The Effect of Entrepreneurial Orientation, Market Orientation and Gender on Business Performance

        Md,Atikur RAHAMAN,Kaniz Fatema LUNA,Shi MITE,Monwarul ISLAM,H,M,Atif WAFIK 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.6

The implications of both entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and market orientation (MO) have been very critical in grasping business performance in terms of SMEs. Still, the research application of EO and MO on performance is not very abundant in a developing country perspective. Also, past studies did not take into account gender difference in understanding the performance of SME business in light of EO and MO. The research has been undertaken in Dhaka city, Bangladesh, as there is a number of SME businesses currently developing, which are expected to contribute to the economic progress by generating new employment and more opportunities. Hence, the ultimate objectives of the study are to examine the impact of EO and MO on performance of SMEs, along considering gender difference. 233 SME entrepreneurs responded to this study as survey respondents, followed non-probability sampling measure (n = 233). For analysis, SPSS software is used, through which correlation, regression, and ANOVA analysis were run. Results reveal that both EO and MO were strong predictors of SME performance, while no gender difference was noticed among EO and MO. Also, study findings suggest that enhancing and implementing EO and MO will heighten business performance of SMEs in Bangladesh context.

Do Risk-Taking, Innovativeness, and Proactivity Affect Business Performance of SMEs? A Case Study in Bangladesh

Md,Atikur RAHAMAN,Kaniz Fatema LUNA,Zhao Lin PING,Mohammad Saiyedul ISLAM,Md. Mobarak KARIM 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.5

In the current technology-driven era, Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been deemed as one of the leading and prominent drivers of sustainable economic progress in emerging and developing economies such as in the Bangladesh context. Hence, it is of significance to understand what might fuel accelerating performance of SME business as increased SME performance will bring about more sustainability and strong development of SME sector within the country, through which more employment is anticipated to be generated. Therefore, the current study examines the impact of three factors: risk-taking, innovativeness, and proactiveness on SME performance in Bangladesh. The study has gathered data from SME entities in Dhaka city of Bangladesh, by applying a non-probability sampling strategy. 250 SME owners were contacted to act as respondents and finally, 180 SME owners fully completed the survey questionnaire, indicating that the final sample size is n=180. SPSS is used as a purpose of testing the hypotheses by considering a 5% significance level as acceptance criteria of the hypothesis. Hierarchical regression analysis was run to understand the impact of control variables and independent variables on SME performance and found that age of business, risk-taking, innovativeness, and proactiveness have an important impact on SME performance in Bangladesh.

      • The Impact of Foreign Remittances on Household Income and Poverty: Empirical Evidence from Bangladesh

Md,Rubel Islam 경희대학교 국제학연구원 2021 Asian Journal of International Studies (AJIS) Vol.26 No.1

The study explores the empirical impact of foreign remittances on Bangladesh s household income and poverty indicators using the most recent wave of nationally representative household income expenditure survey (HIES)-2016 dataset. The goal of this study is to fill a vacuum in the empirical evidence on overseas remittances in Bangladesh. Using a two-stage Heckman selection model to account for selection bias and endogeneity caused by prospective migrants self-selection, the study finds that remittances boost household income and reduce poverty regardless of the measures employed. I find that in Bangladesh, overseas migration and remittances generate many of the expected positive outcomes for migrant-sending households. The evidence of the study suggests that boosting migration and remittances requires enhancing the level of education and skill of expatriate aspirants along with easily accessible financing for the rural poor, particularly farming households so that more people from poorer sections can participate.

The Impact of Intellectual Capital Disclosure on Firm Performance: Empirical Evidence from Pharmaceutical and Chemical Industry of Bangladesh

RAHMAN, Md. Musfiqur,SOBHAN, Raihan,ISLAM, Md. Shafiqul Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.2

The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of intellectual capital disclosure (ICD) on firm performance in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry of Bangladesh. In this study, 21 listed pharmaceutical and chemical companies have been selected as sample for 2016 and 2017. This study used the intellectual capital disclosure index developed by Rahman, Sobhan, and Islam. Return on assets and return on equity have been used as the proxy variable of firm performance. In this study, content analysis is performed to assess the level of disclosure regarding intellectual capital and pooled cross-sectional analysis is used to assess the relationship between ICD and firm performance. The study has found a positive and significant relationship between ICD and firm performance. Besides, an in-depth analysis of this study shows that all the components of ICD namely internal capital disclosure, external capital disclosure, and human capital disclosure are also positively and significantly associated with firm performance. The study suggests the development of an intellectual capital disclosure framework by the regulatory authority for mandatory compliance. This will improve the quality and quantity of ICD in the annual reports. Besides, firms should more emphasize on ICD which will help to improve their performance.

Political Islam in South Asia: A critical appraisal of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami

Islam Md Nazrul 한국외국어대학교 국제지역연구센터 2021 International Area Studies Review Vol.24 No.4

The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (BJI) is the largest Islamist Party in Bangladesh. It was founded in 1941 in British-India, by Maulana Mawdudi, a prominent South Asian Islamist leader. The BJI has undergone political vicissitudes during its eight-decade-long political history. The most notable political success of the Party was to have a couple of cabinet positions as a coalition partner in the Nationalist–Islamist Government between 2001 and 2006. Since the beginning of the 2010s, the Party has been in severe crisis: most of its national leaders were convicted of war crimes and put to death in the period 2011–2016. This article aims to examine the BJI’s growth and development and role in political Islam in Bangladesh. It also explores the challenges to, and responses of, the Party and their sociopolitical implications for the future of political Islam in Bangladesh. The methodology of the article is a critical analysis based on an exhaustive review of published secondary literature about the Party. The author argues that the BJI has generated a massive Islamic movement and made an enormous contribution to political Islam in Bangladesh. Yet it has failed to reform its almost-century-old organizational structure and modus operandi and effectively respond to the changed social and political contexts of Bangladesh, which has affected its organizational mobility and success.

