      • An Assessment of the Efficiency and Performance of the Distribution Chain of the Marine Capture Fisheries Products in Lucena Fish Port Complex (LFPC), Lucena City, Philippines

        Fritz Jay T,Dalawampu,Nanette A,Aquino,Jeanette Angeline B,Madamba,Rachelle A,Mariano 아시아무역학회 2019 Journal of Asia Trade and Business Vol.6 No.1

The study determined the efficiency and performance of the distribution chain of marine capture fisheries in Lucena Fish Port Complex, Lucena City, Philippines. A survey using a pre-tested questionnaire was conducted among 125 respondents consisting of fishermen, traders, truckers, wholesalers and retailers. Simple random sampling was used to identify the fishermen, traders and retailers while complete enumeration was done in the case of truckers and wholesalers. Descriptive, product flow, value chain and cost and return analyses were employed in the study. Based on the performance measures used in the study, including the gross margins computed, the performance of the distribution and transportation system of marine capture fisheries products in Lucena Fish Port Complex can be considered inefficient due to high transportation rates, high spoilage rate, and longer traveling hours than what is expected. The study recommended technology development for improved operations, introduction of the open bidding system to prevent information asymmetry, practice of responsible fishing, key players to assume other roles in the chain, planning ahead the use of alternative roads, ensuring proper management practices, construction of paved roads. securing fishing permits and full utilization of the cold storage facility.

      • Sustainability Reporting of Telecommunications Companies: Evidence from the Philippines

        Hanna D,Miranda-Quibot,Nanette A,Aquino,Juan Paulino S,Trespalacio,Junior,Mar B,Cruz 아시아무역학회 2020 Journal of Asia Trade and Business Vol.7 No.1

Purpose - The telecommunications companies in the Philippines are required to submit Sustainability Reports that disclose their economic, environmental, and social responsibilities according to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This is to show transparency in all their activities related to the economic, environmental and social dimensions that should be presented to different stakeholders. Thus, this study aimed to determine the extent of sustainability reporting of top telecommunications companies in the Philippines. Design/Methodology/Approach - The sustainability reports of two top telecommunications companies in the Philippines, namely, PLDT and Globe Telecom, were examined using content analysis and by assigning scores to the indicators disclosed in the reports. Findings - Based from the results, both companies took active participation in providing benefits, education, training and a good working environment for their employees while continuously providing support to the local community. PLDT extensively disclosed more information using the sustainability standards as compared to Globe Telecom. Research Implications - However, to strike a balance among the three dimensions, the indicators must be examined because correctly communicating the CSR activities covering the three dimensions is an effective way for the company to establish a good reputation and for the stakeholders to make the right decisions.

      • Halal Broiler Processing: The Case of Bounty Agro-Ventures Inc. and the Vitarich Corporation

        Ayesha Mae P. Pahm,Dia Noelle F. Velasco,Glenn N. Baticados,Nanette A. Aquino 한국무역연구원 2017 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.13 No.2

The study aimed to present an overview of the implementation of Halal practices in the broiler operation of Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI) and the VITARICH Corporation (VITARICH) in Davao City. Furthermore, it was conducted to increase the awareness of consumers, producers, processors and distributors on the concept of Halal and its benefits when applied in the broiler industry. This paper used descriptive research design with a series of key informant interviews conducted with the personnel from BAVI and VITARICH on their Halal broiler production and processing practices. The results showed that the broiler processing operations of the two integrators are Halal-certified by Islamic Dawa’h Council of the Philippines (IDCP) and Mindanao Halal Authority (MINHA), and are following the Halal practices specified by the Halal certifiers. However, the broiler production operations of BAVI and VITARICH are not certified Halal but, to maintain Halal integrity of the broilers, they do not feed the animals porcine meals or feeds with pork ingredients. The lack of a unified Halal certifying body and Halal practices, and the questionable Halal credibility of broiler chicken pose the biggest concern for the Halal broiler processing industry. The limited availability, higher price and possible sources of contamination of Halal feeds were critical issues for the industry along with the limited infrastructure/facilities for Halal broiler slaughtering. It was recommended that a unification of Halal certifying organizations and standards and proper support infrastructure be established and made a priority.

      • LEAN WASTE MINIMIZATION FOR GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS: THE CASE OF A PLASTIC MANUFACTURING COMPANY IN THE PHILIPPINES

        Gonver S. Valencia,Mar B. Cruz,Dinah Pura T. Depositario,Nanette A. Aquino 한국무역학회 2019 한국무역학회 국제학술대회 Vol.2019 No.08

The study determined the most common lean waste of GMND-AB Operations Department and developed recommendations on how to minimize these wastes. The operational lean wastes were identified and classified by consolidating all the available data of the firm and through actual onsite verification. Gathered data were verified using key informant interviews and onsite process audits. Value Stream Mapping in the form of a workshop was also utilized to identify the lean waste. There were seven identified lean wastes in the operations namely: cavitation losses and broken moulds, non-conforming products or spoilages, waiting for approvals, waiting for process adjustment, waiting for color change over and waiting for equipment. A total of 70 million equivalent caps which equates to 35 Million pesos were lost due to these lean waste in 2018 operation alone. The study recommended lean strategies such as new equipment and process acquisition, total preventive maintenance (TPM), shop floor organization, work standardization, set up reduction and competitive benchmarking to minimize the impact of the identified waste in the operation.
