Monitoring of fracture propagation in brittle materials using acoustic emission techniques-A review

Hamid Reza Nejati,Amin Nazerigivi,Mehrdad Imani,Ali Karrech 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2020 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.25 No.1

During the past decades, the application of acoustic emission techniques (AET) through the diagnosis and monitoring of the fracture process in materials has been attracting considerable attention. AET proved to be operative among the other non-destructive testing methods for various reasons including their practicality and cost-effectiveness. Concrete and rock structures often demand thorough and real-time assessment to predict and prevent their damage nucleation and evolution. This paper presents an overview of the work carried out on the use of AE as a monitoring technique to form a comprehensive insight into its potential application in brittle materials. Reported properties in this study are crack growth behavior, localization, damage evolution, dynamic character and structures monitoring. This literature review provides practicing engineers and researchers with the main AE procedures to follow when examining the possibility of failure in civil/resource structures that rely on brittle materials.

Design of T-shaped tube hydroforming using finite element and artificial neural network modeling

        Fethi Abbassi,Furqan Ahmad,Sana Gulzar,Touhami Belhadj,Ali Karrech,Heung-Soap Choi 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.3

Tube hydroforming (THF) is a frequently used manufacturing method in the industry, especially on automotive and aircraft industries. Compared with other manufacturing processes, THF provides parts with better quality and lower production costs. This paper proposes a design approach to estimate the T-shaped THF parameters, such as counter force, axial feed, and internal pressure, through finite element (FE) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling. A numerical database is built through Taguchi’s L27 orthogonal array of experiments to train the ANN. The micromechanical damage model of Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman is used with an elastoplastic approach to describe the material behavior. This study aims to find the combinations of THF parameters that maximize the bulge ratio and minimize the thinning ratio and wrinkling. The numerical results obtained by the FE model show good correlation with the results predicted by the ANN.

Mechanical and durability properties of self-compacting concrete with blended binders

        T.Y. Xie,M. Elchalakani,M.S. Mohamed Ali,M.H. Dong,A. Karrech,G. Li 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2018 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.22 No.4

Over the past three decades, self-compacting concrete (SCC), which is characterized by its superior rheological properties, has been gradually used in construction industry. It is now recognized that the application of SCC using supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) is highly attractive and promising technology reducing the environmental impact of the construction industry and reducing the higher materials costs. This paper presents an experimental study that investigated the mechanical and durability properties of SCCs manufactured with blended binders including fly ash, slag, and micro-silica. A total of 8 batches of SCCs were manufactured. As series of tests were conducted to establish the rheological properties, compressive strength, and durability properties including the water absorption, water permeability, rapid chloride permeability and initial surface absorption of the SCCs. The influences of the SCC strength grade, blended types and content on the properties of the SCCs are investigated. Unified reactive indices are proposed based on the mix proportion and the chemical composition of the corresponding binders are used to assess the compressive strength and strength development of the SCCs. The results also indicate the differences in the underlying mechanisms to drive the durability properties of the SCC at the different strength grades.
