In this paper, we present a new surface defect detection system for pinch roll in hot strip mill. Because of various causes such as cooling water, surface noise, roll shape, installation location, etc., it is difficult to obtain roll surface image. Moreover, the similarities in the gray-level and shape of the defect and defect-free regions make it very difficult to accurately detect defects. In order to solve the problem, we propose an optial system based on white LED, color line scan camera and cooling water eliminator. Also, we developed a defect detection algorithm with Gabor filter and morphological operation to improve defect detection accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed system is shown by means of experimental conducted no images of pinch roll surfaces obtained from an actual steel production line in hot strip mill.
