Objectives: Little is known regarding the associations between Borg’s rating of perceived exertion (RPE), cardiopulmonary responses, and carrying bags while level walking. We investigated the changes in RPE and cardiopulmonary responses, including energy cost (EC), oxygen consumption (VdotO₂), and heart rate (HR), when walking with a bag. Methods: This randomized crossover study included 10 healthy adults (aged 21–22 years). Four days of experiments were performed at intervals of 1–2 weeks. The participants walked on a level treadmill while carrying a bag with a strap weighting 5 kg, placed diagonally on their shoulders (DS), vertically on their shoulders (VS), vertically in one hand (VH), and on their backs using both shoulders (BS) for 20 min. Walking speed was stable among all experiments, and was set to the participants’ preferred speed. Results: No significant differences between bag carrying methods regarding EC, VdotO₂, and %HRreserve (based on HR) were observed, whereas RPE respiratory (RPE-resp) and RPE leg muscle (RPE-leg) scores varied based on bag carrying method used. RPE-resp score was significantly lower for DS and BS than VH (both p < 0.0083); however, no significant difference was observed when each RPE-leg score was compared. Conclusions: We found that RPE-resp score varied, whereas no changes in EC, VdotO₂, and HR were observed in healthy adults while walking with different bag carrying methods. Additionally, of all bag carrying methods assessed, the highest RPE-resp score was observed when individuals carried a bag with one-hand at their side.

Electronic properties of a new ternary f-electron system RP ₃Al5 (R: rare earth elements) have been investigated. RPt ₃Al5 crystalizes in the CePt ₃Al5-type orthorhombic structure where R atoms form 1-dimensional chains along the b-axis. LaPt ₃Al5 shows superconductivity below 0.4 K, while others show magnetic ordering. CePt ₃Al5 orders antiferromagnetically below TN = 1.2 K with spontaneous moment and shows successive magnetic transition at Tm = 0.9 K. The nearly divalent antiferromagnet EuPt ₃Al5 indicates an unusual valence cross-over behavior into the nearly trivalent state under high pressure of 9 GPa. It is also found that most of RPt ₃Al5 orders antiferromagnetically and, in some cases, shows characteristic features in magnetic suscep- tibility, where the broad maximum appears slightly above TN, reecting the low-dimensional nature.

Objective: Cough is a biological defense mechanism which produces sputum. Difficulties with expelling sputum can occur during decreased coughing ability caused by obesity, which increases the risk of pulmonary complications. We investigated the influence of an 8-week inspiratory muscle training (IMT) program on respiratory function and respiratory muscle strength in the sitting and supine positions of people with obesity. Design: A randomized controlled trial Methods: The participants were Twenty-one men with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2 or more. They were randomized into a control group (CG: n=10) and an IMT group (IMTG: n=11). The threshold IMT was used at a load of 30% of the maximum inspiratory oral pressure in the IMTG; the minimum load of the threshold IMT was used in the CG. Two sets of 15 min a day were performed four times a week for 8 weeks. Respiratory function, respiratory muscle strength, and coughing ability were measured in the sitting and supine positions. Results: Compared to baseline values, vital capacity in the supine position and inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength were significantly increased after 8 weeks in the IMTG, but not in theCG.Coughing ability did not differ significantly between the groups. Conclusion: Eight weeks of IMT enhanced respiratory muscle strength in men with obesity and improved vital capacity in the supine position;however, itdid not improve coughing ability.
