It is very important to control the chunk graphite, dross inclusions and pinholes in pressure tight DCI castings. In this study, it is attempted to obtain sound DCI castings without defects by process control and small anount of special additives. Obtained conclusions are as follow. Chunk graphite can be overcome by small additions of Ce as mishmetal…about 0.01∼0.03% and ruducing the nodule count in ductile iron. One of the best detterrents to pinhole porosity is to treat and pour at sufficiently high temperature so any hydrogen absorbed by iron has a chance to get out before casting solidifies. Te additions of 0.01% of iron are helpful in reducing or elimination the pinholes. A moderately pressurized gyting system having a spure, runner, ingate ratio of approximately 4:8:3 or 2:4:1 has consistently produced quality castings in all size rages.

Inoculation is one of the important treatments in gray cast iron production. In spite of the fact that post inoculation is a treatment that should not be abbreviated, it is often abbreviated in many foundary shops and as the result many kinds of casting defects are occurring. In this study we made and efforts to develop automatic inoculation equipment in order to automatise the conventional manual inoculation. Principal abilities of this equipment are as follow. 1. Total feeds, feeding speed, feeding time, and total running time are indicated on LCD. 2. If feed and time are determined and inputted, speed and running time is calculated and indicated automatically. 3. If speed and time are determined and inputted, feed and running time is calculated and indicated by accumulation. 4. Automatic and munual operation are possible. 5. By the replacement of inoculant feeding disc, the amount of inoculant can be regulated form 1 to 120 gr/sec. 6. N/A It is very important to obtain high performance ductile iron by addition a small amount of alloying elements. In this study, to improve the characteristics of small piston ring tasted from ductile iron melt a small amount of boron(0∼0.008wt.%) that is powerful carbide stabilizer was added in ductile iron, and inspected it`s effects on the microstructure, wear resistance, machinability and mechanical properties. The results obtained from this study are as follows. 1. As the amount of boron increased to 0.04wt.%, the machinability of ductile iron is increased, and if the amount is in excess of 0.04wt.% the machinability is decreased conversely. 2. The wear resistance of ductile iron is improved by boron addition. 3. The recommended ladle addition of boron amount ranges from 0.04wt.% to 0:06wt.% for the use of small piston ring.
