Vol.84 No.2
Misu(眉叟) Heo Mok(許穆) was a scholar lived in Later Joseon Dynasty period who is well-known for his unique style of seal script(篆書) calligraphy. It owes his originality of academic and calligraphic achievements largely to his revivalism in “Guwen/gomun(古文)” that can mean both “ancient style of writing” and “ancient script”. Heo Mok sought ideal “guwen/gomun” that was described in his literary theory as “ideal style of writing in ancient ages” and that was described in his graphonomical theory as “ideal type of script in ancient ages”. In his view, “ancient style of writing” in the remote past has the foremost value, but depreciated styles of writing in the near past are not necessarily excluded; in a similar way, however foremost the “ancient script” of ancient sages in the remote past is, the modified scripts in the near past can be utilized as models of secondary importance. His “gomun” theory described above were demonstrated in his practice of calligraphy that revealed its details in his manuscript seal script dictionaries. These dictionaries are core texts to understand the aspect of his effort to restore “ancient scripts”. Especially in Heo Mok’s Rhyme Dictionary of Ancient Scripts(古文韻律) he was focusing on the Zhou script (Zhouwen 籒文) that he mentioned in his graphonomical theory as secondary important script, and in practice he mainly adopted the Zhou scripts in Shuwen Jiezi(說文解字), a.k.a. Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters.
