In this present investigation, the potentiality of rice bran oil (RBO) and tridodecylamine (TDDA) to be incorporated as the key constituents in the formulation of new environmentally benign green emulsion liquid membrane (GELM) to extract hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous feed phase was explored. The pertinent constituents of GELM were RBO (70%, v/v) and hexane (30%, v/v) as green and organic diluent, respectively; TDDA (0.75 (%, v/v) of diluent solution) as carrier; emulsifying agent (span 80: 1.75 (%v/v) of diluent solution); and NaOH as internal reagent. The investigation of optimum process conditions for various parameters has resulted in 0.45 pH of aqueous solution, 0.25 [M] internal phase concentration, 2:1 (v/v) treat ratio, 0.40 (v/v) phase ratio, 550 (rpm) agitation speed, 25 (min) extraction time, and 30 ± 2 (°C) feed phase temperature. The highest achievable extraction efficiency (η, %) and dynamic stability (min) of GELM have been obtained as 97 ± 2% and 150 ± 2 min, respectively under these optimum process conditions. The present finding has revealed that RBO as a green diluent has huge capability to be further utilized for the extraction of Cr (VI) from various industrial effluent streams.
Unduly extensive uncinate process of pancreas in conjunction with pancreatico-duodenal fold

Anatomical variations of pancreatic head and uncinate process are rarely encountered in clinical practice. These variations are primarily attributed to the complex development of the pancreas. An unduly enlarged uncinate process of the pancreas overlapping the third part of duodenum was discovered during dissection. This malformation of the pancreatic uncinate process was considered to be due to excessive fusion between the ventral and dorsal buds during embryonic development. On further dissection, an avascular pancreatico-duodenal fold guarding the pancreatico-duodenal recess was observed. The enlarged uncinate process can cause compression of neurovascular structures and also cause compression of adjoining viscera. The pancreatico-duodenal recess becomes a potential site for internal herniation. This case is of particular interest to the gastroenterologists and surgeons performing surgical resections. Precise knowledge of embryogenesis of such pancreatic anomalies is necessary for understanding and thus treating many diseases of the pancreas.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is one of the most serious and iatrogenic complications that can occur during in vitro fertilization treatment. Although the pathogenesis of OHSS is not fully understood, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been recognized as an important mediator of the development of OHSS. Transforming growth factor-beta-1 (TGF-β1) is known to regulate various ovarian functions. However, whether VEGF can be regulated by TGF-β1 in human granulosa cells has not been determined. In addition, the role of TGF-β1 in the pathogenesis of OHSS remains unknown. In the present study, we demonstrate that TGF-β1 stimulates VEGF expression in and secretion from both immortalized human granulosa-lutein (hGL) cells and primary hGL cells. Our results demonstrate that the SMAD2/3, ERK1/2, and p38 MAPK signaling pathways are involved in TGF-β1-induced VEGF expression and secretion. Using a mouse OHSS model, we show that the expression levels of TGF-β1 and VEGF are increased in the ovaries of OHSS mice. Blocking TGF-β1 signaling inhibits the development of OHSS by attenuating VEGF expression. Moreover, clinical results reveal that the protein levels of TGF-β1 and VEGF are increased in the follicular fluid of patients with OHSS, and that the levels of these two proteins in the follicular fluid are positively correlated. The results of this study help to elucidate the mechanisms by which VEGF expression is regulated in hGL cells, which could lead to the development of alternative therapeutic approaches for treating OHSS.
