Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a biologically active lysophospholipid that is enriched in blood, controls the trafficking of osteoclast precursors between the circula-tion and bone marrow cavities via G protein-coupled receptors, S1PRs. While S1PR1 mediates chemoattraction toward S1P in bone marrow, where S1P concentration is low, S1PR2 mediates chemorepulsion in blood, where the S1P concentration is high. The regulation of precursor recruitment may represent a novel therapeutic strategy for controlling osteoclast-dependent bone remodeling. Through intravital multiphoton imaging of bone tissues, we reveal that the bidirectional function of S1P temporospatially regulates the migration of osteoclast precursors within intact bone tissues. Imaging technologies have enabled in situ visualization of the behaviors of several players in intact tissues. In addition, intravital microscopy has the potential to be more widely applied to functional analysis and intervention.

Most intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially superoxide anion (O2·-) that is converted from oxygen, are overproduced by excessive electron leakage from the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Intracellular oxidative stress that damages cellular components can contribute to lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes and arteriosclerosis, and age-related diseases such as cancer and neuronal degenerative diseases. We have previously demonstrated that the excessive mitochondrial O2·- production caused by SDHC mutations (G71E in C. elegans, I71E in Drosophila and V69E in mouse) results in premature death in C. elegans and Drosophila, cancer in mouse embryonic fibroblast cells and infertility in transgenic mice. SDHC is a subunit of mitochondrial complex II. In humans, it has been reported that mutations in SDHB, SDHC or SDHD often result in inherited head and neck paragangliomas (PGLs). Recently, we established Tet-mev-1 conditional transgenic mice using our uniquely developed Tet-On/Off system, which equilibrates transgene expression to endogenous levels. These mice experienced mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction that resulted in O2·- overproduction. The mitochondrial oxidative stress caused excessive apoptosis leading to low birth weight and growth retardation in the neonatal developmental phase in Tet-mev-1 mice. Here, we briefly describe the relationships between mitochondrial O2·- and aging phenomena in mev-1 animal models. [BMB reports 2011; 44(5): 298-305]
Changes in species diversity of ground beetle assemblages in riverbanks of the Yamato River, Japan
Cheol-min Lee,Ishii Minoru 한국응용곤충학회 2010 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2010 No.10
We investigated ground beetles in riverbank of the Yamato River in Nara and Osaka Prefectures,to elucidate changes in the species diversity and assemblage structure.Ground beetles were collected with unbaited pitfall traps once a week from April to December 2006 at five sites; sandy and grassy riverbanks in Ikaruga (Site 1) and Sangoh Towns, Nara Prefecture (Site 2),a gravelly riverbed in a valley in Kashiwara City (Site 3),and sandy and grassy riverbanks with willow trees in Fujiidera (Site 4) and Matsubara Cities,Osaka Prefecture (Site 5). A total of 4,319 individuals belonging to 53 species from two families were captured at the 5 sites. Species richness was the highest at Site 4 (40 spp.), higher at Sites 2, 5 and 1 (31, 30 and 29 spp. respectively), and the lowest at Site 3 (19 spp.). Compared with results in 1988 (Ishii etal., 1996), species richness of both small-and middle-sized specie sand both temperate and northern species increased, and 2 southern species and 2 species endemic to Japan were newly recorded. It should be noted that large numbers of Bembidion lissonotum and Nobria lewisi, "gravel riverspecialists", were caught at Site3. Our results demonstrate that ground-beetle fauna was well maintained in riverbank of the Yamato River in last 18 years.

The decision of which surgical approach to use for the treatment of a multifocal craniofacial abscess is still a controversial matter. A failure to control disease progress in the craniofacial region can potentially put the patient's life at risk. Therefore, understanding the various ways to approach the craniofacial region helps surgeons to obtain satisfactory results in such cases. In this report, we describe a patient who visited the emergency department with a large swelling in his right cheek. A blood test and computed tomography revealed odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. The patient developed sepsis due to a progressive multifocal abscess. An abscess was seen in the temporal muscle, infratemporal fossa, and interorbital region. To control this multifocal abscess, we used the facial dismasking flap (FDF) approach. After debridement using the FDF approach, we succeeded in obtaining sufficient drainage of the abscess, and the patient recovered from sepsis. The advantages of the FDF approach are that it provides a wide surgical field, extending from the parietal region to the mid-facial region, and that it leaves no aesthetically displeasing scars on the face. The FDF approach may be one of the best options to approach multifocal abscesses in the craniofacial region.

Frontotemporal dermoid cysts with a cutaneous sinus tract in the sphenoid bone are rarely found, and furthermore, the spreading of these cysts across the frontal branch of the facial nerve has not been reported. Herein, we present a 5-year-old case of a dermoid cyst successfully resected with preservation of this nerve using a combined extracranial and intracranial approach. This approach is recommended for a safe and radical resection of the lesion and for securing an aesthetic outcome.
The Leading Finite Type Coefficients of the Links-Gould Polynomial of a Link
Ishii, Atsushi Department of Mathematics 2010 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.50 No.1
We show that the Links-Gould polynomial of a link has finite type coefficients in a multivariate series expansion, and express the leading coefficients in terms of the linking numbers of a link.
