Stephen the artist is born with the mission to discover the soul of Ireland, whose national identity has been lost from the lengthy domination of British imperialism and Roman Catholicism. The artist in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is, however, still an adolescent hero, as seen in Stephen Hero, who has just begun his rebellion against the Catholic-mother-Ireland and who has not yet overcome her repetitive self-betrayal in favor of English authority as well as Roman Church. Moreover, in colonial Ireland, exists a third source of oppressive power--the Protestant-Anglo-Irish nationalists, whose claim to Ireland is as fierce as England’s and Rome’s. Although he desires to fly away from colonial Ireland to create her true identity as an Anglo-Roman-Irish hybrid, Stephen the artist is too young and too heroic to grapple with the old treacherous English and Roman crocodiles of the colonial mud. He needs a Bloom.

Heart of Light under Eastern Eyes : The Polish Illusion of the West in The Secret Agent

The Secret Agent, a narrative of anarchists in London, the capital of the British Empire, can be entitled "Heart of Light" as the counterpart of Heart of Darkness, the colonial Congo. The idea of the "light" of the Western civilization or the "West" was invented to disguise the deteriorated reality of imperial Europe in the late 19th century, Yet the illusory idea of the West originates in the East, which either envies or despises it, as revealed from the perspective of the Russian embassy and anarchists in the novel. The illusion of the West is particularly strong in Conrad's Poland, as the Poles have not only been colonized by Russia but have also adopted the culture of Western Europe. The reality of the Western democracy is no different from Eastern autocracy. The West is distinct by its efficiency, which manipulates the reality of the secret hierarchical system into the surface-reality of the liberal and egalitarian society. Necessarily, the English anarchists who confront the superficial reality are "shams." The moments of awakening from the mistaken reality of the West are depicted in the novel as a chain reaction that begins with Verloc the secret agent and continues with his wife Winnie and anarchists. The Secret Agent is distingiushable from Conrad's earlier works because the protagonists have changed from liberal imperial idealists to anarchists revolting against the empire. The possibility of resistance against the dark colonial reality opens.

Two Men in Black at Two Irelands’ Wake - Reviving the Pre-Christian Ireland in Ulysses

Stephen and Bloom, both in black, mourn the death of two different Irelands: the Catholic and the pre-Christian Irelands. The Catholic Ireland has died as Stephen rejects the faith or the church of his dead mother, who represents the Catholic Ireland under English rule. On the other hand, the pre-Christian, pagan Ireland has long been dead since the double colonization of Ireland by the Roman Church and the English. The death of the pagan Ireland is signified by the dead marriage between Bloom, who embodies the mythic lord of Ireland, and Molly, who personifies the goddess of Ireland. Stephen, as the artist of the Catholic Ireland, can neither completely deny the Catholic identity of the country by burying the dead, nor approve the identity by awakening the dead. In contrast, Bloom, the Jewish-Irish ad-canvasser, is capable of viewing the defunct marriage in a new perspective and bringing it to life, that is, reviving the pre-Christian Ireland.

폴란드 태생의 영국작가인 콘라드는 이데올로기적으로 평생 러시아 전제주의의 영향하에 있었다. 콘라드가 일찍이 러시아 치하의 폴란드를 떠나 오랜 세월을 지냈다 할지라도 이데올로기적으로는 결코 어린 시절에 체험한 러시아 전제주의와 그로 인한 조국의 치욕적인 역사로부터 자유로워질 수 없었다. 콘라드는 이러한 조국 폴란드의 역사를 정치적 상황으로서의 이해가 아니라 이를 초월한 실존적인 상황으로 인식하고자 하였다. 즉 러시아 전체주의를 인간의 이성으로는 이해할 수도 없고 통제할 수도 없는 우주의 신비로 이해하고자 한 것이다‘ 콘라드의 초기 소설에서 드러나는 이러한 실존주의적 경향은 1905년 러일전쟁에서 러시아가 일본에게 패함으로써 그 변화를 일으킨다. 이후 드러나는 그의 강한 정치적 성향은 그의 가장 원숙한 작품이라고 할 수 있는 『서구의 시각』에서 그 절정을 이룬다. 이 소설은 『비밀요원』과 함께 콘라드의 이데올로기를 가장 잘 보여준다. 끊임없이 변화하는 콘라드의 이데올로기의 정체를 밝히기 위해서는 이 두 작품을 연결시킬 필요가 있다. 콘라드의 이데올로기는 콘라드가 정신적으로 러시아 치하의 폴란드와 영국 혹은 동구와 서구 중 어느 쪽에 위치하느냐에 따라서 형태를 달리한다. 콘라드는 서구와 동구라는 개념이 이데올로기적 허구에 불과하며 실제로 서로 다르지 않다는 것을 인식하고 있었다. 콘라드는 양쪽의 이데올로기 사이에서 갈등을 겪었으며 이러한 이유로 그의 이데올로기는 끊임없이 변화하며 또한 모호한 형태를 취한다. 『비밀요원』은 서구에 대한 동구의 인식을, 그리고 『서구의 시각』은 동구에 대한 서구의 인식을 드러낸다. 그러나 서로 다른 이 두 인식 너머에는 이 세상 인간의 삶이라는 똑같은 실상이 존재한다. 그 실상은 우주의 신비 속에 가려져 있으며, 그것은 바로 그가 러시아 전제주의라는 형태로 경험한 신비인 것이다.
