This study represents numerical study on the thermal and fluid flow characteristics of exhaust gas in a motorcycle muffler. The reference engine was used 124㏄ small displacement. Numerical analysis with computational fluid dynamics(CFD) was carried out to investigate the exhaust gas that flow into a motorcycle muffler. The STAR-CD S/W used to three dimensional steady state and transient CFD analysis in a muffler. The Navier-Stokes Equation is Solved with SAMPLE and PISO method in a gener cartesian coordinates system. Numerical result shows that baffle of chamber which is inflow of exhaust gas can serious problem having thermal stress cause by high temperature exhaust gas. And accumulation of pressure estimate inevitable. So, accumulation of pressure has to remove how make a hole or grooves in the baffle connect with different chamber.

This study represents the flow uniformity and pressure drop in catalytic converter. Present research model type is a monolithic catalytic converter. So, this type have been widely used for satisfaction the regulations of pollutant emissions in automobiles. The mean experimental parameter was engine speed and ceramics monolith in the catalytic converter. The exhaust pressure was measured with pressure sensor. The experimental test engine model was used the 124.1cc motorcycle engine. The phase of exhaust pressure with high speed was moved according to increasing engine speed comparing with exhaust pressure with low speed. Also, the distribution of exhaust pressure at the megaphone type is similar with distribution of without monolith at catalytic converter. Present research models was taken as a base model and megaphone type was used for advanced model. Normally, the base type shape is used in automotive exhaust system. But megaphone type is not used in automotive exhaust system. Therefore, Megaphone type is applied newly at motorcycle.

And than We got the information of static pressure it is used to structural analysis ant the first baffle plate using the commercial CAE code ANSYS workbench. Exhaust gas flow third chamber from frist chamber and running second chamber. A simulation result shows that each chamber of muffler temperature is about 460 K, 445 and 463K and pressure is about 22,000 Pa, 16,000 Pa and 10,000 Pa.

This research is represents the application of catalytic converter in motorcycle. Present research model type is monolithic catalytic converter and this type have been widely used for satisfy and the regulations of pollutant emissions in automobiles. This experimental test engine model was used the motorcycle engine. Present research models has base and megaphone type. Normally, the base type shape is used in automotive exhaust system. But megaphone type is not used in automotive exhaust system. Therefore, Megaphone type is applied newly at motorcycle. The Method process of noise experiment for motorcycle was adopted the regulation of KSR-1029. Finally, It was found from the experiment result that more low sound pressure level from using the catalyst monolith in muffler. The results of this experiment will change the direction of the entire study of motorcycle exhaust system.
