        Non-Uniform Constellations for ATSC 3.0

        <P>This paper introduces the concept of a non-uniform constellation (NUC) in contrast to conventional uniform quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations. Such constellations provide additional shaping gain, which allows reception at lower signal-to-noise ratios. ATSC3.0 will be the first major broadcasting standard, which completely uses NUCs due to their outstanding properties. We will consider different kinds of NUCs and describe their performance: 2-D NUCs provide more shaping gain at the cost of higher demapping complexity, while 1-D NUCs allow low-complexity demapping at slightly lower shaping gains. These NUCs are well suited for very large constellations sizes, such as 1k and 4k QAM.</P>

      • Smoking Prevention for Adolescents in Romanian Schools

        This study had two objectives. The first was to assess the frequency and content of school-based anti-smoking education received by Romanian adolescents aged 14-15. Secondly, the study aimed to evaluate to what extent the implementation of a specific 5 lessons smoking prevention program influences the quality of anti-smoking school education among Romanian adolescents. The investigation was performed in twenty schools from Cluj-Napoca, Romania, which were randomly assigned to the control and experimental conditions, resulting in 55 participating classes from the seventh grade (28 in the control group and 27 in the experimental group). The experimental group participated in a school-based smoking prevention program consisting of 5 lessons. The control group beneficiated only in the standard anti-smoking education offered by their schools. Six months after the program implementation, students from both experimental and control groups filled in a questionnaire, assessing several issues regarding their exposure to anti-smoking school education in the last year. The results showed a low exposure to anti-smoking school education among the Romanian adolescents. The implementation of the specific school-based smoking prevention program increased the exposure of Romanian adolescents to a higher number of lessons of smoking prevention and influenced positively the quality of these lessons. The study identified several gaps with respect to anti-smoking education in Romanian schools. It underlines the benefits of the implementation of a school based smoking prevention program with a clear structure, which contains appropriate educational messages and it is easy to implement.

        Tactile Comfort Prediction of Functional Fabrics from Instrumental Data Using Intelligence Systems

        Subjective and objective evaluations of the handle of textile materials are very important to describe its tactile comfort for next-to-skin goods. In this paper, the applicability of artificial neural-network (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) modeling approaches for the prediction of the psychological perceptions of functional fabrics from mechanical properties were investigated. Six distinct functional fabrics were evaluated using human subjects for their tactile score and total hand values (THV) using tactile and comfort-based fabric touch attributes. Then, the measurement ofmechanical properties of the same set of samples using KES-FB was performed. The RMSE values for ANN and ANFIS predictions were 0.014 and 0.0122 and are extremely lower than the variations of the perception scores of 0.644 and 0.85 for ANN and ANFIS, respectively with fewer prediction errors. The observed results indicated that the predicted tactile score and THV are almost very close to the actual output obtained using the human judgment. Fabric objective measurement technology, therefore, provides reliable measurement approaches for functional fabric quality inspection, control, and design specification.
