        Calculation of kinetic parameters Beff and with modified open source Monte Carlo code OpenMC(TD)

        This work presents the methodology used to expand the capabilities of the Monte Carlo code OpenMC forthe calculation of reactor kinetic parameters: effective delayed neutron fraction beff and neutron generationtime L. The modified code, OpenMC(Time-Dependent) or OpenMC(TD), was then used tocalculate the effective delayed neutron fraction by using the prompt method, while the neutron generationtime was estimated using the pulsed method, fitting L to the decay of the neutron population. OpenMC(TD) is intended to serve as an alternative for the estimation of kinetic parameters whenlicensed codes are not available. The results obtained are compared to experimental data and MCNPcalculated values for 18 benchmark configurations.

        Citrus Pulp as a Dietary Source of Antioxidants for Lactating Holstein Cows Fed Highly Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Diets

        The effects of feeding pelleted citrus pulp (PCP) as a natural antioxidant source on the performance and milk quality of dairy cows fed highly polyunsaturated fatty acid (FA) diets were evaluated. Four lactating Holstein cows were assigned to a $4{\times}4$ Latinsquare. Treatments, on a dry matter (DM) basis, were i) control diet; ii) 3% soybean oil; iii) 3% soybean oil and 9% PCP and; iv) 3% soybean oil and 18% PCP. When cows fed on citrus pulp, the DM intake tended to decrease. The total tract apparent digestibility of DM and ether extract decreased when cows fed on the control diet compared to other diets. Cows fed PCP had higher polyphenols and flavonoids content and higher total ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in milk compared to those fed no pelleted citrus pulp. Cows fed 18% PCP showed higher monounsaturated FA and lower saturated FA in milk fat compared with cows fed the other diets. The lowest n-6 FA proportion was in milk fat from cows fed control. The present study suggests that pelleted citrus pulp added to 9% to 18% DM increases total polyphenols and flavonoids concentration, and the FRAP in milk.

      • European 1: A globally important clonal complex of Mycobacterium bovis

        We have identified a globally important clonal complex of Mycobacterium bovis by deletion analysis of over one thousand strains from over 30 countries. We initially show that over 99% of the strains of M. bovis, the cause of bovine tuberculosis, isolated from cattle in the Republic of Ireland and the UK are closely related and are members of a single clonal complex marked by the deletion of chromosomal region RDEu1 and we named this clonal complex European 1 (Eu1). Eu1 strains were present at less than 14% of French, Portuguese and Spanish isolates of M. bovis but are rare in other mainland European countries and Iran. However, strains of the Eu1 clonal complex were found at high frequency in former trading partners of the UK (USA, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Canada). The Americas, with the exception of Brazil, are dominated by the Eu1 clonal complex which was at high frequency in Argentina, Chile, Ecuador and Mexico as well as North America. Eu1 was rare or absent in the African countries surveyed except South Africa. A small sample of strains from Taiwan were non-Eu1 but, surprisingly, isolates from Korea and Kazakhstan were members of the Eu1 clonal complex. The simplest explanation for much of the current distribution of the Eu1 clonal complex is that it was spread in infected cattle, such as Herefords, from the UK to former trading partners, although there is evidence of secondary dispersion since. This is the first identification of a globally dispersed clonal complex M. bovis and indicates that much of the current global distribution of this important veterinary pathogen has resulted from relatively recent International trade in cattle.

        BAYESIAN KRIGING REGRESSION FOR THE ACCURACY IMPROVEMENT OF BEAM MODELED T-JUNCTIONS OF BUSES AND COACHES STRUCTURES WITH A METHODOLOGY BASED ON FEM BEHAVIORAL ANALYSIS

        This paper has been developed in the framework of the alternative beam T-junction solution previouslypropoused by the authors (Alcalá et al., 2013), with the scope of optimizing the behavior of buses and coaches upper structuresmodeled with beam type elements. The alternative beam T-junction model proposed by the authors, had a total of six elasticelements at the junction level allowing to modify the localized rigidity of any modeled T-junctions, therefore improving theirbehavior and avoiding the well known rigidity issue these elements have. A fundamental aspect behind the use of thesealternative beam models is related to the necessity of correctly estimating the rigidity values of the elastic elements for eachmodeled T-junction. In this context, we propose applying a surrogate model for the reference calculations which is based onstatistical Bayesian kriging predictors. Statistical predictions have the added value, with respect to deterministic solutions, ofproviding a quantification of uncertainty. The development of the kriging predictors has required the application of a statisticalmethodology including computer experiment design, computation of moments of inertia, graphical and ANOVA typesensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo computation of Bayesian inference. The results of the application have been a verysatisfactory trade-off between accuracy of approximation (prediction) and computational cost. The surrogate kriging modelsalso provide an useful tool for a better understanding of the input-output relationships involved in the reference computations.
