<P> Two components of the neuroendocrine-hormonal response to long-term treatment of acarbose, adipose tissue-derived leptin and central neuropeptide Y (NPY), were investigated in the ICR mice on a high- carbohydrate diet. Acarbose, administered 5 or 50 mg per 100 g diet for four weeks, dose dependently suppressed body weight gain. The body weight gain was reduced along with the amount of daily food intake in 50 mg acarbose-treated group at 7th and 28th day. 5 or 50 mg acarbose treatment administered for four weeks reduced leptin mRNA levels to 62% and 77% of the control group, demonstrating that the amount of leptin mRNA in adipocytes correlates with body weight. As dose of acarbose increased, leptin mRNA level also increased, suggesting that potent inhibition of α-glycosidase by a higher dose of acarbose furthers the enzyme activity and leptin gene consequently. On the other hand, central expression level of NPY gene was increased significantly compared with the control group at the same amount of acarbose administered, reflecting that leptin and NPY operate in a negative-feedback circuit to regulate body fat stores.

[Purpose] This study investigated the correlations among BMD, nutrient intake, basal physical fitness and serum markers in elderly women with osteopenia. [Methods] Bone Mineral Density (BMD) was measured in 54 elderly women (60-77yrs) by using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The subjects were divided into an osteopenia group (OG; n = 29) and a normal group (NG; n = 25). A physical fitness test was conducted to determine muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, agility, and balance. The dietary nutrient intake for one day was analyzed. The serum Ca, Pi and Mg concentration was also analyzed. [Results] There was significant correlation between All subject``s weight and their total-BMD as well as the T-score (p < .01). There was also significant correlation between the fat free mass and Total-BMD (p < .01). There was significant positive correlation between energy intake and dietary carbohydrate with Total-BMD and T-score in the OG (p < .05). The Serum Pi of the OG was significantly lower than that of the NG (p < .05), and there was significant correlation with the BMD in most regions as well as with the Total-BMD and T-score (p < .05, p < .01). [Conclusion] These results suggested that the fat free mass in elderly women plays an important role in maintaining their BMD and that sufficient caloric intake would be likely to improve BMD in elderly women with osteopenia. In addition, the results suggested the possibility of a decrease in bone mass by hypophosphatemia in elderly women.

A yeast strain, CO-2, was isolated as a producer of extracellular protease from a sample of bamboo by-product. The cells were spherical- to ovoid-shaped and 3.7-4.2×4.1-4.8 μm in size. The isolated strain grew at 20-45˚C, in the pH range of 3.0-12.0. Optimal growth conditions were 35˚C and pH of 6.0 for 14 h. The isolate was able to grow in up to 8.0%(w/v) NaCl and 9.0%(v/v) ethanol. Biochemical data obtained using the VITEK system were close to those of Pichia farinosa (exhibiting a 97% matching level). Based on molecular phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rDNA sequences and restriction enzyme analysis of the 18S rDNA-ITS1 region, this strain was identified as P. farinosa. Optimum pH and temperature of the crude protease preparation of P. farinosa CO-2 were pH 3.0 and 40˚C, respectively. The enzyme retained more than 80% of its stability at pH ranging from 3.0 to 8.0. After heating at 60˚C for 1 h, the enzyme exhibited 71% of its original activity.

Three species of the genus Nygolaimus - N. brachyuris (De Man, 1880) Thorne, 1930, N. obtusus Thorne, 1930, and N. parvus Thorne, 1974 - are newly recorded in Korea. These three species are distinguished from their congeners by the following characteristics: short tail, wider body, and weak mural tooth in N. brachyuris; wider lip region, long tail, and long body in N. obtusus; all characteristics (such as body, pharynx, and tail length) are generally smaller in N. parvus. All specimens were collected from freshwater and sediment in Han River. In this study, detailed descriptions and morphometric values of these three species are provided. Additionally, DNA barcode sequence information from the 18S rDNA gene is also provided for molecular species identification.

Adequate nutritional support is crucial in preventing complications and improving outcomes in critically ill patients. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a mode of supportive care for patients with respiratory and/or cardiac failure. ECMO patients frequently exhibit a hypermetabolic state characterized by protein catabolism and insulin resistance, which can lead to malnutrition. Nutritional therapy is a vital component of intensive care, but its optimal administration for ECMO patients is unknown. This case report aims to provide insights into effective nutritional management for critically ill patients undergoing ECMO therapy. The patient was a 72-year-old male with a history of gastric and lung cancer who underwent a lobectomy complicated by bronchopleural fistula, postoperative bleeding, pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The patient's nutritional status was assessed indicating a high risk of malnutrition, using the modified Nutrition Risk in the Critically Ill (mNUTRIC) Score. Nutritional support was administered based on the recommendations of European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), with energy requirements set at 25–30 kcal/kg/d and protein requirements set at 1.2–2.0 g/kg/day. The patient received parenteral nutrition until the enteral nutrition target amount was reached, with zinc supplements for wound healing. The study highlights the need for further research on proactive and effective nutritional support for ECMO patients to improve compliance and prognosis
Mechanism of Organogel Formation from Mixed-Ligand Silver (I) Carboxylates

Ag(I) carboxylate gelators with mixed-ligands were systemically investigated to understand the mechanism of the organic gel formation. The gelators constructed 3-D networks of nanometer-sized thin fibers which facilitated gel formation in various aromatic organic solvents, even at very low concentrations. The loss of reflection peaks in the X-ray diffraction data indicated the reduction of strong interactions between the long alkyl chains as the Ag(I) carboxylates formed gels by maximizing their interactions with the organic solvents. The gelation temperature (T^gel) was measured to explore the interaction between the gelator molecules and solvents depending on their composition and concentration. Based on the gelation phenomena, a dissociation/re-association mechanism was proposed.
