        Surgical Results of the Superior Vena Cava Intimal Layer-Only Suture Technique in Heart Transplantation

        Background: Superior vena cava (SVC) stenosis during follow-up is a major concern after heart transplantation, and many technical modifications have been introduced. We analyzed the surgical results of the SVC intima layer-only suture technique in heart transplantation. Methods: We performed SVC anastomosis with sutures placed only in the intima during heart transplantation. We measured the area of the SVC at 3 different points (above the anastomosis, at the anastomosis, and below the anastomosis) in an axial view by freely drawing regions of interest, and then evaluated the degree of stenosis. Patients who underwent cardiac computed tomography (CT) at 2 years postoperatively between June 2017 and May 2020 were included in this study. Results: We performed heart transplantation in 41 patients. Among them, 24 patients (16 males and 8 females) underwent follow-up cardiac CT at 2 years postoperatively. The mean age at operation was 49.4±4.9 years. The diagnoses at time of operation were dilated cardiomyopathy (n=12), ischemic heart disease (n=8), valvular heart disease (n=2), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (n=1), and congenital heart disease (n=1). No cases of postoperative bleeding requiring intervention occurred. The mean CT follow-up duration was 1.9±0.7 years. At follow-up, the mean areas at the 3 key points were 2.7±0.8 cm2, 2.7±0.8 cm2, and 2.7±1.0 cm2 (p=0.996). There were no SVC stenosis-related symptoms during follow-up. Conclusion: The suture technique using only the SVC intimal layer is a safe and effective method for use in heart transplantation.

        Effectiveness of a combined obesity prevention program in South Korea for children from low-income families that included primary caregiver participation

        Purpose: Obesity among children from low-income families is becoming a social problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an obesity prevention program that included physical activity, nutrition education, behavioral modification, and primary caregiver participation components among children from low-income families. Methods: The study analyzed a nonequivalent control group using a pretest-posttest design. A total of 77 children were recruited from six community childcare centers using purposive sampling. For the intervention group (n=40), the pretest was administered before the combined intervention program involving the participants' primary caregivers was conducted for 8 weeks. The posttest was conducted immediately after the program and again four weeks after the program. Results: Flexibility (F=4.64, p=.020), muscular endurance (F=11.22, p<.001), nutritional knowledge scores (F=4.79, p=.010), body image satisfaction scores (F=4.74, p=.012), and self-esteem scores (F=3.81, p=.029) showed significant differences and interactions between group and time for the intervention and control groups. Conclusion: Strategies to actively engage the primary caregivers of low-income families in children's obesity programs are needed. Obesity prevention programs for children based on the program in this study should be routinely developed, and continuing attention should be given to children from low-income families.

        Development of Marker-free TaGlu-Ax1 Transgenic Rice Harboring a Wheat High-molecular-weight Glutenin Subunit (HMW-GS) Protein

        밀의 고분자 글루테닌 서브유닛[high molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS)]은 밀가루의 성질을 결정하는데 가장 중요한 요소이며 가공적성을 나타내는데 중요한 역할을 수행한다. 우리는 Agrobacterium 동시 형질전환법을 이용하여 한국 밀 품종인 ‘조경’으로부터 밀 HMW-GS을 암호화하는 TaGlu-Ax1 유전자를 가지는 marker-free 형질전환 벼를 생산하였다. TaGlu-Ax1 유전자의 종자 특이적 발현을 위하여 밀에서 존재하는 TaGlu-Bx7 유전자의 자체 프로모터를 벡터 내에 삽입하였다. 동시 접종을 위해서 오직 TaGlu-Ax1 유전자와 hygromycin phosphotransferase II (HPTII) 저항성 유전자만으로 구성된 두 종류의 발현 카세트를 독립적으로 Agrobacterium EHA105에 도입하였고, TaGlu-Ax1와 HPTII가 도입된 각각의 EHA105 Agrobacterium을 3:1 비율로 혼합하여 벼캘러스에 접종하였다. 210개의 HPTII 저항성 형질전환체 중에서 벼 게놈에 TaGlu-Ax1과 HPTII가 모두 삽입된 20개의 형질전환 라인을 획득하였다. TaGlu-Ax1와 HPTII가 벼 게놈에 도입된 것을 Southern blot을 통해서 다시 확인하였다. 형질전환 벼 T1 세대의 종자에서 밀 TaGlu-Ax1 유전자가 전사와 번역되어 오직 TaGlu-Ax1만을 가지는 marker-free 식물체를 T1세대에서 성공적으로 선발할 수 있었다. TaGlu-Ax1 유전자가 발현되는 marker-free 형질전환 식물체는 야생형(wild type)과의 표현형 차이는 없었다. 형질전환 벼의 쌀가루의 제빵적성을 비교하였을 때 TaGlu-Ax1 유전자만이 발현되어서는 제빵적성이 더 나아지지 않았다. 그러므로 더 많은 밀 고분자 및 저분자 글루테닌, 글리아딘의 유전자의 집적과 조합이 쌀가루 가공적성을 증진시키는데 필요하다. 결론적으로 TaGlu-Ax1 marker-free 형질전환 벼는 쌀가루 가공적성을 증진시키는데 좋은 재료로 사용될 것이다. High-molecular-weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GSs) are extremely important determinants of the functional properties of wheat dough. Transgenic rice plants containing a wheat TaGlu-Ax1 gene encoding a HMG-GS were produced from the Korean wheat cultivar ‘Jokyeong’ and used to enhance the bread-making quality of rice dough using the Agrobacterium-mediated co-transformation method. Two expression cassettes with separate DNA fragments containing only TaGlu-Ax1 and hygromycin phosphotransferase II (HPTII) resistance genes were introduced separately into the Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA105 strain for co-infection. Rice calli were infected with each EHA105 strain harboring TaGlu-Ax1 or HPTII at a 3:1 ratio of TaGlu-Ax1 and HPTII. Among 210 hygromycin-resistant T0 plants, 20 transgenic lines harboring both the TaGlu-Ax1 and HPTII genes in the rice genome were obtained. The integration of the TaGlu-Ax1 gene into the rice genome was reconfirmed by Southern blot analysis. The transcripts and proteins of the wheat TaGlu-Ax1 were stably expressed in rice T1 seeds. Finally, the marker-free plants harboring only the TaGlu-Ax1 gene were successfully screened in the T1 generation. There were no morphological differences between the wild-type and marker-free transgenic plants. The quality of only one HMW-GS (TaGlu-Ax1) was unsuitable for bread making using transgenic rice dough. Greater numbers and combinations of HMW and LMW-GSs and gliadins of wheat are required to further improve the processing qualities of rice dough. TaGlu-Ax1 marker-free transgenic plants could provide good materials to make transgenic rice with improved bread-making qualities.

