        Investigating the magnetic entropy change in single-phase Y2Fe17 melt-spun ribbons

        The inspection of simplified fabrication and/or processing routes in order to produce materials with attractive magnetocaloric properties is of paramount importance for the development of environmentally friendly magnetic cooling technology. In this work, we have made use of the melt-spinning technique to obtain directly single-phase Y2Fe17 polycrystalline ribbons avoiding any high-temperature annealing for phase consolidation and homogenization. The melt-spun ribbons, with hexagonal Th2Ni17-type crystal structure, exhibit a moderate maximum value of the magnetic entropy change, | DSM peak| ¼ 2.4(4.4) J kg1 K1 under an applied magnetic field change of 2(5) T. Although these values are similar to those for the bulk alloy, the DSM(T) curves are manifestly broader, thus giving rise to an expansion of the working temperature range and the enhancement of about 15% in the refrigerant capacity. We also show that the magnetic field dependence of |DSM peak| at T ¼ TC follows a H2/3 power-law.

        Antibacterial activities of the novel silver nanoparticles biosynthesized using Cordyceps militaris extract

        With the development of aquaculture, there is an urgent demand for an alternative antibacterial agent to reduce the drug resistance and environmental pollution caused by the abuse of antibiotics. Recently, as promising antimicrobial agents, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized via organisms has received much attention. Cordyceps militaris, a valuable edible and medicinal fungus, is rich in a variety of biologically active substances. So, it is of interest to biosynthesis a new antimicrobial agent of AgNPs with the aid of C. militaris. In this study, AgNPs were synthesized using the cell filtrate of C. militaris mycelium as reducing agents. The formation of AgNPs was first confirmed by the surface plasmon resonance illustrated in UVevisible spectrophotometer. X-ray diffraction analysis further confirmed that the AgNPs were composed of highly crystalline Ag. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that most the AgNPs were in spherical shape with mean diameter about 15 nm. Moreover, the synthesized AgNPs exhibited superior antibacterial activities against the all the aquatic as well as clinical pathogenic bacteria. Besides, the prepared AgNPs were proven to be highly stable, even after long-term storage. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that the C. militaris extract could facilitate the synthesis of AgNPs.

        Enhanced ionic conduction of CdI2eAg2CrO4 and Al2O3 composite solid electrolytes

        A series of Al2O3 doped CdI2eAg2CrO4 composite solid electrolytes was prepared and studied by various techniques. XRD pattern and DTA curve show the presence of AgI component formed due to an ion exchange reaction by following the Pearson’s acid base theory. The peaks of XRD and DTA curve became broad after the composite formation. SEM images clarified the presence of multiphase composite. A.C. impedance spectroscopy shows the single semicircle at lower frequency attributed to dominant nature of grain boundary over the grain. The Arrhenius plots of the conductance show a sharp jump at 150 C due to b/a phase transition and it decreases with increase of Al2O3 content due to partial amorphization of the salt. The conductivity of the composite increases with increase of dispersoid (Al2O3) and displayed maximum value (s ¼ 2.49 105 S cm1 at 30 C) for x ¼ 0.3. The value of dielectric constant was increased by increasing temperature owing to increase in mobility and activity of charge carriers, while it shows the decreasing order with respect to frequency.
