        Purification and Characterization of Lipase from the Anaerobic Lipolytic Bacterium Selenomonas lipolytica

        Two different extracellular lipases were produced by an anaerobic bacterium, Selenomonas lipolytica. A major lipase, lipase I, was isolated, which showed optimum activity at pH 6.0 and at 45℃. It showed a molecular weight of 240 kDa and was a tetramer of a subunit having molecular weight of 60 kDa, which is different from the known bacterial lipases.

        DNA barcoding confirmed the occurrence of invasive vegetable leaf miner, Liriomyza sativae Blanchard (Diptera:Agromyzidae) in Northeast India

        The vegetable leaf miner, Liriomyza sativae (Diptera:Agromyzidae), is an invasive polyphagous species originally known to be found in America and now spread in many parts of Africa, Asia, and the Pacific region. During 2016, L. sativae was observed for the first time infesting tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) leaves in experimental farms of an institute at Umiam (Meghalaya state of northeastern India). Based on museum specimens, this species was reported from India on tomato during 1994. Nevertheless, no further information is hitherto available from India apart from just new record. Considering the pest status of L. sativae across the globe, it is crucial to understand its expansion range, severity, biological attributes, and seasonal incidence on tomato in India. Taxonomic identification of different species of Liriomyza leaf miners is very complex due to morphological resemblance, and consequently, species-level identification is often done incorrectly by mistaking one species for another. Therefore, we characterized L. sativae at the molecular level and developed species specific DNA barcodes by using mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase gene. Moreover, the information on the correct distribution, seasonal incidence, and basic biological attributes of different stages of L. sativae is reported and discussed.

        Characterization and thermophysical properties of Zr<sub>0.8</sub>Nd<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>1.9</sub>-MgO composite

        The major drawback of zirconia-based materials, in view of their applications as targets for minor actinide transmutation, is their poor thermal conductivity. The addition of MgO, which has high thermal conductivity, to zirconia-based materials is expected to improve their thermal conductivity. On these grounds, the present study aims at phase characterization and thermophysical property evaluation of neodymium-substituted zirconia (Zr<sub>0.8</sub>Nd<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>1.9</sub>; using Nd<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> as a surrogate for Am<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>) and its composites with MgO. The composite was prepared by a solid-state reaction of Zr<sub>0.8</sub>Nd<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>1.9</sub> (synthesized by gel combustion) and commercial MgO powders at 1773 K. Phase characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction and the microstructural investigation was performed using a scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The linear thermal expansion coefficient of Zr<sub>0.8</sub>Nd<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>1.9</sub> increases upon composite formation with MgO, which is attributed to a higher thermal expansivity of MgO. Similarly, specific heat also increases with the addition of MgO to Zr<sub>0.8</sub>Nd<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>1.9</sub>. Thermal conductivity was calculated from measured thermal diffusivity, temperature-dependent density and specific heat values. Thermal conductivity of Zr<sub>0.8</sub>Nd<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>1.9</sub>-MgO (50 wt%) composite is more than that of typical UO<sub>2</sub> fuel, supporting the potential of Zr<sub>0.8</sub>Nd<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>1.9</sub>-MgO composites as target materials for minor actinides transmutation.

        Cognitive Coaching: Developing Teachers of English as Self-directed Learners

        Innovative and leadership-based learning environments proposed by Education 4.0 have created new tasks for teachers to take greater ownership of change to survive in both digital and physical classrooms. These tasks require teachers to increase their cognitive development and teacher sense of efficacy (TSE). Within this context, teachers as self-directed learners with high levels of sense of efficacy and a more efficient cognitive development are the best agents of change in creating innovative learning opportunities for both themselves and learners as demanded by Education 4.0. This single case study based on pre/post test design aims to examine the impact of a cognitive coaching program developed by the researchers on cognitive and TSE development of pre-service EFL (English as a foreign language) teachers in the Turkish EFL context. Overall, the program had a significant impact on TSE development of teacher candidates and coaching skills concerned with their cognitive development, self-directedness, self-modification, and self-reflection.