        Positivity of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies among Korean Healthy Healthcare Workers 1 and 2 Weeks after Second Dose of Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccination

        The antibody titer of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was observed in 289 healthy healthcare workers who had completed the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine. Antibody tests were performed using both the automated electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) and the chromatographic lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). All subjects had antibodies against the receptor binding domain of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 only one week after completing the vaccination, and the antibody titer became significantly higher after another week (P < 0.001). Since there was a large amount of antibody formation within two weeks after completion of vaccination, the less sensitive method, LFIA, also showed high sensitivity. There was no significant difference between whole blood and serum in detecting SARS-CoV-2 antibodies after vaccination. This is an early study of vaccinations among Koreans and is expected to contribute to the establishment of national guidelines on COVID-19 vaccination.

        21세기 문화예술기관과 전문인력양성 교육

        화이트큐브 시대를 관통하며 강화된 전문성으로 인한 대중과의 유리도 경험한 바 있지만, 최근 미술관과 같은 문화예술기관은 한편으로는 기관의 본질적 기능 강화와 더불어 다른 한편으로는 대중과 함께하려는 노력들을 다각화하는 추세이다. 이 글은 이와 같은 시대적 상황에서 기관의 독자적 기원만큼이나 다양한 교육을 실천하는 21세기 문화예술기관의 실제 교육 사례로 국립아시아문화전당의 전시 테크니션이라는‘ 전문인력양성’ 분야를 고찰하고 있다. 문화전당의 전문인력은 문화예술기관 및 문화예술교육에 대한 정부 정책과도 맞닿아 있다. 2016년 7월부터 실시된 전시 테크니션 전문인력 양성분야는 미술관을 비롯한 문화예술기관의 전시 관련 전문인력의 필요성이 제기됨에 따라 설계된 특별한 교육이다. 실제 교육과정은 기초과정과 심화과정, 현장실무로 나누어 진행되며, 전시 역사의 흐름을 비롯해 기획에 관한 이론적 이해를 기초로 전기, 조명, 공구 사용법, 프로젝터 설치, 맵핑, 음향 등의 실무과정을 내용으로 한다. 전시 테크니션 교육은 동시대 미술 현장에 점점 더 필요한 수요를 염두에 둔 것이다. 예술적 표현과 기술적 구동의 예술 현장에서 전시 테크니션의 역할이 점점 중요해지고 있고 서구와 일본의 경우 예술가만큼이나 확고한 입지가 있다. 이 전문인력은 전시 현장에서 반드시 필요한 존재로서 체계적인 교육과 개인적 노하우 등을 축적하여 예술가와 동반 성장하는 전문 직종으로 이를 통해 동시대 문화예술기관의 다양한 교육 가운데 전문인력양성에 대한 인식 재고를 목적으로 한다. Recently, cultural and arts institutions like the museum are strengthening the essential functions of the institution and, on the other hand, diversifying. This study focuses on the Asia Culture Center (ACC)’s the education program in the field of training and culture and art institutions in the 21st century. The education program for professional training of the Cultural Center of Korea is in fact in line with the policy direction in which cultural and art institutions and cultural and arts education are expanding, and the first thing they noticed was ‘exhibition technician.’ The field of training experts for exhibition technology, which took place in July 2016, is a special education designed for the necessity of specialized personnel related to exhibitions at cultural and art institutes. The actual course of education is divided into basic and intensive courses and field activities, and the contents of the project are based on theoretical understanding of the history of war as well as the contents of the plan, installation of the projector, mapping, etc. This kind of exhibition technician program is aimed at increasing demand for contemporary art. Their roles are becoming increasingly important in the reality of many artistic sites of artistic expression and technical drive, and in Western and Japanese cases, their positions are becoming as firm as artists.

