This research shows mechanical hardening effects on the temper of a material and the corrosion properties of an Al-Mn alloy (3xxx series). Manganese is the major alloying element of 3xxx series alloys. These alloys are generally non-heat treatable. which are widely used as general-purpose alloys for moderate-strength applications requiring good workability. External stress of work hardening makes plastic strain, grain refinement and dislocation hardening. Increased dislocation density and tangled dislocations disturb a slip. These grain structural characteristics are one of the important factors to determine the corrosion lifetime of the material. The relationship of these corrosion properties on the work hardening has been investigated by performing SST(salt spray test), Potentiometer, ECT(eddy current test) and micro-Vickers hardness test.

Computed Tomography (CT) is a test method for acquiring internal information without removing or destroying object. With its non-destructive nature and ability to inspect complex shape, CT has turned out to be very effective tool for inspecting automotive parts. Engineering CT with focal spot 600~1000㎛ can detect internal defects of aluminum casting parts such as cylinder head or block, and their images can be used for recreating the shape and internal defect distribution using voxel data visualization software. This paper covers the general application of engineering CT in automobile research center and also explains the merits and limitations of CT.
