Effects of contamination by either blood or a hemostatic agent on the shear bond strength of orthodontic buttons

Gungor, Ahmet Yalcin,Alkis, Huseyin,Turkkahraman, Hakan The Korean Association Of Orthodontists 2013 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.43 No.2

Objective: To evaluate the effects of contamination by either blood or a hemostatic agent on the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic buttons. Methods: We used 45 freshly extracted, non-carious, impacted third molars that were divided into 3 groups of 15. Each tooth was etched with 37% phosphoric acid gel for 30 s. Human blood or the blood stopper agent was applied to the tooth surface in groups I and II, respectively. Group III teeth were untreated (controls). Orthodontic buttons were bonded to the teeth using light-curing composite resin. After bonding, the SBS of the button was determined using a Universal testing machine. Any adhesive remaining after debonding was assessed and scored according to the modified adhesive remnant index (ARI). ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey's test was used to determine significant differences in SBS and Fisher's exact test, to determine significant differences in ARI scores among groups. Results: ANOVA indicated a significant difference between groups (p < 0.001). The highest SBS values were measured in group III ($10.73{\pm}0.96$ MPa). The SBS values for teeth in groups I and II were significantly lower than that of group III (p < 0.001). The lowest SBS values were observed in group I teeth ($4.17{\pm}1.11$ MPa) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Contamination of tooth surfaces with either blood or hemostatic agent significantly decreased the SBS of orthodontic buttons. When the contamination risk is high, it is recommended to use the blood stopper agent when bonding orthodontic buttons on impacted teeth.

Facile and Fast Photo-Polymerization of N-Vinyl Caprolactam via UV-C Irradiation

        Habil Uzun,Ahmet Gungor,?smail Kutlugun Akbay,Tonguc Ozdemir 한국고분자학회 2021 폴리머 Vol.45 No.1

Different polymerization techniques of poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) (PNVCL) have been reported including the photo polymerization via ultraviolet (UV). However, photo polymerization of PNVCL via UV-C (wavelength of 254 nm) has not been reported. In this study, N-vinyl caprolactam was polymerized via UV-C irradiation at different time periods. Fouirer transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed that the PNVCL has been successfully synthesized via the photo polymerization method. The optimum conversion time was found as about 70 min and the conversion was found as 71.2%. Gels displayed different swelling behavior at temperatures above and below lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and swelling analysis, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed to investigate the phase change behavior. It was observed that LCST of the synthesized gels occurs between 31 and 35 oC determined by DSC analysis, which is also consistent with DLS and swelling analysis results. In conclusion, a facile and short time period polymerization technique is reported via use of UV-C photo polymerization technique.

      • Association of ABO Blood Group and Risk of Lung Cancer in a Multicenter Study in Turkey

        Urun, Yuksel,Utkan, Gungor,Cangir, Ayten Kayi,Oksuzoglu, Omur Berna,Ozdemir, Nuriye,Oztuna, Derya Gokmen,Kocaman, Gokhan,Coskun, Hasan Senol,Kaplan, Muhammet Ali,Yuksel, Cabir,Demirkazik, Ahmet,Icli, Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.5

Background: The ABO blood groups and Rh factor may affect the risk of lung cancer. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 2,044 lung cancer patients with serologically confirmed ABO/Rh blood group. A group of 3,022,883 healthy blood donors of Turkish Red Crescent was identified as a control group. We compared the distributions of ABO/Rh blood group between them. Results: The median age was 62 years (range: 17-90). There was a clear male predominance (84% vs. 16%). Overall distributions of ABO blood groups were significantly different between patients and controls (p=0.01). There were also significant differences between patients and controls with respect to Rh positive vs. Rh negative (p=0.04) and O vs. non-O (p=0.002). There were no statistically significant differences of blood groups with respect to sex, age, or histology. Conclusions: In the study population, ABO blood types were associated with the lung cancer. Having non-O blood type and Rh-negative feature increased the risk of lung cancer. However, further prospective studies are necessary to define the mechanisms by which ABO blood type may influence the lung cancer risk.