      • Tonsil-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Differentiate into a Schwann Cell Phenotype and Promote Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

        <P>Schwann cells (SCs), which produce neurotropic factors and adhesive molecules, have been reported previously to contribute to structural support and guidance during axonal regeneration; therefore, they are potentially a crucial target in the restoration of injured nervous tissues. Autologous SC transplantation has been performed and has shown promising clinical results for treating nerve injuries and donor site morbidity, and insufficient production of the cells have been considered as a major issue. Here, we performed differentiation of tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells (T-MSCs) into SC-like cells (T-MSC-SCs), to evaluate T-MSC-SCs as an alternative to SCs. Using SC markers such as <I>CAD19</I>, <I>GFAP</I>, <I>MBP</I>, <I>NGFR</I>, <I>S100B</I>, and <I>KROX20</I> during quantitative real-time PCR we detected the upregulation of <I>NGFR</I>, <I>S100B</I>, and <I>KROX20</I> and the downregulation of <I>CAD19</I> and <I>MBP</I> at the fully differentiated stage. Furthermore, we found myelination of axons when differentiated SCs were cocultured with mouse dorsal root ganglion neurons. The application of T-MSC-SCs to a mouse model of sciatic nerve injury produced marked improvements in gait and promoted regeneration of damaged nerves. Thus, the transplantation of human T-MSCs might be suitable for assisting in peripheral nerve regeneration.</P>

        Musculoskeletal Health of the Adults Over 50 Years of Age in Relation to Antioxidant Vitamin Intakes

        As the proportion of the elderly population increases rapidly, interest in musculoskeletal health is also emerging. Here, we investigated how antioxidant vitamin intake and musculoskeletal health are related. Adults aged 50 to 80 years with a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5 to 27.0 kg/m2 were included. Bone mineral density (BMD), lean mass (LM), appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and the grip strength and knee extension using hand dynamometer. Nutrient intakes were measured using a 24-hour recall questionnaire. A total of 153 adults (44 men and 109 women) participated in this study. A partial correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship between vitamin E and BMD and between vitamin C and LM/Height. Participants were classified into three groups according to whether their vitamin E and C intake met the recommended intake for Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans (KDRIs). The prevalence of having low T-score (< −1.0) and low ASMI (< 7.0 for men and < 5.4 for women) was 51.3% and 15.4% in the group with vitamins C and E intakes below KDRIs. After adjusting for sex, smoking status and energy, protein, vitamin D, and calcium intake, the group with vitamins C and E both below the KDRIs displayed a significantly lower BMD at all test sites and LM/Height compared with vitamin C and/or E intake above the KDRIs groups. We conclude that sufficient intake of vitamin E and C is important for maintaining BMD and lean mass in Korean adults over 50 years of age.

        근대성의 사유와 사물의 전위(轉位)

        This study is a challenge to keep Modeon Geol’s track of modern sense as things and consciousnes in colonial Korea. It doesn’t discuss to ‘Modernity without the assumption that the reason for the rolling-trans of the modern world and things. And It seek to Korean method and thought of modern culture as city as Kyeongsung(Seoul) in 1930s through the symbol of Modeon Geol. The awareness of modernity and the modern sense of the embodied process through a series of circumstances had been stimulated by the substance, rather than reason. Above all, this paper is not a bar to party dealing with modernity, it focuses on that subject and object recognition to modernity. So, first I examines the ambivalent sentiment of modern and Modeon Geol as performative subjects of the modern landscapein colonial Korea. Then it focus to Modan Girl’s two spaces, namely, a modern things Space-department store and a modern cultural space-coffee shop(Dabang)’ Cafe. Through material culture and modern sense of Modeon Geol, this paper wants to be read as one of the grounds for our contemporaries.

        Latilactobacillus sakei WIKIM31 Decelerates Weight Gain in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese Mice by Modulating Lipid Metabolism and Suppressing Inflammation

        Obesity and related metabolic diseases are major problems worldwide. Some probiotics are currently considered potential therapeutic strategies for obesity. We aimed to investigate the anti-obesity efficacy of Latilactobacillus sakei WIKIM31 in obese mice induced by a high fat diet. The administration of a high-fat diet with L. sakei WIKIM31 reduced body weight gain, epididymal fat mass, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in the blood, and remarkably decreased the expression of lipogenesis-related genes in the epididymal adipose tissue and liver. Interestingly, intake of L. sakei WIKIM31 improved gut barrier function by increasing the gene expression of tight junction proteins and suppressing the inflammatory responses. Additionally, L. sakei WIKIM31 enhanced the production of short-chain fatty acids, such as butyrate and propionate, in the intestinal tract. These results showed that L. sakei WIKIM31 can be used as a potential therapeutic probiotic for obesity.
