장미과에 속하는 배는 배우체 자가 불화합성을 보이며, 이것은 단일 유전자좌의 복대립 유전자에 의하여 제어된다. ‘자수정 1호’는 농촌진흥청 국립특작과학원에서 고품질 중생종 ‘화산’에 ‘92-18-34’(오사이십세기 자식계통, S₄<SUP>sm</SUP>S₄<SUP>sm</SUP>)를 2000년에 교배하여 얻은 계통 중에 자가 결실성 및 과실, 생육 특성 조사를 통해 선발되었다. 만개기는 ‘오사이십세기’와 ‘화산’보다 1일 정도 늦으며 수세는 중, 수자는 반개장형이다. 검은별무늬병(Venturia nashicola)에는 ‘신고’ 정도로 약하고 검은무늬병(Alternaria kikuchiana)에 ‘오사이십세기’ 정도로 약하다. 자가 결실률은 72.7%로 안정된 자가 결실률을 보였다. 만개후 성숙기까지는 147일로 ‘오사이십세기’보다는 7일, ‘화산’보다는 10일 이상 빠르다. 과형은 원편원이고 과피는 황갈색이다. 평균 과중은 308g으로 ‘오사이십세기’보다 크며 당도는 13.9°Brix로 높고 산미가 있어 감산이 조화된 식미가 있으며 과즙은 풍부하고 석세포는 적다. Pear which belongs to the Rosacease family, has a gametophytic self-incompatibility (SI) system and its SI reaction is controlled by a single multi-allelic S-locus. ‘Jasoojung 1’ was selected from a cross between ‘Whasan’, mid-late season major pear cultivar with high fruit quality and SI and ‘92-18-34’ (S₄<SUP>sm</SUP>S₄<SUP>sm</SUP>) obtained from self cross of ‘Osa-nijisseiki’ (S₂S₄<SUP>sm</SUP>) (SM, stylar-part mutant), self-compatible bud mutant that originated from self-incompatible ‘Nijisseiki’ (S₂S₄) made in 2000 at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science of Rural Development Administration in Korea. ‘92-18-34’ was selected as a self-compatible source through field investigation. It bloomed 1 day later than ‘Osa-nijisseiki’ and 2 days earlier than ‘Whasan’ in 2007. It is medium in tree vigor and spreading in tree habit. It is classified as highly susceptible to pear scab (Venturia nashicola) similar to ‘Osa-nijisseiki’ and resistant to black spot (Alternaria kikuchiana). ‘Jasoojung 1’ had 72.7% fruiting rate by self pollination. The average optimum harvest time of ‘Jasoojung 1’ was 147 days after full bloom and it matured over 7 days earlier than ‘Osa-nijisseiki’ and ‘Whasan’. The fruit is roundish oblate in shape and greenish yellow brown in skin color. Average fruit weight was 308 g and soluble solids content was 13.9°Brix. The flesh had abundant juice and negligible grit.

