Seismic control response of structures using an ATMD with fuzzy logic controller and PSO method

Hashem Shariatmadar,Hessamoddin Meshkat Razavi 국제구조공학회 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.51 No.4

This study focuses on the application of an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) for controlling the seismic response of an 11-story building. The control action is achieved by combination of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method. FLC is used to handle the uncertain and nonlinear phenomena while PSO is used for optimization of FLC parameters. The FLC system optimized by PSO is called PSFLC. The optimization process of the FLC system has been performed for an 11-story building under the earthquake excitations recommended by International Association of Structural Control (IASC) committee. Minimization of the top floor displacement has been used as the optimization criteria. The results obtained by the PSFLC method are compared with those obtained from ATMD with GFLC system which is proposed by Pourzeynali et al. and non-optimum FLC system. Based on the parameters obtained from PSFLC system, a global controller as PSFLCG is introduced. Performance of the designed PSFLCG has been checked for different disturbances of far-field and near-field ground motions. It is found that the ATMD system, driven by FLC with the help of PSO significantly reduces the peak displacement of the example building. The results show that the PSFLCG decreases the peak displacement of the top floor by about 10%-30% more than that of the FLC system. To show the efficiency and superiority of the adopted optimization method (PSO), a comparison is also made between PSO and GA algorithms in terms of success rate and computational processing time. GA is used by Pourzeynali et al for optimization of the similar system.

Experimental and analytical study of steel slit shear wall

Milad Khatamirad,Hashem Shariatmadar 국제구조공학회 2017 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.24 No.6

A steel slit shear wall has vertical slits and when it is under lateral loads, the section between these slits has double-curvature deformation, and by forming a flexural plastic hinge at the end of the slit, it dissipates the energy on the structure. In this article, Experimental, numerical and analytical analyses are performed to study the effect of slit shape and edge stiffener on the behavior of steel slit shear wall. Seismic behavior of three models with different slit shapes and two models with different edge stiffener shapes are studied and compared. Hysteresis curves, energy dissipation, out of plane buckling, initial stiffness and strength are discussed and studied. The proposed slit shape reduces the initial stiffness, increases the strength and energy dissipation. Also, edge stiffener shape increases the initial stiffness significantly.

Seismic Behavior of High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cement Composites Beam-Column Connection with High Damage Tolerance

Mohammad Hossein Saghafi,Hashem Shariatmadar,Ali Kheyroddin 한국콘크리트학회 2019 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.13 No.1

The purpose of this study is to investigate and evaluate the feasibility of using high-performance fiber-reinforced cement composites (HPFRCC) to satisfy the requirement of transverse reinforcement in beam-column joint under seismic loads. The basic mechanical properties of the HPFRCCs are determined by compression, uniaxial tension, and direct shear tests. Four half-scale exterior beam-column connections are cast and tested under cyclic loads. The cracking patterns, hysteresis behavior, ductility, energy dissipation with damping characteristics and joint shear capacity of the HPFRCC beam-column connections are analyzed, investigated, and compared to the cyclic responses of normal concrete connections designed with/without seismic criteria of ACI. The test results revealed that HPFRCC connections considerably enhances shear and flexural capacity and also improved the deformation and damage tolerance behavior in post-cracking stage comparing to normal concrete connections in ultimate stages. Also, the failure mode of HPFRCC specimens changed from shear mode to flexural mode comparing to the connections without seismic details. Severe damages are observed in normal concrete connection designed without considering seismic criteria. Wide diagonal cracking and damage are observed on the designed NC connections under large cyclic displacement at drift 6%. However, in HPFRCC connections, joint remained intact without any cracks and damage until the test end. This implies that the shear stress requirement can be satisfied without any need to the transverse reinforcement in the HPFRCC joint.

      • Relationships for prediction of backstay effect in tall buildings with core-wall system

        Karimi, Mahdi,Kheyroddin, Ali,Shariatmadar, Hashem Techno-Press 2020 Advances in computational design Vol.5 No.1

One of the prevailing structural systems in high-rise buildings is the core-wall system. On the other hand, the existence of one or more underground stories causes the perimeter below-grade walls with the diaphragm of grade level to constitute of a very stiff box. In this case or a similar situation, during the lateral response of a tall building, underground perimeter walls and diaphragms that provide an increased lateral resistance relative to the core wall may introduce a prying action in the core that is called backstay effect. In this case, a rather great force is generated at the diaphragm of the grade-level, acting in a reverse direction to the lateral force on the core-wall system, and thus typically causes a reverse internal shear. In this research, in addition to review of the results of the preceding studies, an improved relationship is proposed for prediction of backstay force. The new proposed relationship takes into account the effect of foundation flexibility and is presented in a non-dimensional form. Furthermore, a specific range of the backstay force to lateral load ratio has been determined. And finally, it is shown that although all suggested formulas are valid in the elastic domain, yet with some changes in the initial considerations, they can be applied to some certain non-linear problems as well.

      • Comparing type-1, interval and general type-2 fuzzy approach for dealing with uncertainties in active control

Farzaneh Shahabian Moghaddam,Hashem Shariatmadar 국제구조공학회 2023 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.31 No.2

Nowadays fuzzy logic in control applications is a well-recognized alternative, and this is thanks to its inherent advantages. Generalized type-2 fuzzy sets allow for a third dimension to capture higher order uncertainty and therefore offer a very powerful model for uncertainty handling in real world applications. With the recent advances that allowed the performance of general type-2 fuzzy logic controllers to increase, it is now expected to see the widespread of type-2 fuzzy logic controllers to many challenging applications in particular in problems of structural control, that is the case study in this paper. It should be highlighted that this is the first application of general type-2 fuzzy approach in civil structures. In the following, general type-2 fuzzy logic controller (GT2FLC) will be used for active control of a 9-story nonlinear benchmark building. The design of type-1 and interval type-2 fuzzy logic controllers is also considered for the purpose of comparison with the GT2FLC. The performance of the controller is validated through the computer simulation on MATLAB. It is demonstrated that extra design degrees of freedom achieved by GT2FLC, allow a greater potential to better model and handle the uncertainties involved in the nature of earthquakes and control systems. GT2FLC outperforms successfully a control system that uses T1 and IT2 FLCs.

Behavior of exterior concrete beam-column joints reinforced with Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) bars

Hossein Rezaee Azariani,M. Reza Esfahani,Hashem Shariatmadar 국제구조공학회 2018 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.28 No.1

This research was conducted to study the behavior of exterior concrete beam-column joints with reinforced shape memory alloy (SMA) bars tested under cyclic loading. These bars benefit from superelastic behavior and can stand high loads without residual strains. The experimental part of the study, 8 specimens of exterior concrete beam-column joints were made and tested. Two different types of concrete with 30 and 45 MPa were used. Four specimens contained SMA bars and 4 specimens contained steel bars in beam-column joints. Furthermore, different transverse reinforcements were used in beams investigate the effects of concrete confinement. Specimens were tested under cyclic loading. Results show that SMA bars are capable of recentering to their original shape after standing large displacements. Due to the superelastic behavior of SMA bars, cracks at the joint core vanish under cyclic loading. As the cyclic loading increased, bending failure occurred in the beam outside the joint core. In the analytical parts of the study, specimens were simulated using the SeismoStruct software. Experimental and analytical results showed a satisfactory correlation. Plastic hinge length at the beam joint for specimens with SMA and steel bars was calculated by empirical equations, experimental and analytical results. It was shown that Paulay's and Priestley's equations are appropriate for concrete beam-column joints in both types of bars.
