Background: To find out the leak characteristic of research reactor 'HANARO' building in a typhoon condition Materials and Methods: MELCOR code which normally is used to simulate severe accident behavior in a nuclear power plant was used to simulate the leak rate of air and fission products from reactor hall after the shutdown of the ventilation system of HANARO reactor building. For the simulation, HANARO building was designed by MELCOR code and typhoon condition passed through Daejeon in 2012 was applied. Results and Discussion: It was found that the leak rate is $0.1%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ of air, $0.004%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ of noble gas and $3.7{\times}10^{-5}%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ of aerosol during typhoon passing. The air leak rate of $0.1%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ can be converted into $1.36m^3{\cdot}hr^{-1}$, but the design leak rate in HANARO safety analysis report was considered as $600m^3{\cdot}hr^{-1}$ under the condition of $20m{\cdot}sec^{-1}$ wind speed outside of the building by typhoon. Conclusion: Most of fission products during the maximum hypothesis accident at HANARO reactor will be contained in the reactor hall, so the direct radiation by remained fission products in the reactor hall will be the most important factor in designing emergency preparedness for HANARO reactor.
Stress-Strain Behavior of the Electrospun Thermoplastic Polyurethane Elastomer Fiber Mats
Lee Keunhyung,Lee Bongseok,Kim Chihun,Kim Hakyong,Kim Kwanwoo,Nah Changwoon The Polymer Society of Korea 2005 Macromolecular Research Vol.13 No.5
Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPUe) fiber mats were successfully fabricated by electrospinning method. The TPUe fiber mats were subjected to a series of cycling tensile tests to determine the mechanical behavior. The electrospun TPUe fiber mats showed non-linear elastic and inelastic characteristics which may be due to slippage of crossed fiber (non-bonded or physical bonded structure) and breakage of the electro spun fibers at junctions (point-bonded or chemical bonding structure). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images demonstrated that the point-bonded structures of fiber mats played an important role in the load-bearing component as determined in loading-unloading component tests, which can be considered to have a force of restitution.
Revitalization of Education for Radiological Emergency Preparedness

Employees of nuclear licensees have to take the education for radiological emergency preparedness, as prescribed by presidential Decree. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), as an educational institution designated by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC), has been conducting field-oriented workplace education. This aims to enhance understanding of radiological emergencies that may occur in nuclear facilities and to strengthen response capabilities to prevent and deal with accidents in the event of radiation emergencies or radioactive disasters. To accomplish these educational goals, a paradigm shift from the previous theory-oriented curriculum to a participatory curriculum with high field applicability is needed to strengthen the ability to respond to nuclear or radiological emergencies. In addition, a feedback system is required to manage the quality of education and improve the curriculum. In this regard, KAERI sought ways to revitalize the education to strengthen the emergency response competencies. Based on the concept of the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) methodology, which is recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the development and implementation of education and training for NPP personnel, an educational model and its feedback system were developed. Then, a field-oriented participatory curriculum operation and satisfaction survey were conducted to evaluate the educational effectiveness. Lastly, the survey results were discussed in a critique session to point out weaknesses and indicate areas for improvement, and then were used as data for educational quality assurance. This paper introduces the composition and effectiveness of KAERI’s SAT-based education model based on its recent three years of experience.
