The purpose of this study was to explore the difficulties experienced in the process of reemployment of retired middle-aged men, to identify the process of reemployment, and to understand how the preparation of retirement and reemployment are linked. Eight middle-aged men aged 50-60 who succeeded in reemployment following an initial retirement were selected for this study based on the grounded theory method. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, and analyzed utilizing open coding, axial coding and selective coding. The core category derived ‘recovery of the role that was lost with retirement’. Reemployment of retired middle-aged men are divided into two categories. One type includes retired middle-aged men who have prepared for retirement in advance is ‘preparation, challenge, reemployment, and stability steps’. The second category of retired middle-aged men includes those who have not prepared for retirement in advance is ‘crisis, reflection, challenge, frustration, reemployment, and stability steps’. In this case, they repeated the process from reflection to frustration several times. The conclusions of this study are as follows: First, the anxiety, crisis and difficulties experienced in retirement and reemployment had significantly different results depending on how individuals prepared for retirement. Second, retirement preparation and reemployment are closely linked. Third, among workers in non-professional fields, career in sales field was competitive for reemployment. Fourth, In order to prepare for a systematic retirement, the support system of the company and the consideration of leader are important. Fifth, it is important for middle-aged workers to prepare for retirement.
