Repair of precracked RC rectangular shear beams using CFRP strip technique

Abdul Aziz Abdul Samad,Abang Abdullah Abang Ali,J. Jayaprakash,Ashrabov Anvar Abbasovich 국제구조공학회 2007 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.26 No.4

The exploitation of fibre reinforced polymer composites, as external reinforcement is an evergreen and well-known technique for improving the structural performance of reinforced concrete structures. The demand to use FRP composites in the civil engineering industry is mainly due to its high strength, light weight, and stiffness. This paper exemplifies the shear strength of partially precracked reinforced concrete rectangular beams repaired with externally bonded Bi-Directional Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Fabrics strips. All specimens were cast in the laboratory environment without any internal shear reinforcement. The test parameters were longitudinal tensile reinforcement, shear span to effective depth ratio, spacing of CFRP strips, and orientation of CFRP reinforcement. It mainly focuses on the shear capacity and modes of failure of the CFRP strengthened shear beams. Results have shown that the CFRP repaired beams attained a shear enhancement of 32% and 107.64% greater than the control beams. This study underscores that the CFRP strip technique significantly enhanced the shear capacity of precracked reinforced concrete rectangular beams without any internal shear reinforcement.

      • Zirconium oxide nanotube–Nafion composite as high performance membrane for all vanadium redox flow battery

Aziz, Md. Abdul,Shanmugam, Sangaraju Elsevier 2017 Journal of Power Sources Vol.337 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A high-performance composite membrane for vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) consisting of ZrO2 nanotubes (ZrNT) and perfluorosulfonic acid (Nafion) was fabricated. The VRB operated with a composite (Nafion-ZrNT) membrane showed the improved ion-selectivity (ratio of proton conductivity to permeability), low self-discharge rate, high discharge capacity and high energy efficiency in comparison with a pristine commercial Nafion-117 membrane. The incorporation of zirconium oxide nanotubes in the Nafion matrix exhibits high proton conductivity (95.2 mS cm−1) and high oxidative stability (99.9%). The Nafion-ZrNT composite membrane exhibited low vanadium ion permeability (3.2 × 10−9 cm2 min−1) and superior ion selectivity (2.95 × 107 S min cm−3). The VRB constructed with a Nafion-ZrNT composite membrane has lower self-discharge rate maintaining an open-circuit voltage of 1.3 V for 330 h relative to a pristine Nafion membrane (29 h). The discharge capacity of Nafion-ZrNT membrane (987 mAh) was 3.5-times higher than Nafion-117 membrane (280 mAh) after 100 charge-discharge cycles. These superior properties resulted in higher coulombic and voltage efficiencies with Nafion-ZrNT membranes compared to VRB with Nafion-117 membrane at a 40 mA cm−2 current density.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The Nafion-ZrNT composite membrane was successfully fabricated. </LI> <LI> Nafion-ZrNT membrane shows low vanadium-ion crossover thus superior ion selectivity. </LI> <LI> VRB showed low self-discharge rate for Nafion-ZrNT composite membrane than Nafion-117. </LI> <LI> Nafion-ZrNT exhibits high discharge capacity and efficiency compared with Nafion-117. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Platform for Highly Sensitive Alkaline Phosphatase-Based Immunosensors Using 1-Naphthyl Phosphate and an Avidin-Modified Indium Tin Oxide Electrode

        Aziz, Md. Abdul,Jo, Kyungmin,Qaium, Md. Abdul,Huh, Chan-Hwa,Hong, In Seok,Yang, Haesik WILEY-VCH Verlag 2009 Electroanalysis Vol.21 No.19

<P>We report a versatile platform for highly sensitive alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-based electrochemical biosensors that uses an avidin-modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode as a sensing electrode and 1-naphthyl phosphate (NPP) as an ALP substrate. Almost no electrocatalytic activity of NPP and good electrocatalytic activity of 1-naphthol (ALP product) on the ITO electrodes allow a high signal-to-background ratio. The effective surface covering of avidin on the ITO electrodes allows very low levels of nonspecific binding of proteins to the sensing electrodes. The platform technology is used to detect mouse IgG with a detection limit of 1.0 pg/mL.</P>