Venturia nashicola에 의해 동양배에 발생하는 검은별무늬병은 국내 배 재배에 가장 큰 피해를 주는 병이다. 이 병에 저항성 품종을 육성하기 위하여 저항성 유전 자원 탐색을 1997~1999년까지 원예연구소 포장 및 인공 접종을 실시하여 저항성친으로 서양배 ‘Bartlett’을 선발하였다. 농촌진흥청 국립원예특작과학원 과수과에서 고품질 중생종 ‘선황’에 ‘Bartlett’을 2000년에 교배하여 저항성 우량 계통인 중간모본 ‘흑성 1호’를 2007년에 선발하였다. 만개일은 4월 25일로 ‘선황’보다 1일 늦고, ‘Bartlett’보다 4일 정도 빠르며 수세는 강하고 수자는 직립형이다. 검은별무늬병에 ‘Bartlett’과 같이 강하고 ‘신고’, ‘원황’, ‘화산’ 등 국내 주요 재배 품종들과 교배 친화성이 있다. 과실은 만개 후 150일경에 성숙되어 양친에 비해 10일 정도 성숙 일수가 길며, 과형은 편원, 과피는 암황갈색이다. 평균과중은 249g, 당도는 13.2°Brix이며 과즙은 중~다이다 석세포가 적고 서양배와 같이 향기가 있으며 동양배의 아삭아삭함이 있다. Scab, caused by fungus Venturia nashicola to Asian pear, is the most devastating pear disease in Korea. ‘Heuksung 1’ was selected from a cross between ‘Sunhwang’, early~mid season Asian variety with long storability and medium susceptibility to pear scab and ‘Bartlett’, early~mid season European variety with highly resistance made in 2000 at the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science of Rural Development Administration in Korea. ‘Bartlett’ with no visual symptoms on any leaves was selected as scab resistant source through field investigation and artificial inoculation test during 1997~1999. ‘Heukseong 1’ blooms 1 day later than ‘Sunhwang’ and 4 days earlier than Bartlett in 2007. It is strong in tree vigor and upright-spreading in tree habit. It is classified as highly resistant to pear scab as ‘Bartlett’. ‘Heuksung 1’ is cross-compatible with parental variety and Korean major pear varieties such as ‘Niitaka’, ‘Wonwhang’ and ‘Whasan’. The average optimum harvest time of ‘Heuksung 1’ was 150 days after full bloom and it matured about 10 days longer than parental varieties. The fruit is oblate in shape and deeply yellowish brown in skin color. Average fruit weight was 249 g and soluble solids content was 13.2°Brix. The flesh had medium to high juice and negligible grit. Its fruit was crisp like Asian pear and aromatic like European pear.

The new variety originated from a cross between ‘Niitaka’ and ‘Chuwhangbae’ in National Horticultural Research Institute, RDA, in 1988 was preliminary selected in 1996 for its high fruit quality, large size with attractive skin color. After regional adaptability test at 9 sites for five years from 1997 to 2001 as ‘Wonkyo Na-31’, it was finally selected in 2001. The principle novel characteristics of the new variety of ‘Hanareum’ is its early maturity and the flesh texture of fresh fruit, which makes the new variety to meet the needs of fruit demands in late summer season, The optimum harvest time is Aug. 20 at Suwon, original bred place in South Korea, five days later than ‘Shinsui’ and ten days earlier than ‘Kosui’. Fruit shape is roundish oblate and skin color is bright yellow brown, which make the new variety distinct from ‘Shinsui’. A mean weight of fruit is 482 g, and soluble solids content is 13.8' Bx. The flesh is soft, very juicy and of negligible grit. Another novel characteristics is the strong resistance to the major pear diseases in Korea, such as black leaf spot (Alternaria kikuchiana Tanaka) and black spot caused by virus. The new variety shows a good cross compatibility with major pear varieties in Korea such as ‘Chojuro’, ‘Gamcheonbae’, ‘Chuwhangbae’ and ‘Mansoo’, while it show cross incompatibility with ‘Whangkeumbae’ and ‘Shinil’.

‘Josengwhangkeum’ pear originated from a cross ‘Niitaka’ × ‘Shinko’ made in 1986 at National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI) of RDA was preliminarily selected as ‘86-1-47’ in 1993 for its high fruit quality with attractive appearance and edible characteristic. It was finally selected in 1998 after regional adaptability test as ‘Wonkyo Na-17’ at 8 sites including Suwon and Naju city for five years from 1994 to 1998. ‘Josengwhangkeum’ of which spur formation occurs more easily than ‘Kosui’ having similar picking time with it, is vigorous in tree growth and upright-spreading in tree habit. It shows no symptoms of black spot caused by Alternaria kikuchiana Tanaka and black leaf spot caused by apple stem grooving virus ‘Capillovirus’. But ‘Josengwhangkeum’ is classified susceptible of scab (Venturia nashicolia). It blooms three days earlier than ‘Kosui’ and one day later than ‘Niitaka’, and produces abundant pollen with cross-compatibility ‘Niitaka’ and ‘Shinko’. Therefore, it can be an useful pollinizer for almost all cultivars to be cultivated in Korea. The optimum harvest time of the fruit is Sept. 8 at Suwon, when showed 8 days earlier than ‘Whangkeumbae’ but 5 days later than ‘Wonwhang’. The fruit is round in shape and yellow green in skin color with lower russet occurrence than ‘Whangkeumbae’. The fruit weight is 410 g and it has 12.8' Bx soluble solids content. The flesh is soft, very juicy and negligible grit.
