This paper reflects on the authors’ experiences conducting educational research in conflict-affected contexts, and the implications it holds for ethical research practices today. Critically examining ethical dilemmas encountered in research in conflict settings, the paper deepens the discussion on research ethics for working in/with participants from conflict-affected contexts. Insights are offered across different stages of a project from design to dissemination. The paper is organized into five sections: an initial section outlining the study background, methodology, and positionality of the authors. This is followed by the theoretical background. Then, six design principles for ethical research in conflict-affected contexts are presented. Next, the principles are illustrated in practice through reflecting on examples from the authors’ recent research in Afghanistan, China/Taiwan, Cyprus, Korea, and Somalia/Somaliland. Before concluding, a discussion and implications are offered. The main contribution of the paper is toward generating dialogue on ethical research practices in conflict zones, emphasizing the importance of contextual flexibility, reflexivity, and reciprocity.

This paper examines the intersections of peace education (PE) and global citizenship education (GCED) as twin educational fields committed to the cultivation of a global culture of peace. The paper is organized in six sections. The first section outlines a brief history and evolution of GCED and PE in the 20th and 21st centuries. It then provides an overview of various contents and methods of peace education for GCED through examining some common normative documents in PE. Next, the paper discusses the influence of various cultural orientations on the different philosophical approaches to PE and GCED. Following this, the paper translates the history, philosophy, and concepts of PE and GCED into practical activities for teachers and teacher-trainers before reviewing four successful cases of PE around the world. The paper then concludes with a discussion of some new pedagogic possibilities emerging for PE and GCED.

The United Nations (UN) is often questioned about its ongoing involvement in matters of peace and security, but its involvement in higher education for peace in the 21st century is rarely examined. This paper investigates the use of higher education as a peacebuilding tool within the UN apparatus. First, I describe the work in which UN universities are engaged. Second, I examine the academic cultural capital that UN officials posses that enable their admission into the UN. i investigate this across UN agencies generally and then in regard to faculty specifically at one United Nations university. Third, I share commentary from scholars I interviewed at this university, and from scholars in Ethiopia and Somaliland, to corroborate and chanllenge the results of the qualifications review, and to elaborate on the education that the UN promotes. Data was analyzed through a Bourdieusian cultural capital framework. The findings point toward social reproduction through academic peace capital in the UN and its university.

Nuclear power plant (NPP) is currently considered as one of the most reliable power sources. However,182 of them are considered decommissioned and inactive including the one in Bataan, Philippines. Theaim of this study was to investigate the acceptance of the reopening of Bataan Nuclear Power Plant(BNPP) by integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior and Protection Motivation Theory. A total of 815Filipinos answered an online questionnaire which consisted of 37 questions. The Structural EquationModeling (SEM) indicated that knowledge towards nuclear power plants was the key factor in determiningpeople's acceptance towards NPP reopening. In addition, knowing the benefits would lead topositive perceived behavioral control (PBC) and attitude towards intention. Results showed that PBC andattitude are mediators towards the acceptance of people regarding the reopening of BNPP. If an individual'sknowledge gravitates towards the perceived risk, then this can lead to the negative acceptanceof the NPP reopening. On the other hand, if an individual's knowledge gravitates towards the perceivedbenefits, then this will lead to positive acceptance. This study is the first study that explored theacceptance of the reopening BNPP. Finally, the study's model construct would also be very beneficial forresearchers, government, and even private sectors worldwide.

The structural and electronic properties of graphene coated on a Cu(111) surface can be strongly influenced by the arrangement of adsorbates at the graphene edges. Oxygen and water intercalation at the graphene edges could lead to oxidation and hydrolysis at the graphene/Cu(111) interface, eventually causing decoupling of graphene from the Cu substrate. However, the reaction pathways for oxygen or water (or both) intercalation at the graphene edges are not well understood at the molecular level. Using ab initio density functional theory calculations, we observed a strong hybridization of pi orbitals at a zigzag edge of a graphene nanoribbon (GNR) on a bare Cu(111) surface, whereas such hybridization was absent for the corresponding armchair edge under otherwise identical conditions. These results indicate that the edge type influences the oxidation chemistry beneath the GNR. Moreover, we demonstrate that the presence of oxygen species, as well as GNR, facilitates the propagation of H2O. The following decoupling mechanisms are discussed: (i) GNRs with armchair edge configurations on Cu(111) can be decoupled via a sequential reaction that involves O-2 dissociation followed by H2O intercalation, whereas (ii) GNRs with zigzag edge configurations on Cu(111) can be decoupled by oxygen intercalation.
