In this work, we report for the first time, the effect of adding ZnO nanoparticles, and NdCl3(6H2O) into solution cast Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films, and the interplay of these two different types of additives giving rise to unique multifunctional properties. Rather than the dominance of a single type of additive, a balanced amount of ZnO and NdCl3(6H2O) enhanced the crystallinity, electroactive phase formation, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the films. These enhanced properties of the film, having the optimum amount of both the additives, have been utilized to fabricate a device capable of harvesting electrical energy from different body movements though the enhanced electroactive nature of the thin film. A very low cost flexible piezoelectric energy harvester has been prepared from the optimized film. The device shows excellent periodic performance under several human body imparted forces like finger tapping, toe pressing etc. The maximum open circuit voltage was obtained to be 5.9 V and short circuit current was obtained to be 0.36 μA resulting in a power density of 0.35 μW/cm2 against periodic human finger tapping. The device has been observed to be sensitive to other body movements and also has been proven to be efficient for extracting power from different body movements.
