Matthew Arnold’s “Mycerinus”: Unraveling Adverse Occurrence, Resilient Force, and a Quest for Liberation

Vol.45 No.4

This article intends to examine how Matthew Arnold’s early poem “Mycerinus” features the protagonist’s confrontation with prophetic ordinance about the termination of his life within 6 years. It also unravels the main figure’s vibrant reactions to the distressing augury, which involve his vigorous inquisition to internal deliverance from the heavy burden of the incredible oracle. Through this literary work, the author prefigures a number of his later poems where he depicts the protagonists’ interior pilgrimages undertaking inevitable tribulation and determined responses, whereby they ennoble their spirit through unyielding resilience to adverse fortunes. The paper incorporates Arnold’s letters and prose works in which the writer explicates his conceptions of poetry and its substantial function during his time of chaos and difficulties.

Matthew Arnold’s “Resignation”: Manifestations of Predicament, Forbearance, and a Quest for Resilient Force

Vol.61 No.4

This article investigates how Matthew Arnold’s early poem “Resignation” investigates the speaker’s perceptions of the power of unanticipated adversity, irresistible undertaking, and a vigorous pursuit of human resolution. Reworking an ode form into his work, devoted to his sister suffering from her precipitous affliction, Arnold ponders over the problem of man’s adverse fortune, his graceful-mindedness to forbear such occurrences, and to simultaneously pursue an unswerving power inherent within his willpower. Among his initial poems, this poem is remarkable in foreshadowing one of the writer’s recurrent thematic concerns with the dilemma of human choice under the ineluctable force of its bizarre and repugnant counterpart. In reference to his various poems and prose works, “Resignation” certainly establishes the germ of the territory of one’s resilient and free choice, which leads to his later portrayal of Empedocles’s defiant spirit, whose characterization has been regarded as one of Arnold’s great literary distinctions. Arnold’s poetic purpose is not to reveal the characters’ resigned stance, but discover an Empedocles-like dynamic and vibrant spirit of man in response to the present predicament.

Byron's The Prisoner of Chillon: Perceptions of Distress and Stoic Forbearance

Vol.29 No.1

A number of Byron's poetical and dramatic works resonate the profound influence of his readings of Stoic philosophers on his literary imagination, particularly while portraying the main figure in The Prisoner of Chillon. The poet accentuates the indomitable spirit and endurance of the Prisoner in confronting the unavoidable circumstances of suffering imposed by his traumatic experiences of imprisonment and the continual deaths of his younger brothers in the same place. In spite of the close link between Byron's works and Stoic reverberations, both contemporary and modern critics have paid little attention to such a significant correlation between the two domains. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Byron embodies the stoic reaction of the protagonist to his distress and ordeals necessitated by the turbulent, tragic occurrences during his confinement. The article aims to show how the protagonist copes with the problems of suffering, death, and fate with stoic fortitude and willpower. Indeed, Byron deploys the resolute and forbearing attitudes of the Prisoner toward the adverse fortune and frustrations in The Prisoner of Chillon composed in 1816 ― allegedly a turning point in Byron's poetical world.

Matthew Arnold’s “Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse”: Instability of Religious Selfhood and Boundary of Action

Vol.61 No.4

This article examines how Matthew Arnold’s “Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse” derails the traditional form of elegy by portraying thematic concerns such as the crisis of religious identity and the difficulty to take an action for its solution. “Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse” focuses on the speaker’s pilgrimage to a seclusive residence of the monastery and conveys the writer’s considerations of the prevalent problem of his age. Whereas traditional elegies chiefly deal with the dead as their main subject, Arnoldian elegy accentuates the loss of both faith and sentiment of grief which, he believes, is necessary for recognizing the serious condition of the era itself. In addition, the author accentuates the protagonist’s struggle with solving matters like despair and a sense of ennui. The article unfurls the surrounding landscape of the monastery where the speaker articulates his internal bereavement and simultaneous recognition of its apparent irresolvable boundary.

Vol.34 No.3

Byron’s Harrow Poems: Manifestations of Remembrance, Perception, and Resilience

Vol.40 No.1

This article examines how Byron’s Harrow poems in the first public edition of Hours of Idleness (1807) and Poems Original and Translated (1808) feature the speaker’s internal experiences in which he recollects his past occurrences, perceives their significances, and adopts a resolute attitude toward ironic human enterprises. Byron deploys the image of Harrow, where he studied during his school days, as a metaphorical site which brings together three interlinked concepts of memory, contemplation, and spiritual reaction, thereby overcoming the protagonist’s distress caused by a sense of ubi sunt and the bounds of man’s desires. The Harrow works foreshadow themes which occur in Byron’s subsequent literary oeuvres ranging from the 1810s to Don Juan Canto XVI (1824) where the author maintains the dynamic mental process of speakers in association with their ambient locations.

Nature and Harold’s Pursuit of Stoical Forbearance in Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage Ⅲ

Vol.50 No.1

In Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage III, Byron’s portrait of Harold concentrates on showing how the character develops a stoical attitude toward suffering, as he comes to terms with the frustrations of life brought about by his self-exile, alienation, failed love, and loss of fame and honor. As Byron outlines this mental journey, Harold’s intense relationship with nature plays a crucial role in helping him to achieve his spiritual rebirth. Indeed, this relationship is made explicit in the poem, for Byron closely identifies Harold’s spiritual pilgrimage with his appreciation of the vivacity of nature. This paper, therefore, will examine how Harold’s mental and spiritual communion with nature contributes to his rediscovery of love and a sense of vigor in the midst of his present tribulations.

The Seafarer: A Spiritual Journey into Suffering and the Transience of Life

Vol.27 No.2

Many commentators have investigated The Wanderer, a well-known Old English elegy, but paid insufficient attention to another significant, evocative elegiac poem, The Seafarer, written during the same period of Anglo-Saxon England. What they primarily disregarded is the symbolic ramification of the speaker's sea voyage, which he undertakes during his exile. The purpose of this paper is to examine how The Seafarer features the diverse elements of an elegy, portraying the speaker's metaphorical, spiritual journey into his internal distress and dilemma, which he encounters as a mortal being. In addition, the article shows how the voyager attempts to solve the irresolvable problems of the transitory facets of human life. His awakening into a religious consolation constitutes one of the substantial parts of Old English poetry.

Byron’s Reworking of Ossian’s Fingal in The Death of Calmar and Orla

Vol.66 No.-

This article examines how Byron creatively adopts Ossian’s Fingal (1762) into his early work The Death of Calmar and Orla (1807), in terms of his persistent concern with human mortality, the main characters’ attitudes toward it, their recognition of undying friendship and fame, and finally the role of a bard to sing their imperishable spirit. Byron, who recreated so many precedent literary sources throughout his literary career, transfused into his work the recurring motif of the boundary of human life and man’s defiant reaction to the irreducible territory of one’s fatality. While searching for Byron’s adaptative deployment of Fingal, this paper investigates the author’s elaborate formation of structural rearrangement, intensive characterization, and manifold imagistic embodiment. Byron’s reshaping of Fingal foreshadows the underlying concept of the downfall of his subsequent works, where main figures show vibrant and consolidated reactions to the moment of their imminent death and the time of complete loss of their public fame.