      • ABO and Rh Blood Groups and Risk of Colorectal Adenocarcinoma

        Urun, Yuksel,Ozdemir, Nuriye Yildirim,Utkan, Gungor,Akbulut, Hakan,Savas, Berna,Oksuzoglu, Berna,Oztuna, Derya Gokmen,Dogan, Izzet,Yalcin, Bulent,Senler, Filiz Cay,Onur, Handan,Demirkazik, Ahmet,Zengi Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.12

Background: Previous studies have observed an association between ABO blood group and risk for certain gastrointestinal malignancies, including pancreatic and gastric cancer. However, it is unclear whether there is such an association with colorectal cancer (CRC). In this study, possible relationships between ABO blood groups and Rh factor and KRAS status in patients with CRC were investigated. Materials and Methods: In 1,620 patients with CRC, blood group and Rh factor were examined and compared with the control group of 3,022,883 healthy volunteer blood donors of the Turkish Red Crescent between 2004 and 2011. The relationship of blood groups with wild type K-ras status was also evaluated. Results: Overall distributions of ABO blood groups as well as Rh factor were comparable between patients (45% A, 7.2% AB, 16.4% B, 31.4% O, and 87.2% Rh+) and controls (42.2% A, 7.6% AB, 16.3% B, 33.9% O, and 87.7% Rh+) (p=0.099). However, there were statistically significant difference between patients and controls with respect to O vs. non O blood group (p=0.033) and marginally significant difference for A vs. non-A blood group (p=0.052). Among patients, the median age was 62 (range 17-97), 58.1% were male. There were no statistically significant differences respect to sex and K-ras status. Conclusion: In present study, the ABO/Rh blood groups were statistically significantly associated with the risk of CRC. There were no relationship between K-ras status and ABO blood group and Rh factor. However further studies with larger numbers of patients are needed to establish the role of blood groups and to define t he mechanisms by which ABO blood type affect CRC.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva in a virgin patient with Turner syndrome

        Omer Lutfi Tapisiz,Onur Topcu,Tayfun Gungor,Bulent Ozdal,Levent Sirvan,Ahmet Yesilyurt 대한부인종양학회 2011 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.22 No.3

Two types of gynecologic tumors are commonly described in the Turner syndrome, the first one is gonadoblastoma, which occurs in patients with Y chromosome abnormalities, and the second one is endometrial carcinoma which is mostly related with exogenous estrogen usage. Here, we describe an extremely rare case of squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva in a virgin woman with Turner syndrome. A 35-years old single, virgin woman referred to our Oncology Department with warty, necrotized, exophytic 6-7 cm vulvar mass. She had a history of primary amenorrhea and mosaic Turner syndrome was determined in her karyotype analysis. Biopsy specimen of the vulvar mass revealed squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva, and total vulvectomy with inguinal femoral lymphadenectomy was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful and there has been no recurrence of the disease up to date. Women with Turner syndrome have streak ovaries that produce very low estrogen and the squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva may have developed at an early age with Turner syndrome because of this low estrogen value similar to postmenopausal women. The current case is a special case due to its age of occurrence, virgin and Turner syndrome status.

      • Relationship Between Antimetabolite Toxicity and Pharmacogenetics in Turkish Cancer Patients

        Dogan, Mutlu,Karabulut, Halil G.,Tukun, Ajlan,Demirkazik, Ahmet,Utkan, Gungor,Yalcin, Bulent,Dincol, Dilek,Akbulut, Hakan,Icli, Fikri Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.4

Introduction: Antimetabolites may cause severe toxicity and even toxic death in cancer patients. Our aim was to evaluate the relationship between antimetabolite toxicity and pharmacogenetics in patients with severe clinical toxicity or alanine transaminase (ALT) elevation after fluorouracil (5FU), capecitabine or methotrexate administration. Patients and Methods: Cancer patients with severe antimetabolite toxicity were evaluated for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene C667T, thymidilate synthase (TS) gene 5´UTR variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR), dihydroprymidine dehydrogenase (DPYD) gene IVS14+1G/A, Xeroderma pigmentosum (XPD) gene Lys751Gln and X-ray repair cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) gene Arg399Gln polymorphisms. Results: Eighteen patients were enrolled, with a male/female ratio of 0.8. They had osteosarcoma in methotrexate group (n=7), gastrointestinal malignancies in 5FU group (n=9) and breast cancer in the capecitabine group (n=2). Mucositis and dermatitis occurred in all groups, together with ALT elevation in the methotrexate group and 2 toxic deaths were encountered. DPYD, TS, MTHFR, XPD and XRCC1 gene polymorphism rare allele frequencies were observed to be higher than in the general population. Conclusion: Pharmacogenetics might contribute to tailored therapy.
