• Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors for Pain Control: Premise and Promise

        Marks, David M,Shah, Manan J,Patkar, Ashwin A,Masand, Prakash S,Park, Geun-Young,Pae, Chi-Un Bentham Science Publishers Ltd. 2009 Current neuropharmacology Vol.7 No.4

The precise mechanisms of pain perception and transmission in the central nervous system have not been fully elucidated. However, extensive data support a role for the monoamine neurotransmitters, serotonin and norepinephrine, in the modulation of pain. Experiments with animal models of pain indicate that noradrenergic interventions, and to a lesser extent serotonergic interventions, reduce pain-related behavior. This is supported by data from clinical trials in humans in which antidepressants have been shown to reduce pain and functional impairment in central and neuropathic pain conditions. These effects are particularly well-studied in trials with serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), which have provided a useful tool in the clinician’s arsenal, particularly considering the limitations of other classes of pain medications such as opioids, anti-inflammatories, and anticonvulsants (i.e., limited efficacy, safety and tolerability issues). Moreover, painful physical symptoms are frequently comorbid with major psychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders. This paper reviewed and summarized the rationale and potential role of SNRIs for the control of pain including clinical and preclinical background. Currently evidence does not definitely support a role of the SNRIs, while limited data propose a putative promise of SNRIs in the treatment of pain related disorders including fibromyalgia and depressed patients with multiple somatic complaints. More researches are warranted to generalize currently available preliminary evidences.

Current advancements of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption and degradation of organic pollutants

        Ul-Islam, M.,Ullah, M. W.,Khan, S.,Manan, S.,Khattak, W. A.,Ahmad, W.,Shah, N.,Park, J. K. Springer Science + Business Media 2017 Environmental Science and Pollution Research Vol.24 No.14

Nanotechnology is a fast-emerging field and has received applications in almost every field of life. Exploration of new synthetic technologies for size and shape control of nanomaterials is getting immense consideration owing to their exceptional properties and applications. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are among the most important group of nanoparticles thanks to their diverse applications in medical, electronic, environmental, and industrial sectors. There have been numerous synthetic routes of MNPs including thermal decomposition, co-precipitation, microemulsion, microwave assisted, chemical vapor deposition, combustion synthesis, and laser pyrolysis synthesis. The synthesized MNPs have been successfully applied in medical fields for therapy, bioimaging, drug delivery, and so on. Among environmental aspects, there has been great intimidation of organic pollutants in air and water. Utilization of various wastes as adsorbents has removed 80 to 99.9% of pollutants from contaminated water. MNPs as adsorbents compared to coarse-grained counterparts have seven times higher capacity in removing water pollutants and degrading organic contaminants. This study is focused to introduce and compile various routes of MNP synthesis together with their significant role in water purifications and degradation of organic compounds. The review has compiled recent investigation, and we hope it will find the interest of researchers dealing with nanoparticles and environmental research.

      • Motion planning for a planar mechanical system with dissipative forces

        Ali, Ahmad,Yaqub, Sheraz,Usman, Muhammad,Zuhaib, Khalil M.,Khan, A. Manan,Lee, Ji-Yeong,Han, Chang-soo Elsevier 2018 Robotics and autonomous systems Vol.107 No.-

Abstract

In this paper, the geometric motion planning problem is addressed for an under-actuated mechanical system with dynamic non-holonomic constraints. Such constraints are the result of conservation of momentum that limits the mobility of the system in ambient space. However, dissipation forces due to interaction with the environment play a role enabling the system to move in constrained directions. Geometric mechanics tools are used to represent system dynamics in a structured form, which help better understand the motion planning problem. The geometric structure can be utilized to choose appropriate gaits intuitively by considering the properties of functions involved in the system dynamics. In a similar manner, dissipation forces also show the same type of geometric properties in terms of Stokes’ connection and Stokes’ Gamma functions. We can choose a gait intuitively without the need for integrating the system dynamics to generate motion in ambient space. We achieve this by exploiting the geometric properties of the friction model along with the natural dynamics of the system. By the proposed gait selection methodology, gaits are devised to move the system along a fiber direction. The simulation results are consistent with the results predicted by the proposed motion planning method. The proposed methodology is validated using experimental demonstration which also supports the simulation results. The proposed Stokes’ Height functions and Stokes’ Gamma functions can help to better understand the contribution of the dissipative forces and their anisotropy in motion of biological snakes and their robotic counterparts.
