        Machinability Analysis of Heat Treated Ti64, Ti54M and Ti10.2.3 Titanium Alloys

        In this research, machinability of the heat treated α/β (Ti64 and Ti54M) and metastable β (Ti10.2.3) titanium alloys is investigated experimentally. Forces and temperature i.e. life of the cutting tool mainly influenced by variation in cutting speed and feed rate,therefore, the depth of cut was maintained constant while cutting speed and feed were varied. Heat treatment was found to have influence on the machinability of the analyzed alloys. The annealed and solution treated plus over aged samples of the Ti10.2.3 alloy,showed comparatively higher cutting tool temperature and higher cutting forces. This work confirmed the poorer machinability of the Ti10.2.3 alloy than the Ti64 and Ti54M alloys in different heat treatment conditions and this is due to the presence of higher content of β stabilizer elements (V and Fe). It is concluded that the proper heat treatment planning results in better machining performance of the titanium alloys.

        Modelling of the Thermophysical Properties in Ar-He-H<SUB>2</SUB> Thermal Plasmas with Electronic Excitation

        The role of electronically excited states (EES) in the thermophysical properties of a ternary Ar-He-H<SUB>2</SUB> mixture has been examined in the temperature range from 6000 to 40000 K at pressures of p = 0.1, 1.0, and 5.0 atm in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). The influence of electronic excitation was observed to be enhanced with increasing pressure, and for pressures from p = 0.1 to 1.0 atm, the enthalpy, frozen specific heat, total specific heat, electrical conductivity and electron thermal conductivity were enhanced by 1.22%, 30%, 5%, 1.5%, and 2%, respectively, whereas for pressures p = 1.0 to 5.0 atm, the enhancements in these properties were 2.8%, 20%, 6%, 4.5%, and 14.3%, respectively. At higher pressures (p = 5 atm), pronounced contributions to these properties of 11%, 62%, 26%, 18%, and 28%, respectively were noted. Due to the significant contribution of electronic excitation to these properties, considering its influence in modelling plasma processes is important.

        Potential of 2, 2'-dipyridyl diselane as an adjunct to antibiotics to manage cadmium-induced antibiotic resistance in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi Ty2 strain

        One of the reasons for increased antibiotic resistance in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi Ty2 is the influx of heavy metal ions in the sewage, from where the infection is transmitted. Therefore, curbing these selective agents could be one of the strategies to manage the emergence of multidrug resistance in the pathogen. As observed in our earlier study, the present study also confirmed the links between cadmium accumulation and antibiotic resistance in Salmonella. Therefore, the potential of a chemically-synthesised compound 2, 2 -dipyridyl diselane (DPDS) was explored to combat the metal-induced antibiotic resistance. Its metal chelating and antimicrobial properties were evidenced by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and microbroth dilution method. Owing to these properties of DPDS, further, this compound was evaluated for its potential to be used in combination with conventional antibiotics. The data revealed effective synergism at much lower concentrations of both the agents. Thus, it is indicated from the study that the combination of these two agents at their lower effective doses might reduce the chances of emergence of antibiotic resistance, which can be ascribed to the multi-pronged action of the agents.

        Development and pregnancy rates of Camelus dromedarius-cloned embryos derived from in vivo- and in vitro-matured oocytes

        Objective: The present study evaluated the efficiency of embryo development and pregnancy of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) embryos using different source-matured oocytes in Camelus dromedarius. Methods: Camelus dromedarius embryos were produced by SCNT using in vivo- and in vitro- matured oocytes. In vitro embryo developmental capacity of reconstructed embryos was evaluated. To confirm the efficiency of pregnancy and live birth rates, a total of 72 blastocysts using in vitro- matured oocytes transferred into 45 surrogates and 95 blastocysts using in vivo- matured oocytes were transferred into 62 surrogates by transvaginal method. Results: The collected oocytes derived from ovum pick up showed higher maturation potential into metaphase II oocytes than oocytes from the slaughterhouse. The competence of cleavage, and blastocyst were also significantly higher in in vivo- matured oocytes than in vitro- matured oocytes. After embryo transfer, 11 pregnant and 10 live births were confirmed in in vivo- matured oocytes group, and 2 pregnant and 1 live birth were confirmed in in vitro- matured oocytes group. Furthermore, blastocysts produced by in vivo-matured oocytes resulted in significantly higher early pregnancy and live birth rates than in vitromatured oocytes. Conclusion: In this study, SCNT embryos using in vivo- and in vitro-matured camel oocytes were successfully developed, and pregnancy was established in recipient camels. We also confirmed that in vivo-matured oocytes improved the development of embryos and the pregnancy capacity using the blastocyst embryo transfer method.