Mitochondrial 10398A>G NADH-Dehydrogenase Subunit 3 of Complex I Is Frequently Altered in Intra-Axial Brain Tumors in Malaysia

2018 Brain Tumor Research and Treatment Vol.6 No.1

Background Mitochondria are major cellular sources of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation which can induce mitochondrial DNA damage and lead to carcinogenesis. The mitochondrial 10398A>G alteration in NADH-dehydrogenase subunit 3 (ND3) can severely impair complex I, a key component of ROS production in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Alteration in ND3 10398A>G has been reported to be linked with diverse neurodegenerative disorders and cancers. The aim of this study was to find out the association of mitochondrial ND3 10398A>G alteration in brain tumor of Malaysian patients. Methods Brain tumor tissues and corresponding blood specimens were obtained from 45 patients. The ND3 10398A>G alteration at target codon 114 was detected using the PCR-RFLP analysis and later was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Results Twenty-six (57.8%) patients showed ND3 10398A>G mutation in their tumor specimens, in which 26.9% of these mutations were heterozygous mutations. ND3 10398A>G mutation was not significantly correlated with age, gender, and histological tumor grade, however was found more frequently in intra-axial than in extra-axial tumors (62.5% vs. 46.2%, p< 0.01). Conclusion For the first time, we have been able to describe the occurrence of ND3 10398A >G mutations in a Malaysian brain tumor population. It can be concluded that mitochondrial ND3 10398A>G alteration is frequently present in brain tumors among Malaysian population and it shows an impact on the intra-axial tumors.

Effect of Thirty Days Supplementation of Standardized Lingzhi Extract on Aerobic, Anaerobic and Strength Parameters in Trained Athletes

( Abdul Rashid AZIZ ),( Patrick O. L. GOH ),( Kong Chuan TEH ) 한국스포츠과학원 2006 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.18 No.1

The mushroom fungus lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been used for centuries as a traditional health tonic in the Far East. One of its reputed effects, albeit still unproven, is the ability to improve human physical performance. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential ergogenic effects of thirty days of standardized lingzhi extract supplementation on exercise performance. The study adopted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled experimental design. Nineteen players from the men`s national field-hockey team were randomly divided into the experimental (LIN, n = 10) and control (CON, n = 9) groups. All players completed tests for percentage body fat, maximal oxygen uptake, 30 s anaerobic Wingate cycling, and hand-grip strength, at pre- and post-thirty days of supplementation. Throughout the 30 days, the LIN group consumed 440 mg lingzhi extract (dose equivalent to 1.5 g dry fruiting body) daily while the CON group was given an equivalent placebo. All players underwent a similar centralized training programme during the intervention period. There were no significant differences in the physical and performance parameters between the two groups, either at the pre-and post-supplementation stages. In conclusion, chronic daily supplementation days of 440 mg lingzhi extract for thirty-days did not enhance training related gains in the aerobic, anaerobic and strength parameters in well-trained field-hockey players.

Logistics Capability, Logistics Outsourcing and Firm Performance in Manufacturing Companies in Pakistan

AZIZ, Abdul,MEMON, Javed Ahmed,ALI, Shuaib Korea Distribution Science Association 2020 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.7 No.8

This study investigates the role of logistics capability and logistics outsourcing on the performance of manufacturing companies in Pakistan. It examines how logistics capability affects firm's performance, why outsourcing is essential and how firms benefited if they outsource the service rather than establishing their own logistics capability. This research is based on a survey using structured a questionnaire to collect the primary data. The target population is logistics specialists of manufacturing companies in Pakistan with head offices based on Karachi, that have their own logistics or outsource their logistics. The questionnaire has been distributed to 500 respondents in 113 manufacturing companies in Pakistan. Confirmatory factor analysis has been used as statistical techniques to check the factor loading of the components, and SEM (Structural Equation Model) is used to check the impact of logistics capability on firm's performance as well as the role of logistics outsourcing as a mediator. The findings of the research suggest logistics capability has positive impact on the performance of the manufacturing companies in Pakistan, and logistics capability has also an impact on logistics outsourcing. On the other hand, the study found that logistics outsourcing has no significant impact on the manufacturing companies in Pakistan.

