Most intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially superoxide anion (O2·-) that is converted from oxygen, are overproduced by excessive electron leakage from the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Intracellular oxidative stress that damages cellular components can contribute to lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes and arteriosclerosis, and age-related diseases such as cancer and neuronal degenerative diseases. We have previously demonstrated that the excessive mitochondrial O2·- production caused by SDHC mutations (G71E in C. elegans, I71E in Drosophila and V69E in mouse) results in premature death in C. elegans and Drosophila, cancer in mouse embryonic fibroblast cells and infertility in transgenic mice. SDHC is a subunit of mitochondrial complex II. In humans, it has been reported that mutations in SDHB, SDHC or SDHD often result in inherited head and neck paragangliomas (PGLs). Recently, we established Tet-mev-1 conditional transgenic mice using our uniquely developed Tet-On/Off system, which equilibrates transgene expression to endogenous levels. These mice experienced mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction that resulted in O2·- overproduction. The mitochondrial oxidative stress caused excessive apoptosis leading to low birth weight and growth retardation in the neonatal developmental phase in Tet-mev-1 mice. Here, we briefly describe the relationships between mitochondrial O2·- and aging phenomena in mev-1 animal models. [BMB reports 2011; 44(5): 298-305]

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a biologically active lysophospholipid that is enriched in blood, controls the trafficking of osteoclast precursors between the circula-tion and bone marrow cavities via G protein-coupled receptors, S1PRs. While S1PR1 mediates chemoattraction toward S1P in bone marrow, where S1P concentration is low, S1PR2 mediates chemorepulsion in blood, where the S1P concentration is high. The regulation of precursor recruitment may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for controlling osteoclast-dependent bone remodeling. Through intravital multiphoton imaging of bone tissues, we reveal that the bidirectional function of S1P temporospatially regulates the migration of osteoclast precursors within intact bone tissues. Imaging technologies have enabled in situ visualization of the behaviors of several players in intact tissues. In addition, intravital microscopy has the potential to be more widely applied to functional analysis and intervention.
Changes in species diversity of ground beetle assemblages in riverbanks of the Yamato River, Japan
Cheol-min Lee,Ishii Minoru 한국응용곤충학회 2010 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2010 No.10
We investigated ground beetles in riverbank of the Yamato River in Nara and Osaka Prefectures,to elucidate changes in the species diversity and assemblage structure.Ground beetles were collected with unbaited pitfall traps once a week from April to December 2006 at five sites; sandy and grassy riverbanks in Ikaruga (Site 1) and Sangoh Towns, Nara Prefecture (Site 2),a gravelly riverbed in a valley in Kashiwara City (Site 3),and sandy and grassy riverbanks with willow trees in Fujiidera (Site 4) and Matsubara Cities,Osaka Prefecture (Site 5). A total of 4,319 individuals belonging to 53 species from two families were captured at the 5 sites. Species richness was the highest at Site 4 (40 spp.), higher at Sites 2, 5 and 1 (31, 30 and 29 spp. respectively), and the lowest at Site 3 (19 spp.). Compared with results in 1988 (Ishii etal., 1996), species richness of both small-and middle-sized specie sand both temperate and northern species increased, and 2 southern species and 2 species endemic to Japan were newly recorded. It should be noted that large numbers of Bembidion lissonotum and Nobria lewisi, "gravel riverspecialists", were caught at Site3. Our results demonstrate that ground-beetle fauna was well maintained in riverbank of the Yamato River in last 18 years.
The Leading Finite Type Coefficients of the Links-Gould Polynomial of a Link
Ishii, Atsushi Department of Mathematics 2010 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.50 No.1
We show that the Links-Gould polynomial of a link has finite type coefficients in a multivariate series expansion, and express the leading coefficients in terms of the linking numbers of a link.
Product Development Based on An Environmental Management System
Ishii, Kazuyoshi,Koitabashi, Masayasu,Mihara, Ichiro Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2004 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.3 No.1
In this paper, the difficulties involved in analyzing and designing a management system for product development are discussed with reference to reducing the impact of products on the environment. We propose some models and methods to analyze information behavior in the process of product development based on a fusion model which integrates the assessments of users’ needs, the environment, and available technology. These models and methods are subsequently applied to the development of a new packaging material. The results of this case study allow us to identify effective information for the design of a management system for product development to reduce the impact of products on the environment.
Two competing soft modes and an unusual phase transition in the stuffed tridymite-type oxideBaAl2O4
Ishii, Y.,Mori, S.,Nakahira, Y.,Moriyoshi, C.,Park, J.,Kim, B. G.,Moriwake, H.,Taniguchi, H.,Kuroiwa, Y. American Physical Society 2016 Physical Review B Vol.93 No.13

We investigated the structural phase transition of BaAl2O4, which has a network structure with corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra, via synchrotron x-ray thermal diffuse scattering measurements and first-principles calculations. BaAl2O4 shows the structural phase transition at T-C = 451.4 K from the P6(3)22 parent crystal structure to the low-temperature superstructure with a cell volume of 2a x 2b x c. This phase transition is unusual, in which two energetically competing phonon modes at M and K points soften simultaneously. When approaching T-C from above, the K-point mode appears first. However, this K-point mode is overcome by the later-developed M-point mode. The thermal diffuse scattering intensities from both modes increase sharply at T-C; therefore, both modes soften simultaneously. The first-principles calculations demonstrate that the M-point mode is electrostatically more preferable than the K-point mode and determines the eventual low-temperature structure, although these two modes are competing energetically. This competition is characteristic of BaAl2O4, which is ascribed to the structurally flexible network structure of this compound.

Improvement of Machinability of PM Steels by Addition of Based Compound
Ishii Yoshinari,Kawase Kinya 한국분말야금학회 2006 한국분말야금학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2006 No.1
We investigated that the effect of based compound on machinability of two types of PM steels. One is a copper steel which is selected as a general PM steel, and the other is a diffusion alloyed steel selected as a high strength PM steel. It is found that based compound addition improves machinability in drilling of both of the PM steels. Although the compound addition degrades the mechanical properties of PM steels, it is considered that decrease of the properties can be compensated by increasing density.
