Biofilm system is suitable for the pretreatment of water because biofilm can act as niches where slow-growing degraders can survive at low organic concentrations. In order to cope with stringent environmental standards, it became essential to improve the understanding of the phenomena governing biological degradation of organics. In this study, effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and temperature on the efficiency of submerged biofilm reactors were investigated. Removal efficiency total organic carbon (TOC), turbidity, and algae increased with the HRT. It is considered that over 1 hr HRT is needed to ensure the removal of higher than 30% TOC. In comparison to honey comb type media, fibrous media were more favorable to the attachment and growth of active microorganisms. The close relationship with chlorophyll-a concentration and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration make POC a surrogate parameter for estimating the removal efficiency of algae.
정수 처리 능력 향상을 위한 PILOT PLANT 의 축척결정에 관한 연구

To improve the efficiency on the system of treatment processes without numerous expenditures for expanding existing facilities or constructing new facilities, it is necessary to improve treatment efficiency of its unit process. To find out the ways to improve the treatment efficiency, an experimental study using pilot plant should be preceded. For proper application of the results from the pilot teat to the field-scale treatment plant, the dimensions of the pilot plant should be obtained with certain relationship between the pilot and the field-scale plants. Even though this relationship should be in complete similarity for theoretically perfect application, the complete similarity is not possible in most experimental applications. In this paper, the scale-down of the water treatment plant was obtained based on the fluid similarity and then the dimensions were properly adjusted considering the process objectives and water quality. Froude and Reynolds similarities were chosen as the major similarities of fluid similarity. Because two similarities can not perfectly be applied in raw water experiments, Froude similarity with the velocity obtained by Manning's roughness equation was selected as the final fluid similarity. Finally, the objectives of each process and water quality were considered to obtain a properly distorted scales: Geometric similarity having the detention time of the target treatment was adopted in the mixing and flocculation basins: The sedimentation basin having geometric similarity of 16.276 was distorted by settling test in the target sedimentation basin.
