<0.05) between different social conditions. Vocalization, leg kicking, and leg kicking with vocalization did not differ significantly (p<0.05) between different social conditions. Mounts/h in the multiple oestrus ewe condition was higher and differed significantly (p<0.05) from other social conditions. Ejaculations/h for the experimental ram was higher when exposed to multiple oestrus ewes in comparison to other social conditions. Mounts/ejaculation was low in the audience ram condition in comparison to the other four social conditions.

        Silver nanowire-templated ITO window for broadband photodetection

        Silver nanowires (AgNWs)-templated metal oxide layers were applied to Si; achieve excellent photoresponses for broad wavelengths. Without any intentional doping procedure, a quality Schottky photodetector was spontaneously realized by forming AgNWs-templated metal-oxide layers onto Si. This optically transparent hybrid window was achieved by AgNWs-templated grown ITO structures. AgNWs- templated ITO/Si Schottky photodetector showed excellent photoresponse ratio as high as 1270 and linear dynamic range 126dB. Remarkably, the AgNWs-Schottky photodetector responded to low intensity of light (10<SUP>-9</SUP>mWcm<SUP>-2</SUP>) without any external bias. The functional design of AgNWs-templated hybrid transparent conductors showed substantially enhanced carrier collection performances and can be applied in various photoelectric devices and applications.

      • High-performing MoS<sub>2</sub>-embedded Si photodetector

        Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a new class of materials that replace advanced functional materials like graphene, CNT etc., in photovoltaics and sensors. In the present work, the 2-dimensional tri-layer MoS<SUB>2</SUB> is applied for high-performing photodetector. Here, the conventional n-doped p-type Si (n-Si/p-Si) was coated with tri-layer MoS<SUB>2</SUB> film using CVD method. HRTEM reveals the presence of tri-layer with highly ordered lattice planes. Characteristic peaks of Mo and S are obtained in XPS profile. Due to spin-orbit coupling, the 3d band of Mo and 2p band of S are split into two states. Raman spectrum of MoS<SUB>2</SUB> film shows two peaks, corresponding to its in-plane and out-of-plane vibrational modes. The wave number difference between these modes is measured as 22.97cm<SUP>-1</SUP>, which ensures that there are three layers in MoS<SUB>2</SUB> film. The splitting of valence band generates multiple excitons which are marked as A and B in the absorption profile. The excitonic transition corresponds to the direct band gap of MoS<SUB>2</SUB> (ie., 1.9eV). The prepared MoS<SUB>2</SUB>/n-Si/p-Si photodetector includes two rectifying junctions with considerable built-in potentials. A high rectification ratio was measured as 51.37 to ensure the quality junction formation. The photoresponse ratio of the MoS<SUB>2</SUB>/n-Si/p-Si photodetector was obtained as 58.74 to confirm the quality junction formation between MoS<SUB>2</SUB> and Si with high detectivity of 5.42 x 10<SUP>14</SUP> Jones. Moreover, the extremely fast rise and fall times of 33 @?s and 30 @?s were achieved without any external bias application. The functional use of MoS<SUB>2</SUB> window design would provide the high potential for the enhanced photoelectric devices, such as photodetectors and solar cells.
