Zinc oxide-tungsten oxide (ZnO-WO3) composite for solar light-assisted degradation of organic dyes

        Aziz Fatima,Warsi Al-Zoha,Somaily Hamoud H.,Din Muhammad Imran,Sabeeh Humera,Warsi Muhammad Farooq,Shakir Imran 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.6

Photocatalytic degradation of dyes is one of the most effective methods that can be utilized for a pollution-free environment. For this purpose, Tungsten oxide (WO3), zinc oxide (ZnO) and their composite WO3/ZnO were synthesized using facile route. X-rays diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed their structural, spectral and morphological features, respectively. These techniques confirmed the formation of desired products. The as-prepared samples were utilized as photocatalysts for the evaluation of the photocatalytic removal of methylene blue and rhodamine B under solar light irradiation. The obtained results showed that the synergistic effect of tungsten oxide and zinc oxide is responsible for the increased charge separation and reduction in recombination chances of charge carriers that enhance the remarkable photocatalytic performance. For methylene blue and rhodamine-b, the percentage degradation was 94% and 85.7%, respectively. Different scavenger studies showed that holes are the major active species responsible for the removal of methylene blue. The EIS and Mott-Schottky plots confirmed the p-type and n-type character of WO3 and ZnO, respectively. Briefly, the as-synthesized nanocomposite showed enhanced photocatalytic behavior for the degradation of various dyes as compared to pristine metal oxides.

Solid household waste characterization and fresh leachate treatment

        Fatima Benyoucef,Abdelhadi Makan,Abderrahman El Ghmari,Aziz Ouatmane 대한환경공학회 2015 Environmental Engineering Research Vol.20 No.4

This study aims to characterize solid household waste and to present physicochemical characteristics of fresh leachate before landfilling in Kasba Tadla city, Morocco. Obtained results show that household waste produced in 2013 were about 11,787 tons, or 0.27 tons/capita/year. These wastes were composed essentially of organic materials (74%), paper (8%), plastics (9%), metals (1%), and glass (0.5%). However, monthly produced leachate ranges from a maximum of 130.92 ㎥ during summer and a minimum of 21.88 ㎥ in winter. Moreover, leachate treatment using Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket technique was accompanied by a decrease in electrical conductivity, certainly related to leachate-sediment chemical exchanges. Otherwise, the same acidity reduction phenomenon occurs when pH value increased from 4.49 to 6.17 after 24 hours, confirming the system response since the early stages of treatment. In addition, temporal evolution of the treatment efficiency in terms of COD highlighted a very important reduction which reached 94% after 5 days with an average temperature of 25℃.

      • Screening for Del 185 AG and 4627C>A BRCA1 Mutations in Breast Cancer Patients from Lahore, Pakistan

Aziz, Faiza,Fatima, Warda,Mahmood, Saqib,Khokher, Samina Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.4

Breast cancer contributes to approximately 23% of the cancer cases identified and 14% of cancer related deaths worldwide. Including a strong association between genetic and environmental factors, breast cancer is a complex and multi factorial disorder. Two high penetration breast cancer susceptibility genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) have been identified, and germ line mutations in these are thought to account for between 5% and 10% of all breast cancer cases. The human BRCA1 gene, located on 17q, is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation by aiding in DNA repair, transcriptional responses to DNA damage and cell cycle check points. Mutations in this gene enhance cell proliferation and facilitate formation of tumors. Two mutations, the 185 deletion of AG and the 4627 substitution from C to A, are founder mutations in the BRCA1 gene for breast cancer in Asian populations. Allele specific PCR was performed to detect these selected mutations in 120 samples. No mutation of 4627 C to A was detected in the samples and only one of the patients had the 185 del AG mutation in the heterozygous condition. Our collected samples had lower consanguinity and family history indicating the greater involvement of environmental as compared to genetic factors.

Solitary Skull Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis Presenting With a Pus Draining Fistula: An Unusual Presentation and Review of Literature

2024 Brain Tumor Research and Treatment Vol.12 No.2

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare condition in adults, especially when it is limited to a single area of the skull, known as solitary calvarial involvement. In this case report, we present a unique instance of LCH affecting the parietal bone with a pus-draining fistula. This is a rare and unusual presentation at this location, which has been scarcely reported in medical literature. A 30-year-old woman with no prior comorbidity presented with complaints of headache that persisted for a year. She also had swelling on her scalp and a yellowish discharge for 3 weeks, but no neurological problems were observed. Radiology revealed thinning of the calvaria, with ragged margins along the inner table, multiple focal erosions, and involvement of overlying soft tissue and bony sequestrum. The patient underwent biparietal craniotomy and excision of the lesion. The histopathology report showed LCH. After 8 months of follow-up, there was no recurrence. The management of solitary calvarial involvement by LCH with masquerading presentation as a scalp infection can be achieved through complete excision of the lesions, resulting in a favorable outcome.

Tungsten oxide-copper oxide supported on reduced graphene oxide as a proficient electrocatalyst with enhanced hydrogen evolution efficiency in an alkaline media

        Katubi Khadijah Mohammedsaleh,Warsi Al-Zoha,Aziz Fatima,Khattak Zafar A.K.,Warsi Muhammad Farooq,Al-Buriahi M.S.,Alrowaili Z. A.,Yousaf Sheraz 한국물리학회 2023 Current Applied Physics Vol.51 No.-

This study focuses on the production of hydrogen through electrocatalysis using a newly synthesized and characterized nano-hybrid composite based electrocatalyst. The electrocatalyst is composed of mixed metal oxides and reduced graphene oxide. The electrocatalysts were evaluated for their structural and morphological characteristics through the implementation of diverse characterization methodologies. The utilization of electrochemical methodologies, including linear sweep voltammetry, Tafel slope, and electrochemical active surface area measurements, provided valuable information regarding the catalytic efficiency and effectiveness of the electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The findings indicate that the electrocatalyst WO3–CuO/ rGO demonstrated exceptional catalytic efficiency, as evidenced by a current density of 200 mA/cm2 at an overpotential of -400 mV, a Tafel slope of 44 mVdec-1, and low charge transfer resistance. Additionally, the chronoamperometric analysis exhibited the electrocatalyst’s durability, highlighting its potential for practical implementations.