      • CO2 Emission, Energy Consumption and Economic Development: A Case of Bangladesh

        Md. Zahidul Islam,Zaima Ahmed,Md. Khaled Saifullah,Syed Nayeemul Huda,Shamil M. Al-Islam 한국유통과학회 2017 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.4 No.4

Environmental awareness and its relation to the development of economy has garnered increased attention in recent years. Researchers, over the years, have argued that sustainable development warrants for minimizing environmental degradation since one depends on the other. This study analyzes the relationship between environmental degradation (carbon emission taken as proxy for degradation), economic growth, total energy consumption and industrial production index growth in Bangladesh from year 1998 to 2013. This study uses Vector Autoregression (VAR) Model and variance decomposition of VAR to analyze the effect of these variables on carbon emission and vice-versa. The findings of VAR model suggest that industrial production and GDP per capita has significant relationship with carbon emission. Further analysis through variance decomposition shows carbon emission has consistent impact on industrial production over time, whereas, industrial production has high impact on emission in the short run which fades in the long run which is consistent with Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. Carbon emission rising along with GDP per capita and at the same time having low impact in the long run on industrial index indicates there may be other sources of pollution introduced with the rise in income of the economy over time.

Isolation and identification of infectious bursal disease virus from broiler and layer chickens during the outbreak year 2007 in Bangladesh

Islam, Md. Taohidul,Mohiuddin, Mohammad,Hossain, Muhammad Tofazzal,Rahman, Md. Bahanur,Rahman, Md. Mostafizur,Rahman, Md. Siddiqur,Song, Hee-Jong,Islam, Md. Alimul The Korean Society of Veterinary Service 2012 韓國家畜衛生學會誌 Vol.35 No.1

The objective of the present study was to isolate and identify infectious bursal disease viruses (IBDVs) from broiler and layer chickens of outbreaks of infectious bursal disease (IBD) in three districts of Bangladesh. A total of 70 bursal samples were collected from dead broiler (n=40) and layer (n=30) chickens showing specific lesions of IBD from seven commercial poultry farms of three different districts (Mymensingh, Chittagong and Tangail) of Bangladesh during the year 2007. Five representative bursal samples from each farm were used for the isolation of IBDVs using 9-day-old embryonated eggs of seronegative flock of layer birds and for identification the samples were subjected to agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGIDT), immunohistochemistry (IHC) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Out of 35 bursal samples, IBDVs were successfully isolated from 28 (80%) samples. By AGIDT, 32 (91.4%) samples were found positive for IBDV antigen. Results of AGIDT clearly indicated that IBDVs detected in 29 bursal samples of six affected farms were identical to each other but not to IBDVs present in the remaining three samples of another farm. Indirect immunoperoxidase staining of the bursal sections revealed the presence of IBDV antigen in 32 (91.4%) samples and the IBDV antigen was detected mainly in the cortex of the lymphoid follicles of the bursal tissues. In histopathology, cell depletion, atrophy and necrosis were observed in many bursal follicles with severe edema of interfollicular septa. Of the 35 bursal samples, 34 (97.1%) samples generated 254 bp product by RT-PCR. In conclusion, the results of virus isolation and identification by AGIDT, IHC and the analysis of viral genome by RT-PCR confirmed the outbreaks of acute IBD in commercial poultry of Bangladesh. Moreover, histopathological findings and results of AGIDT gave a clear indication that the isolates from six outbreaks were different from classical strain and it seems to be of very virulent strain. On the other hand, the isolates from the other outbreak were similar to the classical strain.

Evaluation of anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of Piper sylvaticum (Roxb.) stem by experimental and computational approaches

        Md. Nazim Uddin Chy,Md. Adnan,Akash Kumar Rauniyar,Md. Moksadul Amin,Mohuya Majumder,Md. Sahidul Islam,Shanta Afrin,Kaniz Farhana,Fayejun Nesa,Muazzem Ahmad Sany,Mohammad Akramul Hoque Tanim,Tanvir Iq 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2020 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.20 No.3

Piper sylvaticum Roxb., (Family: Piperaceae), commonly known as pahaari peepal, is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of rheumatic pain, headache, asthma, chronic cough, diarrhea, and wounds. To provide scientific proof for its traditional use, the present study was designed to investigate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory properties of methanol extract of P. sylvaticum stem (MEPSS) in pain models. Additionally, computational studies viz. molecular docking, ADME and toxicological property predictions were performed to identify the potent phytochemicals of this plant for antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities with good oral bioavailability and safety features. Quantitative phytochemical analysis of MEPSS was performed using established protocols. The antinociceptive activity was determined using acetic acid and formalin test in mice at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg while paw edema induced by carrageenan used for anti-inflammatory activity. Molecular docking study was performed by Schrödinger Maestro 10.1 whereas the SwissADME and admetSAR were used for ADME and toxicity prediction respectively. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of MEPSS were 93.39 and 53.74 mg gallic acid and quercetin equivalent/g of extract respectively. The methanol extract exhibited significant and dosedependent antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects in experimental pain models. Also, our docking study showed that piperine, piperlonguminine, and sylvamide have the best binding affinities to cyclooxygenase enzymes with good ADME/T properties. This study confirmed that MEPSS possess significant antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities which could be due to the presence of phytochemicals and three bioactive compounds (piperine, piperlonguminine, and sylvamide) were found to be most effective in computational studies.