Electrochemical Immunosensor Using the Modification of an Amine-functionalized Indium Tin Oxide Electrode with Carboxylated Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes

Aziz, Md.Abdul,Yang, Hae-Sik Korean Chemical Society 2007 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.28 No.7

We have developed an electrochemical immunosensor that combines the electrocatalytic property of carbon nanotube and the low background current of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. A partial monolayer of carboxylated single-walled carbon nanotube (CCNT) is covalently formed on an ITO electrode modified with amine-terminated phosphonic acid. Nonspecifically adsorbed avidin on the hydrophobic sidewalls of CCNT is used to immobilize biotinylated antibody and to reduce the nonspecific binding to CCNT. The biotinylated antimouse IgG bound on avidin and the antimouse IgG conjugated with alkaline phosphatase (ALP) sandwiches a target mouse IgG. ALP catalyzes the conversion of p-aminophenyl phosphate monohydrate into p-aminophenol, which is electrocatalytically oxidized to p-quinone imine on CCNT surface. Moderate electrocatalytic electrode obtained with the combination of CCNT and ITO allows low detection limit (0.1 ng/ mL).

      • Battery-Less Location Tracking for Internet of Things: Simultaneous Wireless Power Transfer and Positioning

        Aziz, Arif Abdul,Ginting, Lorenz,Setiawan, Dedi,Park, Je Hyeon,Tran, Nguyen Minh,Yeon, Gyu Yang,Kim, Dong In,Choi, Kae Won IEEE 2019 IEEE Internet of things journal Vol.6 No.5

<P>We propose a battery-less location tracking system that enables 3-D positioning of an Internet of Things (IoT) device powered by the radio frequency (RF) wireless power transfer (WPT). In the proposed system, a power beacon is equipped with a phased antenna array that has the dual purposes of high-efficiency WPT and phase-based accurate positioning. In order to enhance the efficiency of the RF WPT, we propose a beam focusing algorithm that dynamically controls the respective phases of antenna elements to place the focal point of the electro-magnetic (EM) wave onto the target IoT device. We also propose a phase-based positioning algorithm that requires only one multiantenna anchor point for determining the distance as well as the direction from the anchor point. We analyze the Cramer–Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the phase-based positioning with a single multiantenna anchor point, and show that the distance from the anchor point can be estimated as long as the IoT device lies within the radiative near-field region. We propose a joint location tracking and WPT algorithm that performs 3-D positioning and beam-focused WPT in a unified way. We have built a real-life testbed with a large-scale antenna array with 64 antenna elements for testing the proposed algorithm. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in a real environment.</P>

Common Mode Voltage Cancellation in a Buck-Type Active Front-End Rectifier Topology

Aziz, Mohd Junaidi Abdul,Klumpner, Christian,Clare, Jon The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2012 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.12 No.2

AC/AC power conversion is widely used to feed AC loads with a variable voltage and/or a variable frequency from a constant voltage constant frequency power grid or to connect critical loads to an unreliable power supply while delivering a very balanced and accurate sinusoidal voltage system of constant amplitude and frequency. The load specifications will clearly impose the requirements for the inverter stage of the power converter, while wider ranges of choices are available for the rectifier. This paper investigates the utilization of a buck-type current source rectifier as the active front-end stage of an AC/AC converter for applications that require an adjustable DC-link voltage as well as elimination of the low-frequency common mode voltage. The proposed solution is to utilize a combination of two or more zero current vectors in the Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique for Current Sources Rectifiers (CSR).
