With the increasing demand for less harmful exhaust emissions and better fuel economy, the conventional injectors in gasoline engines can be replaced by the air shrouded injectors(ASI) in order to provide more improved fuel combustion in engine operations. To determine the optimum ASI adaptor attached to the conventional injector nozzle, the key design factors such as droplet size, fuel and air inlet angles, and injection angles are investigated based on computer simulation.<br/> To clarify the characteristics of fuel atomization, numerical computations are carried out using the STAR-CD which is a powerful Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) tool. The performance of fuel atomization is identified by checking the Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) measured at the predetermined locations inside the ASI adaptor. To reduce the number of simulations required to evaluate the parametric effects on the fuel atomization, Taguchi methods are used.<br/> The objective of this study is to identify the significant parameters aforementioned that can be applied to the conventional injectors. The suggested design technique would be the promising tool to overcome the future emission regulation.<br/>

EGI system has severe problem that heavy HC emission is generated due to large fuel droplet and fuel film attachment. Therefore. for the purpose of reducing HC emission. various atomization techniques is being developed. The one among those techniques is air shrouded injector. which has better atomization ability and demand less power loss than other atomizers.<br/> In this study, using Malvern system and fuel film measurement device, the atomization and fuel film characteristics of an air shrouded injector was analyzed, and design factors to develop air shrouded injector was established.

A this experimental study is executed to analyze spray characteristics for air-shrouded injector with different shrouding air pressure. Since spray parameters are very important for the EGI Engine performanc, spray parameters including spray separation angle, targeting capability, penetration, SMD, and atomization characteristics are visualized and analyzed by digital image processing method.<br/> Considerable spray characteristics to design air-shroud injector and adaptor is derived from this experimentation and described in more detail in this thesis.<br/>
